LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

I've had Norton and Truecrypt together for about a week now and they worked together fine, they both stayed out of each others way.. Yesterday, that changed. No, it might of even started the day before yesterday. Allow me to start there since it might help find out the issue. So, on that day, I downloaded a file, Norton flagged it(WS.Reputation.1) and removed it, I disabled Norton and downloaded it again thinking Norton made a mistake, ran it on VirusTotal.com, and 7 anti-virus programs detected danger(most of them called it a Trojan).and the file stopped being read after  the 7th positive detection. So I deleted it, ran Norton immediately, downloaded and ran Malwarebytes and they both showed no Trogan on the computer. My computer started showing symptoms of a Trojan(slowing down, not being slow to load websites, etc) this was while Norton was doing a full system scan. After the scan came up clean, file thumbnails soon started going blank(they had a blank page icon) and some even vanished all together, like Recycle Bins. Even my Chrome browser stopped loading, it wouldn't even load the settings page. So, I panicked, restarted the system, logged back on and guess what? Norton was gone. It failed to start and wouldn't respond to my request to run. It was showing up on Task manager's list of programs running but not on the list of active programs. 8 or so minutes later, just as I am about to restart, Norton suddenly ran an autofix. Then I restarted.again and everything was back to normal.

Forward to a day later, I try and mount a PNP Truecrypt folder to view a few documents before I leave overseas, and just as I opened the mounted folder and started to scroll, I got a BSOD. The error said "PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR." I thought it was just a weird mistake, so I logged on, and tried again...same error. I then fitted with the settings and tried to get my files out of that Mount but everytime I even tried to move a file an inch, I got the BSOD. I couldn't open the folder after mounting because I'd get a BSOD. I got 8 of them before I gave up and ran a BSOD viewer. They all showed that the driver that caused it was either SRTSP64.SYS or BHDrvx64.sys and it originates in ntoskrnl.exe. The BSOD's also shared the same bug check code of 0x000000ca and parameter 1 of 00000000`00000002.

I elected to then uninstall Norton, and remove the files. It worked, I got no BSOD. So I assumed the issue was over and mounted them again then installed Norton back.

Forward to today, I move the Mount to an old external(formally internal) HDD I found. I encrypted some space on that HDD and attempted to add my files over there to the external drive so I could bring them with me overseas. The moment the files touched that HDD, BSOD! She came back. Same error, same driver, same location. What do I have to do to get Norton to get along with Truecrypt short of uninstalling Norton for a refund? I don't want to do that since I really like Norton but this is getting annoying and I don't want my brand new computer to be damaged by repeated BSOD's.

This desktop computer is only 1.5  weeks out the box, so it can't be the computer.

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

I have the same problem started 3 days ago.. With Norton Security 22.1.0.9 running on Win8.1, when I try to access a mounted truecrypt file, I instantly get a BSOD :-

<snip>

If I disable nortons anti-virus auto protect this doesn't happen and it works fine. I have also been able to restore to an earlier image where this doesn't happen. What seems to be the trigger for this issue is that liveupdates runs and in my case download 12 update and install them. On the next reboot with no other changes I run into this BSOD every time I access a mounted truecrypt archive. I can't figure out how to uninstall an norton update or get an more information other than the following updates where applied :-

Norton Web Protection Definitions
Engine,NS,INSTALLDIR
Norton virus definitions x64
Norton IPS Definitions
Extended File Attributes and Signatures
Norton Whitelist
MNI,NS,MUIDIR
MNI,NS,MUIDIR
SONAR updates
Norton Safe Web
Norton Reputation Revocation List

Is there a fix in the pipeline for this norton ? Any idea how to uninstall a select number a live upgrade updates?

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Hi people,
Sorry to be late.
You both seem to have Windows 8.x as common other than Norton product.
Hence I would like to bring to your notice that a feature called fast startup of windows 8.x has some issues with Norton that will make norton products not being properly working on the machines in most cases. I had tested the v7.1a and v7.2 of TC on windows 7 x64 two weeks before. It had no issues with tested encryption methods or files on NIS or NS (prior to update 22.1) at that time.
Hence I request you both to turn off fast startup feature and check.
After turning it off, run a few manual live updates and make sure TC is uptodate (v7.2)

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Same problem with 2 PCs at my location. I spent hours with online support to no avail. They remove NS, clean and reinstall the product and all is well until the DEC 11 PATCH is re-installed by live update. BOOM! problem back!  (On 2 PCs )  BSOD everytime I mount a TC volume. I have also noted that if you mount the volume as read only there is no BSOD.  Also tried veracrypt as a test and it crashes too!

I have used Norton and Truecrypt  side by side for years with no problems until Thursday Dec 11, 2014.  I think I have proven six ways from Sunday that the patch is the problem yet the arrogant escalation technician ripped apart my PC, turned off various services ( did not turn them back on ) changed permissions and drivers,  then told me it was not a Norton issue. Really!?!?.   I have removed NS and am looking for alternative.  At this point in time, NORTON SECURITY is the biggest piece of MALWARE I have encountered for a long long time.

I have registered a complaint against the patch at [removed email] but so far only an automatic acknowledgement.

My PCs are Win 8.1.   My other linux mint machine runs like a top and will continue to migrate away from this turmoil!!!!!!!!

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

I have managed to do a little work on this. "fast startup" was disable and after installing TCv7.1a and TC7.2 the problem still exists. I also installed VeraCrypt 1.0e and initial that seem to be ok, but start BSOD'ing again as soon as folder and files started to be copied into the virtual drive.

I have uninstalled norton's and install bitdefender and Kaspersky trial versions and in both cases the problem does *not* exist there and there is no BSOD.  So going back to norton it was stable until I installed 22.1.0.9. As soon as that happening BSOD every time I mount a TC archive as a drive.

This looks like a problem in nortons 22.1.0.9. I can't see how it can be possible anything else.

How do one normally raise a bug with symantec for this ? What is the process ? I only just reviewed my license 2 weeks ago so I would like to get it fixed.

Currently the best workaround I have is to click on the norton tray icon click "disable anti-virus auto protect" open the TC archive do whatever is needed and then enable anti-virus once the TC archive file has been closed.

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Try  [removed email]  as I did.   This is what was suggested by their online support when I asked them.

I provided as much detail as I could and specifically when and when not the BSOD happened.

I too am positive the patch is the root of the problem as I have seen my machines work properly, then apply patch , then they fail.

2 machines, 2 identical results.

For now, I have just removed NS and reverted to MS built in defenses.

Good Luck

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

I can confirm I have exactly the same problem.

I use Truecrypt and the instant any program tries to read from the virtual drive (via Windows Explorer, for example) I get the BSOD, with the PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR message.

If I disable Norton every works OK. The moment I enable the program again, the message appears. It is completely reproducible.

I have Norton 22.1.0.9 and Windows 8.1 64 bits.

The dump file generated by Windows points to a problem with  SRTSP64.SYS, error: PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR, bug check code: 0x000000ca, crash address:  ntoskrnl.exe+150aa0, caused by address: SRTSP64.SYS+db2d0

But I did make contact with Norton consumer service via chat and they tried removing Prefetch files and did some other stuff and that only made my issue worse. THIS next bit of info might help figure out the cause:
I do NOT get a BSOD if I mount a volume in READ ONLY mode. I can open, move files(out of the volume, nothing in) and so on and not get a BSOD only if I set it in READ ONLY mode. Does that tell you or anybody anything in particular?

The user had trouble in posting directly.

Since its appearing after the v22.1.0.9 update(after the update, I have not tried TC [my fav is diskcryptor which is not having the issue]. Before the NS update my experience with TC(both ver) was before a system image restore). Therefore, its worth if someone can help the SYMC employee with your logs on this issue.

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Hopefully I can post now....

So, as the post I sent to Nikhil confirms, I was able to mount the truecrypt once I mount it in READ ONLY mode...which is pointless since I want to add files and always get a BSOD when I remove READ ONLY to do that. I have some of the BSOD logs if it'll help. I don't have them all because I used CCleaner to see if clearing stuff out helped...it didn't.

I do have the last release of Truecrypt(7.1a?) and the most recent release of Norton Security. Other than putting the mounted Truecrypt file in READ ONLY, the only real way I can use Truecrupt is  by uninstalling Norton then re-installing it when I finish. Norton and Truecrypt got along on my computer for a week before this happened and one day after Norton randomly stopped booting during restart and  and Autofixed itself.

I tried adding special exclusions in Norton's settings so the driver I use is ignored and it didn't help me at all. Norton is dead set on making my life difficult with Truecrypt. I am going to try uninstalling both Norton and Truecrypt and formatting the driver if Norton gives up trying to help and see if things improve. If not? I think I'll either just keep uninstalling when I want to use Truecrypt or jump ship to another anti-virus program.

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Ok, I've posted the dumps in a TXT file.

I have never used any other security software with Norton other than Truecrypt. At least, not for long. I did have Malwarebytes and Norton together for a short time but I removed it. Mcafee was preinstalled on the computer, but I uninstalled it only minutes after I got this computer. Of course, I uninstalled it from the Control Panel, not the Mcafee uninstalling software, but I doubt that played a role since this issue started a week later.

I tried disabling autoprotect and everything else in Norton, it made no impact. I some how disabled it's ability to boot up on restart a few days ago from Safe Mode, and I was able to work Truecrypt. It is only when Norton is running at all and the Truecrypt volume isn't in "read only" when the crap hits the fan.

I am having exactly the same problem. No BSOD if mount in read only mode. Disable Norton all together will solve the problem, but ........ This situation happens just recently. I have been using TrueCrypt and Norton anti-virus for many years. Now, the situation gets very frustrated. I hope Norton acknowledges this problem and is actively working on it.

You have to remove McAfee using their removal tool and then install a clean copy of your Norton product. Also, please make sure you have the latest Microsoft windows updates. There were several updates which came out after windows update day. Run live update also to make sure you have all updates. Thanks.

Stop suggesitng useless uneducated hints and provide real solution. Clean install and such is so rudimentary it's not even worth considering it.

I even did fresh install and same problems. A machine with outdated virus def has no issues using same software.

NS 22.1.0.9  everything patched up to date. Do not question me on basic stuff I know more than you do. It's clearly norton breaking this starting this week.

removed Norton 2015 and re-installed N.I.S 2014 and no blue screens for 2 day's now.

I make an image of the drive before the update and It crashes every time after the update.

The latest update is broken. sticking with 2014 for now

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Glad a fix is in the works.  Here was my post under a separate thread:

Norton Security is crashing Cryptainer (http://www.cypherix.com/ (link is external)).. then it crashes the whole computer.  I have to hold down the power button until it shuts off.  This is the message I received from Cypherix tech support:

"After analyzing the issue, it has been discovered by our developers that
the problem has been caused by Norton's driver file SRTSP64.sys. This
driver does not support PNP disk. We are extremely sorry but there is
nothing we can do since the issue is not related with Cypherix program.

We would be extremely grateful, if you were to report this to Norton Tech
Support. Once gain please do accept my apologies and thank you for your
patience."

I've tried adding the program to the allowed Firewall Program Control, but it says "Error occurred while adding your program".

With all the problems I'm having it looks like I might end up switching all our systems to BitDefender.  Getting frustrated with Norton.

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Hi all. I'm very glad to read here about this problems then since a few time I'm facing the same BSOD issues, while before I worked with Truecrypt without any issue. I first thought having corrupt Truecrypt Volumes because on my Win8.1 Notebook I have the same issue, but when opening Truecrypt Volumes on an old XP PC (without NIS) everything worked fine; fortunately I kept this old XP PC being able then to extract needed documents and reinsert them. Also as I've stored my TrueCrypt Volumes on a NAS, I had to restart the NAS everytime running in a BSOD because the Truecrypt Volume was blocked and reported to be in use by another system. Now knowing the issue I'm able to get the needed documents using the XP PC or by disabling NIS for a short time. Thanks to all having contributed to find the issue. Now that the bug is known and even acknowledged by Norton I expect a fast update.

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

@ remix007,

The bug is detected to be affecting windows 8.1 and Norton Security v 22.1.0.9 as well as encryption tools like truecrypt.
Please verify that you have that config and Not NIS .
NIS is not buggy in this issue.
Also logs/dumps are requested (since yours come with network, attach information as per previous replies)

Lets hope Norton / Symantec issues patch soon after holidays.

Do get responses, but as you say, it (the fix) 'may' appear in the Product Update topic. Might even be posted in this topic, but no guarantee. Problem is the 'damage' done to open files when the BSOD happens. Leaves only 2 choices, disable Norton when using Office or not use Office. Not knowing when it was fixed (updates to NS happen without warning usually) doesn't help understand when there is no longer a need to worry about using Office.

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

I should also be on this list with BSOD, when using Steganos Safe, located on my USB drive (it creates virtual drive to work on). I have Win 8.1 and have NSwB ver 22.1.0.9. This problems started with 22.1.0.9 patch.

Windows 10 Pro, 64 bit.

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Add me to the list of disgruntled Norton security 22.1.0.9 users, if i open truecrypt 7.2, i get BSOD every time, instantly. Uggggh. Need fix from Symantec !!!

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

While we wait to see if Norton does in fact have a fix coming, I have an extra question:

If I was to fully encrypt my HDD(the one with Norton on it), would I be unable to use the HDD at all? Would Norton pretty much make it impossible for me to use the HDD?
