Security News

Intel Security, Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, and Symantec under the Cyber Threat Alliance have probed the net scourge revealing that the attackers are thought to be a single entity. That theory's based on commonalities in the Bitcoin wallets they use to receive ransom payments.

 http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/10/30/crypowall_paper_cyber_threat_alliance/

Kaspersky Lab has added an additional 14,031 decryption keys to their free repository, enabling all those who have fallen victim to CoinVault and Bitcryptor ransomware to retrieve their encrypted data without having to pay a ransom to cybercriminals.

Sixty percent of child identity fraud victims personally know the fraudster using their data; the same can be said for only seven percent of adult fraud victims. Identity fraud against minors is hard to prevent because many perpetrators have legitimate access to the children's information. Two-thirds of child fraud victims are under the age of eight, 20% were between the ages of 8 and 12, and 14% were aged between 13 and 17.

bjm_: IBM warns of instant breaking of encryption by quantum computers: 'Move your data today'

    https://www.zdnet.com/article/ibm-warns-of-instant-breaking-of-encryption-by-quantum-computers-move-your-data-today/

Quantum computers will break asymmetric (also called public-key) algorithms based on integer factorization (like RSA) and the discrete logarithm (like Diffie-Hellman). In the case of symmetric algorithms, typically the key space size is reduced to its square root (using Grover's algorithm).

KDBX files are encrypted using symmetric algorithms only; no asymmetric ones are involved. When quantum computers arrive, the security of AES-256 will be reduced to the security of AES-128, which currently is considered to be secure though, i.e. AES-256 is quantum-resistant.

So, KDBX files should continue to be secure for quite a while, but developments in this area need to be followed of course.

I can recommend the following article:

    Alice,

With respect to the “Malware Protection Test” as examined by AV Comparatives, ESET did not fare as well.  Blocked only 99.8% of variants versus Symantec at 100%.  When looking at if a respective system was compromised, 0.2% WERE with ESET whereas none were compromised with Symantec.

    Hi Krusty,

I'm not sure if it is spamming as perhaps just presenting info about the ESET company as her previous post seemed to be talking about technological stuff.  I mean i don't mind discussing rival programs here, the problem is that ESET just didn't perform as strongly as some of the other companies.  I would even argue that Kaspersky did even better because they had a lower false-positive rate than Sym.

    Best,

Back in February, Google announced its plans to label all sites accessed over regular unencrypted HTTP as "not secure," starting in July. Today, the company described the next change it will make to its browser: in September, Google will stop marking HTTPS sites as secure.

    https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/05/as-the-web-moves-toward-https-by-default-chrome-will-remove-secure-indicator/

In February, Emily Schechter, the Chrome Security Product Manager at Google, announced in a blog post that beginning with the release of Chrome version 68, "Chrome will mark all HTTP sites as 'not secure'." This means that Chrome users will see a visible warning next to the Web address for sites using unencrypted HTTP to serve up pages—a warning that Google has been rolling out slowly over the past few months, starting with pages that have forms requesting information.
