Newly added SATA 3TB HDD prompting USB scan out of hibernate.

Hi,

A week ago I plugged a 3TB HGST HDD into my PC using a USB attached Rosewill external enclosure. That was probably a mistake.

Only 746GB appeared, I formatted it anyway, GPT. After a bit of research I decided 3TB was beyond the capabilities of the Rosewill enclosure. It successfully Ejected using the Safely Eject system tray icon.

I placed it in the PC hooked up to a SATA port. Voila, all ~3TB are there. I deleted the 746GB partition & full formatted the entire drive. Copied terabyte plus onto it, everything looks good.

However, every time the PC wakes from Hibernate I get this pop-up.

  • Attention Required
  • Backup2 - 3 TB
  • Would you like to scan this USB drive for threats? Your scan time will change depending on the size of the drive.
  • You can change your scan preferences in your settings.

This is not a USB drive. It was for a few minutes before I stuck it the case. Does Norton think it is still a USB drive? I must have confused it.

Clicking yes does not stop it from prompting to scan again. Prompts only coming out of hibernate, not startup, not sleep mode. As if each time the PC comes out of Hibernate it thinks I have connected a new USB drive & prompts me to scan it.

I have another 3TB Barracuda, connected to the same controller (not RAID). Norton does not prompt to scan for that one. Of course, it has been in the machine since before Norton.

I could go to Norton 360 > My Account > Settings > Scans & Risks > USB Drive Scan & select Off, but that does not seem like the appropriate resolution.

Thank you

Re: Newly added SATA 3TB HDD prompting USB scan out of hibernate.

Hey, believe I got this brainworked.

Found error messages in the log for that 3TB HGST HDD. It was on the motherboard's secondary SATA controller = ASMedia 106x SATA Controller. I moved it to the AMD On-Chip SATA controller & the log messages disappeared.

Then returned Norton 360 USB Drive Scan to the "Ask Me" mode, et voila, is it no longer prompting for scan

I have not used that ASMedia controller in years, not sure why I wanted to put that new HDD on there. Disabled that ASMedia controller in BIOS, never using it again.

Hello. Disable "USB Drive Scan" in the settings below as well as "Network Drive Scan" and restart.

OK, I did it. This means it will no longer auto-scan any USB drives that I plug in, correct? I guess that's OK.

Thank you

I would disable Network Drive scan as well. That SHOULD take care of things. Unplug the device, wait a few seconds and reconnect it to test.
