Old Guy asking for help Android/Samsung Galaxy/How to install on another device?

Hello,

I hope that I am posting my embarrassment in the right forum...

As a senior citizen luddite (with new tech anxieties) I am in need of some help...

I am looking for some assistance regarding getting Norton 360 onto my Samsung Galaxy A14 G5 smartphone. For one, I never had a smartphone before (just a dumbphone/flip phone from Consumer Cellular for REALLY old people). For another, after Norton gave up on install discs (which I was able to install on my Dell desktop by myself) I had BestBuy/GeekSquad do the installation on my HP laptop (I no longer have a GeekSquad membership...belt-tightening/downsizing), hence I don't know how to install Norton 360 on another device (Samsung Galaxy).

If someone (a kind soul on this forum) could please spell it out for me in plain English!

I am a 82 year old guy who is a techno clutz, hence any and all help would be much appreciated. :o)

Also...

I am taking various medications which make me drowsy (not to worry I gave up driving cars) thus connecting the dots correctly takes longer! :O(

Thank You in advance for having taken the time to read my post & for all the wonderful advice and info! :o)

Nothing to be embarrassed about. We all have to learn sometime. Better late than never.

To install Norton 360 on an Android device such as your phone, you start by opening the Google Play Store app on that phone. Tap on the Search box and type in Norton 360. The search results should show the 360 app, and then just tap on Install. After the app downloads and installs, look for a Sign In, or I already have a subscription link. Tap that and sign into your Norton Account using your email address and password to activate the app on your Account.

Hello peterweb,

"Hello Again!"

So, kind of you to respond & so quickly! ;O)

As per the Google Play Store...

While tinkering with the Samsung Galaxy a little bit...managed to sign-in the Google Play Store, yet not log-out (spent a great deal of time, frantically, searching how to sign-out). :o(

I have an important doctor's appointment this morning, yet I shall be sure to follow your instructions upon my return (and do this in peace and quite).

Is it true that BAD PEOPLE can infect Simeone's smartphone (Android) via a text message?

Thank You for the above info (much deserved kudos)!

Re: Old Guy asking for help Android/Samsung Galaxy/How to install on another device?

Hello,

I forgot to use reply option when posting my original response...

So, I have followed your instructions, and Norton 360 app is on my Samsung Galaxy, yet I cannot seem to sign-in successfully...

At sign-in...

It will allow me to type my user name (google address), yet it keeps switching back and forth between enter password/security check...in an endless loop.

I never have that problem on this website (same email/password).

???????

Any idea what might be going on?

How does someone sign-out/exit out of Google Play Store?

"A kudos for your thoughts!"

Re: Old Guy asking for help Android/Samsung Galaxy/How to install on another device?

You do not sign out of the Google Play Store app. You are signed in automatically from the Google Account you registered the Android phone with.

As for signing into your Norton app, are you seeing a Captcha verification that you are a human? If so, check that before you go any further. Then enter your email address, click on Continue, and then enter the password for your Norton Account.

Re: Old Guy asking for help Android/Samsung Galaxy/How to install on another device?

Hello Again,

peterweb, SO SORRY regarding my delayed response...my internet was down for several days (during which time I moved into an independent living home)...internet back up as of today...I am not one of those thoughtless Americans who takes kind &helpful Canadians for granted!

So, as to signing-in to Google Play Store...I did sign-in, yet once having signed-in no drop down option as to how to  sign-out again...What-the-Heck!

As to the Norton 360 app...

It accepts my username/email address...and then the Security Check (captcha) and then...Enter your password...which I do...then back to Enter your password (which I just did).  :o(

It works perfectly well when it comes to signing- in on this website...What-the-Heck! :o(

I  hope that you are having a better day Up North then this Old American Guy!

As I noted above, you do not sign out of the Google Play Store app. You are constantly signed in through the Google Account that you use to register your Android device. Just close the app. Done.

It accepts my username/email address...and then the Security Check (captcha) and then...Enter your password...which I do...then back to Enter your password (which I just did).  :o(

When you open the 360 app, what is shown at the top left side of the screen? Is your name shown there? If so your 360 app is activated and ready to use.  If you tap on the three bars at the top left of the screen, what is shown just under My Account? Does it show Subscription: with xxx days left? If so, you are already signed into your Norton Account.

Re: Old Guy asking for help Android/Samsung Galaxy/How to install on another device?

peterweb,

So, upon double tapping Norton 360 app...

Start your free trial. You can cancel anytime.

Activate Today

Redeem a subscription

Upon clicking on Sign In...

Username/Email

Security CHECK

Continue

or Sign in with Google

That is as far as I got...enter username/email...security check...enter password...now enter password again...enter password again (which I already have).

So, go ahead and laugh...close the Google Play Store app...by touching < (bottom right?)

Its just weird (the though of being perpetually signed-in ...my generation).

Being the VERY kind Canadian Gentleman that you are...if I cannot figure this out soon...I don't care to be billed by Norton for yet another account, end of trial period, hence how do I remove the Norton app (downloading is the easy part)?

Thank You for your great & helpful advice (and your patience with me...I am of a mind to throw my smartphone against the wall...Bruce Willis style)! ;O)

Re: Old Guy asking for help Android/Samsung Galaxy/How to install on another device?

Well don't throw the phone against the wall. You will still end up getting charged for your Norton.

It sounds like you are doing the right things but I cannot understand what we are missing here. Do you have any grandchildren living near by? I joke, but our grandchildren run circles around me when it comes to this mobile tech.

You can try contacting Norton Support to see if they can better talk you through what to look for.  Do you have a computer that you can use to contact Support?    www.norton.com/contactcs   I would suggest using phone support in your case. It can be much quick than typing in all the details. The only downside is that depending on when you call, there can be wait times. So if possible, use a landline so your smartphone will be free to work on with the agent. If the wait time seems way too long, try again at a different time.

If you still cannot get it figured out, ask the Support agent to help you cancel the subscription so you do not get billed.

Please let us know how you make out.

Re: Old Guy asking for help Android/Samsung Galaxy/How to install on another device?

peterweb,

Number 1 reason as to why I have not yet thrown my smartphone against the wall...I recalled that I am leasing it on a month-to month basis! :o)~

Beats me as why something that ought to be simple is not in the end...I mean it could be that I parked my Jeep in the designated parking space of the Techno God (outside of a BestBuy store) or I flirted with his wife ages ago...and HE still bears a grudge (rather petty if you ask me), yet cursed all the same!

No grandchildren in the picture.

I shall be sure to follow your sound advice regarding Norton Customer Service. Thank you for the link.

Wishing you a great day in Canada! :o)

If you do get in contact with Norton Support, they may offer to access your device remotely. Please accept their offer, as it is a safe option for you. I have let Norton Support access my devices in the past with no problems.

Re: Old Guy asking for help Android/Samsung Galaxy/How to install on another device?

Hello pterweb,

Thank You for adding the fact (your experience) that remote assistance with Norton is safe! ;o)

I did try to reach Norton yesterday, yet the phone # 1-800-745-6034 comes up as Spam on my smartphone. I tried chat.  I filled out the questionnaire and was given a case number (76286680), yet when I clicked on Chat Now...nothing happened...there was NO agent!

(yesterday suddenly became a rather busy/hectic day...new resident in an independent living home...waiting on the plumber to address repairs in my bathroom...being introduced to staff & other residents...sitting down with a nurse and discussing my health)

No, sadly I no longer have a landline...instead my Samsung Galaxy smartphone...which I would throw against the wall/Bruce Willis style if it were mine...Norton 360 app snafu! :o(

I wish you a "Good Day!"

Re: Old Guy asking for help Android/Samsung Galaxy/How to install on another device?

I have checked and that number is not spam. It is a legitimate Norton Support phone number.

If you are trying to access the chat from your laptop, I believe you installed the ad blocker app I suggested earlier. You need to disable the ad blocker for the Norton Support website to allow the chat window to pop up. Click on the adblock plus icon and turn off the feature for the website.

Re: Old Guy asking for help Android/Samsung Galaxy/How to install on another device?

Hello peterweb,

Thank You ever so much for pointing out to me why the chat feature did not work, and how to correct it, as well as informing me that the phone # is legitimate.

I shall be sure to call Norton this morning to avoid being double billed!

"Have a great day Up North!' :o)

Re: Old Guy asking for help Android/Samsung Galaxy/How to install on another device?

Hello peterweb,

So, funny...if it weren't sad! :o(

Well, I did call Norton Support (Mumbai, India), and did the whole remote assistance, yet during remote assistance the female tech could not see the sign-in.

She too does not know why it does not work...the continues request for me to enter my password...I enter it...load...please enter password (one long loop).

So, she suggested I uninstall the Norton 360 app...put the phone in airplane mode...turn off the phone for a few minutes...and thereafter restart the phone...download anew the Norton 360 app from Google Play Store...that should do the trick/solution, yet that is not the case...enter password...enter password...enter password!

The Techno God hates me...worse HE has cursed me! :o(

Re: Old Guy asking for help Android/Samsung Galaxy/How to install on another device?

Not sure what to say except that Samsung uses their own proprietary changes to the Android operating system. These changes have been known to cause incompatibilities with some apps. Norton included.

Out of curiosity, did you install any VPN apps, or ad blocker apps on this phone? If so have you disabled them while trying to log into your Norton Account?

As far as the trial subscription...If you never tapped on Start the Trial, but always tried to sign into your Norton Account, the trial would not have been started and you should not have to worry about any charges going forward. But it would not hurt to be diligent on watching your bank account/credit card accounts for the next couple of weeks.

At this point, you may have to wait for an Android system update for your phone. Then see if you are able to install and log into Norton.

Depending on what you are using the phone for, it may not be mandatory for you to have Norton installed. If you are not going to be using it for internet browsing and you don't install many or any apps, you should be safe. Use the laptop for those kinds of use.

Hello peterweb,

"Good Morning!" :o)

"Out of curiosity, did you install any VPN apps, or ad blocker apps on this phone? If so have you disabled them while trying to log into your Norton Account?"

No, No, and No.

I do, however, wish to improve on the cybersecurity as I have little confidence in Google Play Protect or install RoboCall Killer (or whatever they call it these days).

"As far as the trial subscription...If you never tapped on Start the Trial, but always tried to sign into your Norton Account, the trial would not have been started and you should not have to worry about any charges going forward. Good to know...I shall be sure to follow your advice.

"At this point, you may have to wait for an Android system update for your phone. Then see if you are able to install and log into Norton."

Also Good to know...

Well, the smartphone replaced the landline (as I moved/landline was not text capable). I had hoped for the basics...make phone calls and answer (important) phone calls...lots of spam. I really don't care for text messaging, yet these days everybody wants to text...and I heard someone can attach malware to sms/text! ;o(

Also I am sick-and-tired of how dictatorial Google has become. Lately I can no longer just sign-in I have to answer text messages/prove that I am me ("Was this you?"). It has become annoying...say what you will about the Germans, yet GMX.com does not want a DNA sample from me prior to my logging-in (Imacri does not have a high opinion of GMX.com).

OUT-and-about I'd like to be able to look something up. As a pre-requisite to living in an independent living home I was required to be vaccinated for covid-19 (makes sense to me). I had held out for as long as possible...on a Friday, prior to moving out/in...I was going to get the 1st Moderna shot at a Walmart Superstore pharmacy for free (I had done my homework and called in advance). Because of my health I no longer drive (my Niece sold my limited edition Jeep). So, there we were and NO vaccine just the booster shots (at Walmart after I had spoken to the pharmacist the day before over the phone). Lets just say that my Niece is a perfectionist...I had one homework assignment and I dropped-the-ball (time waster)...all the other pharmacy's also only had boosters (I took out my smartphone and googled where in-town I could get 1st Moderna shot & found a Healthcare provider/address/telephone number...my Niece's temper changed for the better). She drove me to the address and I got the 1st Moderna shot for free.

Its things like this (spontaneous things) while out-and-about that I would like to be able to do (for the most part rely on my HP laptop...once I've taken on the whole "faulty driver" is jamming up Core Isolation/Memory Integrity). I also want to throw my printer against the wall (just kidding)!

The Techno God hates me! :o(

Wishing you a "Good Day" Up North! ;o)

Someone may be able to attach malware, but as long as you do not tap on anything in the message, you should be safe.

It sounds like you will be using internet, so maybe it might be worth looking into a free antivirus app to tide you over until you can try Norton again. Here is a PCWorld article on some free antivirus apps for Android that they recommend.    https://www.pcworld.com/article/694614/best-free-antivirus-for-android.html

Good luck with your choice.

Re: Old Guy asking for help Android/Samsung Galaxy/How to install on another device?

Hello peterweb,

So, thank you for letting me know that sms/text (malware) is similar to email (malware) so long as one does not open an attachment...one should be okay (don't click on anything text wise)...okay, got it!

Thank You for going through the trouble of researching for  free A/V software for Android. :o)

I have MBAM Premium, yet there is always a snag ("The Techno God hates me!"). I no longer use the same  account when, several years ago, I first purchased MBAM Premium. I do, however, have the key Code (CC paperwork last time I renewed the subscription), hence its negotiation time with the powers that be over at MBAM.

"Have a Good Day!"
