NIS2010 behaving odd

Weird things happening with NIS2010, a couple of times now I have logged into my computer and although there are 52 days left on my subscription it said my NIS2010 was not activated and I had to activate again. Another thing which has happened a few times as well is the definitions have not updated and I get a message to download the updates but when I go to update it goes to error 404. In simple terms Page Cannot Be Displayed. I cannot download definitions, when I try the Norton Update that fails for the first 4 then updates successfully.

Anybody else with the same problem or is this just a one off case. Just in case you ask... Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit.

Thanks

Hi Jonessie,

Did these problems start happening when you upgraded to NIS 2010? Did you upgrade using the over-install method?

Jonessie,

This sounds like an unclean installation. You will have to uninstall NIS 2010 and reinstall it again. Please proceed in the following manner if you do not have any other Norton products on your computer; you will have to use the removal tool in order to get the faulty install off your machine.

Note: the removal tool will wipe out your settings and any other Norton products installed on your computer. It will not touch your product key, however.

-download the removal tool from here and save it to your desktop:

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&ssfromlink=true&sprt_cid=1...

-download the full NIS 2010 installation package from here and save it to your desktop:

http://www.norton.com/nis10

-make sure you have got your product key handy (you can get it from your Norton account). The removal tool leaves the product key behind and NIS 2010 should pick it up automatically, but it's better to be on the safe side.

-deactivate any other security software you may have (e.g. Windows Defender; no need to deactivate NIS 2010)

-if you wish, you can create a system restore point

-disconnect physically from the internet (remove the internet cable) that way your computer is not exposed.

-if you're in Vista: right-click on the removal tool icon, run as administrator; run the removal tool 2-3 times (once is not enough), rebooting each time after every run

-after running the removal tool: if in Vista: right-click NIS 2010 icon, run as administrator, let it install itself. When it wants to connect with the web, connect again to the internet.

Please tell us how it goes. Thanks :-)

Re: NIS2010 behaving odd
Thank you for the solution, although I have a slight problem with this... my installation limit has passed and I cannot install from fresh because otherwise it will ask for my to buy a new licence. The reason I have gone to the limit of my installations is because of beta testing Windows 7 and uninstalling and reinstalling all the time has gone to the limit of your installation period.

I'm upgrading to Windows 7 on the 22nd of October and I have a new licence ready for NIS2010, unless you can increase my limit for me to try your solution?

You can uninstall and install your Norton product as many times as you wish on the SAME machine/same hard drive without losing your licence. Now, if you install your Norton product on ANOTHER computer, then you use up another licence. For this reason, if you want to "move" your Norton from an old computer to a new one, you have to uninstall Norton from your old computer, that way you can still keep your licence.

Have you got a multiple-user licence?  On how many computers have you installed NIS 2010 so far/are you planning to install NIS 2010?

You should be able to check the licence type you have got by going to your Norton account over here:

Re: NIS2010 behaving odd

Sorry for the delay I have been a little busy this morning... The remaining activations on my accoutn is none so if I uninstalled and then reinstalled again I would not be able to activate the software would I...?

Re: NIS2010 behaving odd

Hi Jonessie,

If you uninstall and install your NIS 2010 on the SAME computer, you can do so as many times as you wish. So you can uninstall NIS 2010 and reinstall it the way I told you to, since you are not going to install it on a new computer - in which case, you would have no licence anymore unless you removed NIS from your old computer.

You can go ahead.

I'll give it a go and let you know the results.

Worked a treat... actually things came up which did not come up when I first upgraded, I would imagine this was because it was a fresh installation and not upgrading. thank you the support most appreciated.

Resolved cand closed.
