Constant pop-ups since trojan quarantined

Norton has been working fine for the last 5 years.

But now I get constant notifications stating "Your scans are complete, threats have been found and fixed, No further action required" after trojan (of no-name btw) was quarantined. Keeps on re-appearing after each re-boot or wake from sleep mode. On Windows 7 Service pack 2.

Norton support said there is no virus on PC, but that Norton is not working properly on WIN 7.  Their advice: Upgrade to WIN 10 or 11.

Norton Website states "Maintenance mode" for WIN7 Service pack 1 or less (but nothing about Service pack 2).

Numerous emails (Adware) about promoting new Norton features, but nothing to say 'beware WIN7 has limited support" which would have been really important to know.

Might be time to switch to the competition & upgrade OS.

I have noticed the same on Win 10. I have reported this to my Norton contacts so that it gets escalated to the developers.

 Hi Guru93:

There is no Service Pack 2 for Windows 7 - see the 03-Jan-2023 Lifewire article Latest Windows Service Packs and Updates.  Please go to Control Panel | System & Security | System and look in the Windows Edition section to find you current Service Pack.

What is the product name and version number of your Norton product (e.g., Norton 360 v22.22.11.12)?  As far as I know, the latest Norton v22.22.x products are still fully supported on Windows 7 Service Pack 1 as long as your OS is patched to end of support (14-Jan-2020) and Windows Update has installed KB4474419 (rel. 23-Sep-2019) that adds SHA-2 code-signing support to Win 7 SP1.  See Norton employee Gayathri R's 16-Apr-2021 announcement SHA 2 Code Signing Support for Windows 7  as well as the release notes <here> for the current Norton v22.22.11.12 that say "Norton 22.22.11 supports: Windows 7 SP1 with SHA2, Windows 8, 8.1, Windows 10 and Windows 11 ".  If you aren't sure if KB4474419 is installed see my comments in anotherws' Dec 2021 thread Windows 7 Install Failure.

If you were referring to Gayathir_R's 08-Mar-2021 Maintenance Mode for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 SP0 for Norton Security Software please note that Windows 7 SP0 refers to Windows 7 with no service pack.  Windows 7 users who have not installed Service Pack 1 installed must use legacy Norton v22.15.x products like the current legacy Norton v22.15.5.40 (rel. 24-Sep-2020) described <here>.

According to peterweb's post <above> your constant notifications about a quarantined trojan are likely due to a glitch in a recent Norton malware definition update, but if you haven't already done so you might want to run a second-opinion scan with Malwarebytes Free to see if it can detect any PUPs (potentially unwanted programs like adware, browser toolbars, etc.) or malware that might have been missed by your Norton antivirus.  I usually recommend that Malwarebytes Free users deactivate the 14-trial trial of the Premium (real-time protection) features after installation at Settings (gear icon) | Account | Deactivate (see Deactivate Premium Trial in Malwarebytes for Windows) and just use Malwarebytes Free as a second-opinion on-demand scanner. I also have Malwarebytes configured to warn me before it removes any PUPs or PUMs at Settings (gear icon) | Security | Potentially Unwanted Items so I have a chance to review any lower-risk threats like browser toolbars, etc. detected by Malwarebytes that I might actually want to keep.

The only caveat is that current Malwarebytes v4.5.x products also require that Win 7 SP1 users have KB4474419 installed since newer versions of Malwarebytes also requires SHA-2 support.

Imacri, thanks for the comprehensive reply.

My bad - indeed I have WIN7 SP1, with the latest Norton 22.22.11.12 and I have KB4474419 installed.

I'll be checking out Malwarebytes Free.

Re: Constant pop-ups since trojan quarantined

I have been using Norton products since 2005. I saw many backloops and worst behaviours in Norton. It's time to quit Norton & moveto real good AV product.  Norton LifeLock advertised it as a great security software but the reality is NOT. One of the worst antivirus software. Especially check these 3 key aspects,

1.   It doesn't accurately detect wide range of Viruses. Most of them are detected by Machine Learning. (e.g. Heur.AdvML.*  and Trojan.Gen.MBT) Many non-virus files are detected by this and this is too much annoying to us. Every time I report those samples for False Positive to Symantec/ Norton (Who knows whats the relationship between Broadcom symantec & NortonLifeLock even after the sold, Even Symantec creates all it's core engine and regular updates for Norton. NortonLifeLock is just a cover up only. Even not a virus is suspicious, This company is suspicious.) Actually, I reported more than 500 samples. Hey Norton listen, We purchased your (Norton) products to protect our PC, not to submit virus files and report false detections to you every time to improve your company. What are you thinking man?

2.  Some of the malware not removed by your worst product, For removal I don't reach your helpdesk, I can manually remove or Kaspersky is best to detect all malwares accurately and remove. Even If i contact, you guys are saying that I must have auto renewal plan to get your support for free. Hey are you joking? What the worst behaviour? Shame on you!

3.  Few times alert notifications are not working properly. Some Very big notices like your WiFi is not safe, use our VPN (as an advertisement). It takes 1/8 part of the computer screen. Don't you even know how to build a good user experience. Is this the way you're developing products and running a company?

Re: Constant pop-ups since trojan quarantined

This just started happening to me, also with Windows 7 SP1 and Norton 360 version 22.22.11.12

Norton blocked a program I was writing in Visual Studio, probably because it contains hook code. I unquarantined it and created an exception to ignore the file ID. A few days later, every time I exit any fullscreen app, I get the popup:

"Quick scan has completed threats have been found and removed"

But when I click on the "more" button, it opens to "recent history" and the latest quickscan is from a day prior with 0 threats found. If I view "resolved security risks" tab, there is nothing there. If I view "quarantine" there is nothing there.
