Crypto Miner removal

Hi,

I suspect my laptop is infected with a crypto miner as it is very slow and sometimes programs stop responding.

Can Internet security remove these things? or do i need specialised software?

Re: Crypto Miner removal

See this Norton blog article on JSCoinminer. As noted in that article, start by doing a full system scan with your Norton product.

Also as noted there, the code is being executed from within a web page you are visiting. The code will run as long as you have that page opened in your browser. To test, close your browser to see if your system performance returns to normal.

If this is what you are seeing, the JavaScript being run is often found in malicious ads on the page you are visiting. You can help stop this kind of issue by installing an ad blocker extension in your browser.

Re: Crypto Miner removal

spacedman Download the FREE version of Malwarebytes and allow it to attempt removal.

Cheers

Re: Crypto Miner removal

Thanks guys,

I'm running a full system scan, started it at 9pm last night and it's still running now, 6am.

I already have malware bytes but didn't think of running it.....DUH!

So far norton has found nothing exept tracking cookies.

What made me think it may have been infected was watching the BBC Click program, it said that criminals are hijacking computers to use them to mine for bit coin.

Re: Crypto Miner removal

There are many things that can slow down a system. Hardware and software based.

Let us know when your scans have completed.

Re: Crypto Miner removal

It seems a lot better.

After norton had finished i ran malware bytes, it found nothing.

I have noticed that incredimail runs very slow, so i suspect that may be contributing to the slow down.

Re: Crypto Miner removal

Do you restart your laptop every few days, or just allow it to sleep/hybernate? A Windows system can slow down over time as junk accumulates.
