microsoft minesweeper, solitaire, calculator stopped working

Several Microsoft products recently quit working.  They start, but just put up a blank screen.  Examples:

Calculator; Minesweeper; Solitaire & Casual Games

My Office products are working.

Running Windows 10.  Browser is Firefox (up to date).  Changes:  Just bought a Norton "Driver Update" thingie, and it updated a number of my drivers.  Other notable:  I'm supposed to have "Anti Track".  However, I have a reminder that pops up from time to time that says it's not running or that I don't have it set up/implemented.  I'm baffled.

You answered your own question.

Do not update your drivers with any product except those from the PC manufacturer.  Microsoft Update can be OK for drivers as well as the website of the manufacturer of the particular device but the PC manufacturer is the one you should rely on since many drivers are customized for your particular configuration.

Re: microsoft minesweeper, solitaire, calculator stopped working

I pay a lot of money to Norton.  If their driver updater is broken, I want them to know about it and fix it.  Keep in mind that I don't know that the driver updates caused this problem to appear.  Could be coincidence.

Let me add "Photos" to the list of things that no longer work.

Re: microsoft minesweeper, solitaire, calculator stopped working

There are a number of threads here on the new Driver Updater software causing issues. I have not seen this app yet, but understand there is supposed to be a recovery feature you can use to fix a failed update.

Others have also used Windows restore points to restore their systems. Look for one that is before the date you installed the Driver Updater software.

Re: microsoft minesweeper, solitaire, calculator stopped working

Hi Mike,

I don't think that updating hardware drivers causes problems on Microsoft products, since we don't update software drivers at all!

But I can offer to check what is happening on your system. In order to be able to help you I would like to ask you to send us your log files executing our Support Tool utility.

The support tool is available under c:\Program Files\Norton\Driver Updater\

Please run the “SupportTool.exe” and follow the instructions. Once it is done, please send me the "FILE ID" here via private message - so we can analyze the logs with your report on our server.

Thank you, Uli

Re: microsoft minesweeper, solitaire, calculator stopped working

Thank you Uli.  The problem has solved itself.  This morning, my computer locked up pretty tight.  Tighter than the lid on a pickle jar, but not quite tight as a tick.  Browser (Firefox) not responding; Ctrl-Alt-Delete giving a message that it could not display; other apps not able to start; but a vi session continued working, as did my Glasswire session.  So, I pressed the reset button on my computer and let it reboot.  I checked all the apps that had quit working, and now they work.

The Norton Driver Updater had updated six of my drivers.  (I had just purchased it, and this was the first time I had used it.)  Common sense would have told me to reboot the box after the updates.  I often wish I had been born with common sense.  Oh well, I continue to stumble through life ...

Ahh. The power of a full system restart. Gotta love it.
