Norton app advisor issue after latest update

Hello,
Since last norton mobile update I noticed issues with status showing until explore apps in google play.
Usually you can see "safe" status, but recentyl in some apps I can see "network not available".
These statuses can be checked for example in:
- group sharing (samsung),
- private share(samsung)
- samsung cloud,
- android system intelligence (google LLC)

...

What is common to these apps that is built in apps i think, but maybe I am wrong.

Yesterday was some update which turned off google play webadvisor... is it solution? Can you check and confirm if it is turned off?

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

Different issue. But Norton is aware of it and has a Support article here.    https://support.norton.com/sp/en/ca/home/current/solutions/v110239211

I found this issue and the article cleared it up for me.  Although the About was in a different location than in the article. As GP store app is opened, tap on your user icon to the right of the search bar, then tap on Settings > About. That is where you will see the Play Store version and the Update Play Store link.

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

Everything is according this article but app advisor stoped showing. Lets wait for nearest update...

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

I saw the same thing with the App Advisor not displaying at all. Did you try to force a check for a new version of the Google Play app? I did and it seemed to reset something that brought back the App Advisor indications.

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

I am running Android 12 and Norton 360 version 5.41.0.220729004  .  The last update is July 29, 2022 for Norton 360 and it is the latest version as far as I know.

I no longer see any info from Norton concerning apps in the Google Play Store. I did follow the link provided by peterweb and still have no banner indicators from Norton.

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

Same for me: App Adviser is enabled, all "good" on the Norton side, but MIA in Google Play, which is up to date.

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

@xjoex @MickMickle and @Bart86

Have you checked for updates to 360? The Google Play Store lists the latest update as ver  5.41.0.220729004.

Did you force a Google Play app update check?

Have you restarted your device.

Doing all this resolved the missing App Advisor feature for me.

If not, hang tight for some hotfix from Norton. As noted, they are aware of this issue.

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

@peterweb

I do have Norton 360 version 5.41.0.220729004

I did check for updates on Google Play store but I do not know what you mean by "force a Google Play app update check".

I did do a restart of my device but as of now the app advisor is not working as I see no banners telling me safe, no info available, etc.

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

@xjoex

I did check for updates on Google Play store but I do not know what you mean by "force a Google Play app update check".

From the link I gave above for the Norton Support article about this issue, there are instructions on how to update the Google Play Store app itself. From within the Play Store app, you have to go to Settings > About. You will see a link by the version number to update. Tapping on that will force a check for a new version. That seemed to resolve the issue for me.

Danksagungen0

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

Yes I did do that following the instructions in the link you provided but I think that the problem lies within Android 12 vs other OS configurations from what others here have reported.

I will continue to follow this and hope for a fix soon.

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

Latest versions of Google Play and Norton 360 were installed and I have restarted phone. No dice. Unfortunately, guidance for forcing Google Play update goes nowhere. (I was also wondering how to do that.) Even though the About screen has an update link, it's already up to date when clicked (see screenshot in uploaded pdf). This new issue of Norton App Advisor not showing scan of Google Play apps exists on my S22 Ultra (Android 12 w/above app versions). But it works normally on my Tab S5e (Android 11, Google Play 31.8.19-21 [O] [PR] 466385160 and Norton 360 5.40.0.220715002)

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

Latest version as of Monday morning 8/22/2022 solves the issue for me. My banners are back when I go to Google Play Store and click on an app for info. New version is 5.4.1.1.220815010

Thanks to Norton and all that participated in this thread to help with this problem.

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

Thanks @xjoex for reporting this update has fixed your issue. The good news is that it did no break my older Android 9.

@MickMickle  Can you update your 360 and test again?

Danksagungen0

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

Google Play didn't offer the update, but going through the long-press info icon ("i") for Norton 360, I found update available which did bring back the security status banner in Google Play.

However, it's not conclusive that the original issue of "Network Unavailable" banner has been fixed. These are test examples I used before (picked because of their similarity to ES File Explorer app removed some years ago from Google Play):

"No Info" is the same -

  • File Explorer - ES file manager (Jeusjoy)

"Network Unavailable" was the same but became "Safe" later when clicked -

  • File Manager: ES File Explorer (AMedia JSC)

"Network Unavailable" is now "Safe" -

  • ESX File Explorer: ES Files (Jeusjoy)

New examples: "No Info" -

  • ES File Manager File Explorer (Rainbow Web Files)
  • EX File Manager (Ace Mobile)

So, one example of "Network Unavailable" still popped up but I couldn't duplicate it later. (Maybe it was cached from an earlier time.) "No Info" MIGHT be an acceptable label: a red flag somewhere between "Safe" and "Unusual Behavior."

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

I just reviewed @Bart86 original post and at least two of those examples, group sharing (samsung) and android system intelligence (google LLC), still say "Network Unavailable."

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

Status banner is back, but "network unavailable" still appears...
Danksagungen0

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

All these apps still has "network unavailable" status...
Danksagungen0

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

When I click on a Samsung app thru my settings it takes me to the Galaxy Store and I get no banners from Norton as I assume it only checks apps in the Google Play Store.

When I click on an app like Private Compute Services it takes me to the Google Play Store with a Norton banner of "Network Unavailable" but Google also states "This item isn't available". So there is a connection there and maybe the Norton banner should read "No Info Available".

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

Thanks for the feedback. I have passed on that the 'Network not available' issue still exists.

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

App advisor is still not working for me. Norton is up to date, as is Google play. I also still see 'network unavailable' occasionally with some of my installed apps. Please help?

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

@Tiredguy

Thanks for adding your feedback. It has been reported to Norton that the issues still exist.

Are you saying the App Advisor is not working at all?

Danksagungen0

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

Another update and no solve for the problem. I think I will switch to another antivirus app. Waiting for bugfix from may - 3/4 months is not what norton should work like.
Danksagungen0

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

Looks like new update fixes the problem but the notify doesnt look exacly like other status bars. Text font color should be white, not black.
Danksagungen0

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

What text colour are you seeing? Is that on all App Advisor notifications? I just updated my 360 and still see the green bar with white text for apps I checked.

Danksagungen0

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

Scanning of apps which had "network unavailable" now has proper status bar text(no info) but that is black color on dark backround. So it looks different with all other apps which have "no info" status. Also there is lack of transition/animation.
Danksagungen0

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

I saw no black text on a dark background. I saw white text on green.

Are you seeing this colour scheme for all apps, or just the ones that used to say 'network unavailable'?

Try restarting your device and test. If that does not work, I would suggest uninstalling 360, restart your device and then reinstall 360, and test.

Danksagungen0

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

This is only with apps had "network unavailable". This the app has this status: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cdprojektred.gwentthro...
Danksagungen0

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

Perhaps the colors are different for various phone themes. When I get "No Info," it's black font on light grey (and animated), like in attached screen recording. This was the same Norton tag as one example in the PDF file I attached in an earlier post. To me, this residual issue isn't so much of a problem as the original "Network Unavailable" which made no sense when you know there's connectivity. (Although "No Info" for an app does raise questions.) Still, the Google App Advisor is just one of the security features Norton 360 has, and many features work well.

Danksagungen0

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

The No Info message just indicates that the app developer did not specify the added information that Norton looks for when they uploaded the app to the Play Store. Such as permissions requested by the app.

Good suggestion to look for the theme on the phone to see if that affects the colour on the Norton notification? But it may also be by design when there is no information, the background is grey. Have you tried other apps to see if the colour changes to the green?

Danksagungen0

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

I think the Norton labels are probably working as designed. It's just the relatively uncommon "No Info" apps that are grey. The "Safe" apps, which are most of them, are green. "Unusual Behavior" are orange. "Network Unavailable" are much more rare. I think the original issue is fixed. But the specific reason for the original problem and the specific changes that fixed it seem inexplicable. It could manifest itself again.

Danksagungen0

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

I think statuses with the same label text should be looking the same way. Ps: if i wouldnt use app advisor would i have been informed by norton about potential danger after app instalation? Does the gap after not using app advisor can be fullfill by other norton feature?
Danksagungen1 Stats

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

The different colours can let you know quickly whether you need to pay attention. Green, go for it. Orange, you should look more closely at the permissions requested. Grey, there is no information, so you really need to look closer at the app and the developer to decide if you trust them.

The App Advisor notifies you about possible issues with an app before you download and install it. If you turn off the app advisor, Norton's App Security under the Security section would flag the same issues that App Advisor would.

Danksagungen0

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

I havent been speaking about background colors of status bars. Until this issue was lasting there were bars with "network unavable" and "no info". Now previously marked as "network..." are labeled also as "no info" but has different font color (dark)...
Danksagungen0

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

Ok, let's talk font color if you like: On my devices, Norton 360 banner animation opens with white font on yellow, then usually changes to consistent black font on banner backgrounds of green, orange, or grey. The (now more rare) exception is white font for the "Network Unavailable." I think it's reasonable for the font to be white instead of black when the background is also black. Lots of "Network Unavailable" banners as reported in OP was a problem; now, not much of an issue for me.

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

I just had an odd experience with an app that had a "No Info" label. After installing, the label changed to "Safe." (The example app is SURFboard Central by Arris used to control cable modems.)

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

You can check in zip file 2 screenshots from apps with "network unavaible" before. They had dark font. All apps what didnt have "network..." before have white font color and animation/transition. You can also take a look into this game and tell my how norton banner look like: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cdprojektred.gwentthro...

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

@Bart86

Instructions to post screenshots can be found here
https://community.norton.com/forums/how-post-image-forums-0

Many helpers here will not open a .zip file for security reasons.

The changes to the colours of banners, fonts, etc could just be part of the new image/look Norton has been slowly spreading out to all web sites and product UI's.

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

This are samples with generally same status text but diff font color.

BTW: If you could just mention that to your contact... we could mark this issue as solved.

Re: Norton app advisor issue after latest update

Thanks for posting the "No Info" (equivalent) images. I see what you mean about the white font for Voice Access app. But the label background that you got was very dark grey, so white font makes a more readable contrast than the black on dark grey in the other example images you posted. When I see an app on Google Play that Norton has "No Info" for, the label or banner is black font on light grey.  Here is the game app you referenced and asked about in your post:

And here is the Voice Access app:

(Note that I use a dark theme in Android. But when I change to light theme, the Norton 360 banners are the same.)

Perhaps the reason for different Norton label colors involves language or region. I agree with you that font and background color should be consistent for the same label result.

More concerning to me is Norton 360 reporting "No Info" for apps that Google Play lists privacy features for. For example, look at the images here of Google's Voice Access with stated privacy details that Norton 360 can't determine.
