NBRT FILE FAILS TO START WHEN BOOTING FROM USB DRIVE

There are several comments/questions on the community concerning my issue but I can't find an answer to these questions concerning the error received when a pc is booted using USB with NBRT.

Here is my situation:

I am using a hp all-in-one, 23-q140t, W10, updated to latest ver.

When booting from the USB device, an error "Unable to continue - X Error - Error occurred while accessing target disk drive partitions", is received and booting is stopped from advancing.

I have learned how to change the boot sequence from UEFI to Legacy and then to USB boot.

I have learned how to use the USB bootable to start the pc and enter the BIOS to select the USB to boot.

The NBRT starts, the big N circle appears, the countdown begins and appears to progress.

I get to the point of Selecting Language and then agreeing to the license agreement by clicking OK at bottom right of screen.

The error message then appears.  I click on the OK and the computer goes into a normal boot and the pc appears to be normal and functional.

If at all possible, if a moderator/forum Gurus/contributor would provide that this is NOT fixable, I can move on and go to another program/software.  We all pay Norton good money and if their tools won't work with their software, to recover our PCs, then it would be good to know now before it is truly needed and our PCs are turned to dead monitors.

Questions?  What is causing the Error, and what is the fix to allow NBRT to load and perform its' intended function?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Re: NBRT FILE FAILS TO START WHEN BOOTING FROM USB DRIVE

My simplest answer is, "image" the entire drive contents with Macrium Reflect. Those images can be "mounted" on the drive you have the backup on via file explorer, without the need to reinstall the entire backup, you can pull the files you need. And of course you can reimage the hard drive in the case of a catastrophe. It is of course simple to use.

Staying with Norton for protection is indeed a great choice on your part as well.

Re: NBRT FILE FAILS TO START WHEN BOOTING FROM USB DRIVE

Yes, SoulAsylum, I have several times.  I made a couple of mistakes in the first couple of times, as a true rookie of computernomics would, but kept on trying.  It is true that doing something over and over but expecting different results is insanity.  So, I stopped and asked for help - I appreciate your reply and hope that you can help more.

Please, what is wrong and can I provide any further information of my PC for you to help more???

I do believe the NBRT file is corrupt.  The problem occurs when the NBRT file loads and begins by asking the language and then after I agree to the terms.  The screen then changes and a "window" with some type of object rotating saying something about "mounting" and then the big ERROR box shows up.

Your help is appreciated - yes, I'm begging for help!  :)

Re: NBRT FILE FAILS TO START WHEN BOOTING FROM USB DRIVE

Download the NBRT Tool again and create the bootable USB using Rufus. Lets see if that make any difference.

Re: NBRT FILE FAILS TO START WHEN BOOTING FROM USB DRIVE

I have done that also.  I went to the "official" Rufus website, https://rufus.ie, downloaded the latest version.  Went to Norton webpage and downloaded the NBRT file again.  I printed out the "instructions" from the Rufus site and tried my best to ensure I filled out the page/card for creating the boot drive using the NBRT file I downloaded from the norton site..

I also went into my pc bios and disabled the UEFI boot, selected Legacy then selected the Legacy boot on the USB drive (x).

When I verified, as best as I could, the entries on the Rufus page, I clicked on START.

The NBRT file starts, the big N circle appears, the countdown begins and appears to progress.

I get to the point of Selecting Language and then agreeing to the license agreement by clicking OK at bottom right of screen.

The error message then appears.  I click on the OK and the computer goes into a normal boot and the pc appears to be normal and functional.

I am at the point of giving up.  I appreciate your comments.  If you can think of anything else, is there anyone at Norton that might be a resident expert on booting/working with the NBRT file?

I should ask - What will cause the NBRT file to not mount and run? Thanks again.

Re: NBRT FILE FAILS TO START WHEN BOOTING FROM USB DRIVE

Do you by chance still have any of the originally offered antivirus software installed? Is secure boot disabled in your BIOS? When you created the USB did you do so in FAT32 format vice NTFS?

Re: NBRT FILE FAILS TO START WHEN BOOTING FROM USB DRIVE

USB formatted in FAT32.  Secure boot is/was disabled - did that when I disabled UEFI boot, made Legacy boot.  After the repeated failures, I have restored to UEFI and secure boot.

No, I don't have any of the original Norton disc/software.

I have deleted Norton software, reformatted my backup disk drive and am moving to setup Windows Defender as my protection.  Will download Macrium to be my backup software.

Still open to suggestions.

Re: NBRT FILE FAILS TO START WHEN BOOTING FROM USB DRIVE

I should have asked in the first post what the reason is for using the NBRT tool. Infection suspected or known? You're saying the computer boots normally when UEFI and secure boot are set and a reboot has occurred.

The other question was, do you have ANY OTHER antiviral software or utilities that were installed on the drive trying to be scanned?

When you said you get the error "Unable to continue - X Error - Error occurred while accessing target disk drive partitions", is there a code where X Error is in the notification? If so what is the error code?

Re: NBRT FILE FAILS TO START WHEN BOOTING FROM USB DRIVE

Thanks for continuing and helping.

There is no known or suspected infection - I have been lax in my readiness of recovery efforts should I ever get a reason to need to use a recovery plan.  I did not have a USB boot tool/drive or a way to recover should there be an infection and I needed to start up with a bootable alternate USB/DVD/CD.  I was attempting to establish a tool for use to use for recovery should the necessity come.  :)  Yes, I have brought all this confusion on myself!  :(

"You're saying the computer boots normally when UEFI and secure boot are set and a reboot has occurred."  Not sure how to answer your question/statement - as the "a reboot has occurred." not sure what you are saying there. - I am saying - I have restored the BIOS settings back to original as before I started trying to boot via USB with the Rufus/NBRT file and the pc is booting normally as before I started all this.

I had no other third party software on the pc during this exercise - Norton has been used by me for several years for backup and daily virus scans.  As part of Windows, Defender is installed but was never activated before or during this excercise.

There were no codes in the dialog box.  Just the message "Unable to continue - X Error - Error occurred while accessing target disk drive partitions"

The dialog box had a red banner across the top which contained the "X" with the message in the lower part of the window with the message "Error....."

Tried to answer your previous post questions above.  I'm thinking this issue with me is likely an issue with my pc and my lack of knowledge/skill/training in PCs.  I went to the Rufus website and obtained a document something like a user guide and tried to make sure I filled out my Rufus "card" correctly.  I did this several times.  I suffered through several attempts to boot the PC and finally had success with that after I figured out how to change the BIOS from Secured Boot and UEFI to Unsecured Boot and Legacy boot.  I also note that Rufus indicates it will utilize UEFI or Legacy to boot.

Maybe Norton could issue a user guide addition or even a YouTube video for demonstration of using the Rufus/NBRT file which would make more clear how to create and use Rufus and then demonstrate the proper response of Rufus as it boots and then loads the NBRT file.

I know this is a lot but you seem to have a great attitude about this issue with me - I decided a long time ago - when I have an issue with something - there are many more like me out there in the "ethernet" beating their heads against the wall also.

Thanks again - appreciate your help.  Anything else about this event you need to know, please let me know.  I haven't cancelled my Norton subscription yet so I am interested in learning/knowing.

Re: NBRT FILE FAILS TO START WHEN BOOTING FROM USB DRIVE

You are most welcome as always. When I said: You're saying the computer boots normally when UEFI and secure boot are set and a reboot has occurred."  Not sure how to answer your question/statement - as the "a reboot has occurred. I was referring to the computer booting normal again, at the same time, was also asking if there were previous indications of infection that were prompting you to do a recovery. I understand now that you are making preparations for when/if the need should arise.

This is what the previous article says for using the USB, did you select "basic video" in step #4? :

Run a scan using Norton Bootable Recovery Tool

  1. Insert the recovery media (Norton Bootable Recovery Tool DVD or USB device) and then turn on or restart your computer.

  2. Enter the BIOS mode by pressing the key that appears on the screen immediately after your computer restarts.

  3. Select the DVD or the USB drive on which you created Norton Bootable Recovery Tool, and then press Enter.

If you use a UEFI-enabled computer, select the recovery media under the Legacy Boot option instead of the UEFI Boot option. The recovery media is the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool DVD or USB drive.

  4. The Norton Bootable Recovery Tool starts automatically after the countdown.

If the boot menu appears, in the Welcome to NBRT page, select Boot.

If the boot fails, select Boot (Basic Video).

  5. In the Select Language drop-down list, select your preferred language, and click OK.

  6. Read the license agreement, and then click Agree.

  7. Click Start Scan.

  8. In the Scan Completed window, review the scan results.

By default, all detected threats have a selected remediation action. You can also select the appropriate action for each of the threats.

Review the scan results carefully before resolving the threats, because the files that are removed cannot be restored.

  9. Click Fix.

  10. In the Confirmation window, click OK.

  11. In the Remediation window, click Continue.

  12. Click Reboot.

Re: NBRT FILE FAILS TO START WHEN BOOTING FROM USB DRIVE

This reply has gotten confusing as I have tried to answer your comments above.  Where I answer, I start with "Me -"

Me - In your comment above, a copy of the NBRT boot instructions, Steps 1, 2, 3 were successful, selecting the USB stick to boot, Legacy.  Step 4 began but then stopped as I have discussed.

Me - My comments below follow bold underlined italics for 1. and 3. Agree.   I never saw your below steps 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9. As I provide information to these steps, I am going back to my original comments at the beginning of this series of comments.  I ran Rufus/NBRT several times attempting to get a clear sequence and understanding of how this went.  I go back to wondering what would keep the NBRT file from mounting and booting.  Is there a Norton tech that would be familiar with the file that might be persuaded to get involved?  I don't know anything about how Norton handles problems like this and how concerned it might be for just one of their customers.  At this point we are just rehashing what happened - I realize in looking for a root cause of a problem, a thorough talk through and discussion of the problem is part of learning what happened.

Me - A new Question:  Could the usb stick I used be a cause of the file not loading/starting/continuing. (It clearly tried to start by giving the Language and Terms selections.)  It is a Kingston DTSER9 G2, USB 3.0, 128 GB.

  1. The Norton Bootable Recovery Tool starts automatically after the countdown.  Me - After the countdown ended, NBRT attempted to start and but went straight to selecting language, then the Terms agreement - upon which, when I checked agreement, for just a moment, there appeared another "box" with the swirling "something" (it was only present for a brief moment) and the error box appeared, like a windows dialog box, on top of the swirling "something" and everything stopped.

If the boot menu appears, in the Welcome to NBRT page, select Boot.  Me - Never saw a Welcome to NBRT message and a choice selection to select Boot never came.

If the boot fails, select Boot (Basic Video).  Me - I don't remember seeing any ability to choose "Boot" or anything "Basic Video"

  2. In the Select Language drop-down list, select your preferred language, and click OK.

  3. Read the license agreement, and then click Agree.  Me - After clicking on Agree, there was a momentary graphic, with a swirling "something" and then the error box appeared and everything stopped.

  4. Click Start Scan.

  5. In the Scan Completed window, review the scan results.

By default, all detected threats have a selected remediation action. You can also select the appropriate action for each of the threats.

Review the scan results carefully before resolving the threats, because the files that are removed cannot be restored.

  6. Click Fix.

  7. In the Confirmation window, click OK.

  8. In the Remediation window, click Continue.

  9. Click Reboot.

Me - Let's allow this to simmer a while.  I think from here, without a reasonable solution coming, we would just be rehashing the problem.

Again, I appreciate your continued interest in this and hope we can come to some solution.  Right now, I am focused on getting Windows Defender antivirus up and running then getting a backup in place - then a recovery solution.  I think Norton allows a subscriber to re-download software so if we can come up with a potential solution, I can reload, setup Rufus/NBRT and a usb stick - with a video from my phone as it happens.  Should have done that but it didn't occur to me - to wound up in the problem to think.

I welcome any ideas on the NBRT file.  Thanks again,

Joe

Hello SoulAsylum,

Checking with you to see if there was any success in getting someone to look at the issue we discussed on the NRBT file.

I would also like to ask you another question concerning Norton?

Let me know via reply is you are game for a "how do I" question using Norton to backup and recover my PC.

Thanks,

Re: NBRT FILE FAILS TO START WHEN BOOTING FROM USB DRIVE

Okay, thanks for "taking my call".

Background - I had Acronis Backup software for a long time before going to Norton.  It seemed difficult, complex and above my head.  the USB boot was difficult to manage for me and I had difficulty in rearranging my bootup to utilize the USB drive recovery process.  I was thankful that I never had an actual reason to need to use the USB to actually recover my pc/files.  I finally decided to quit the Acronis backup and go with Norton for file backup and Utilities to keep the pc cleaned up.  And now, with the NBRT question/difficulty, in Norton - I am at witts end with backup/recovery of my pc. I have setup Windows Defender and added Macrium Reflect Free for backup and recovery.  I recently read information on the internet that Windows Defender does not do as well as Norton in sniffing out the bugs and keeping the pc clean up - put in my mind that leaving Norton was not a good decision.  I believe Norton is most likely as good as it gets with virus' and malware etc...  But,

The question at last - How do I set up Norton to backup (I think I know the backup part) and to set up a boot CD to recover a computer.  I am still using Windows 10 as my pc doesn't qualify for the upgrade to W11.  The answer may be as simple as pointing me to a Norton doc or other question/comment here.

Thanks for your time with this.

Ok, that is simple enough.  On Norton, I've been very uncomfortable for the last few days without it on my pc and in service.

Let's call this "problem" as complete and solved.

Appreciate your help and quick responses.
