How update definition virus in "norton recovery tools for nis 2009"?

Hi
I bought the full version of nis 2009, the
symantec store, the installation was successful, I
downloaded the iso image of Norton recovery tools,
burn properly with Nero 8.0

Unfortunately, after loading the interface of the CD, and
lmmissione the product key of nis 2009, when I click on
"scan now", comes out a mistake, that the definitions of
viruses are not updated, and that the program will provide
to scan your system with the definitions of 20
August 2008.

Let me know how you can update the definitions
virus, norton recovery tools, without having to
burn every time a new cd.

Thank you in advance for any advice and
solution to the problem.

Hi Naxtar1,

I have had the same situation you are facing.

To get the AV-defs updated you need an internet connection that is "always on"

eg. it is not turn off during the restart and reboot of the system.

Make sure you have such a connection.

Also do not use a wireless connection.

When I changed my modem to meet this requirement, my system now works

as intended eg. AV-defs are the latest updates.

Re: How update definition virus in "norton recovery tools for nis 2009"?

I read your post and called my ISP to ask about an "always on" internet connection.  My ISP confirmed what I suspected that with Dynamic IP service I cannot have "always on" .  Only with Static IP service may I have an "always on" internet connection.  Almost all residential users have Dynamic IP service.  Static IP is for commercial use and is very expensive for residential users.

I called Symantec Support and was told the virus defs on the iso.image are current as of the time of the download.  After that the Recovery CD will not be updated from Symantec servers with the latest defs.  The purpose of the Tool is to help with an install on an infected system.  If unable to install NIS09 successfully. Then boot to the Recovery CD which in theory was downloaded shortly after the download of NIS09 from the Online Store and hopefully any infection will be remediated by Run Scan from the Rec CD and allow a successful install of 09.  Symantec Support Supv. informed me the Rec CD will never update.  The defs on the CD are as old as when it was downloaded.   Support informed me if six months from now my System crashes the Recovery CD will always allow me to boot to my Desktop and from the NIS GUI you Run Updates and Run Scan.   I tried to suggest that an infection may disable my screen and I won't have access to NIS GUI.  He had no answer other than repeating the Rec CD will always open your Desktop.  I offered the Rec CD app should link to Symantec servers to download to the CD the latest defs and Run Scan from the CD.  He offered I burn a new iso.image weekly.   I read the Tim_Lopez Symantec Corp. post where he states the Rec CD will allow you to boot your system when you cannot boot into Windows environment.  My Desktop is part of my Windows environment.  So, someone please clarify this issue....Please

Re: How update definition virus in "norton recovery tools for nis 2009"?

bjm_  with update to above post...

received follow up call back today from Symantec to verify that I was satisfied with the Tech Support I  received regarding the Norton Recovery Tool.  I verified with this Symantec Tech all info I posted yesterday.  He confirmed all.  He did add that in addition to the virus defs when I downloaded the ISO image...the Rec CD has behavioral analysis and even if the virus defs are old the behavioral threat protocol will remediate the infection.  I will always be able to recover my system with the Rec CD.  I offered that even though my installed NIS09 product that has received updates, patches, upgrades and improvements over the past X months was unable to block or quarantine the attack that crashed my system.  Suggesting the X month old Rec CD would always be able to recover my system and perform what my resident NIS09 product could not....is just not realistic.   He advised me to download a new ISO image monthy.  He promised to investigate my concerns and get back to me.   "the saga continues"

Re: How update definition virus in "norton recovery tools for nis 2009"?

Hi Naxtar1/bjm_,

We apologize for any inconvenience that this has caused you.

To better assist us in researching this issue, could you answer the following questions:

1)    Is the computer connected to the internet through a wireless connection?
2)    Does your internet connection require authentication (Username/Password) before accessing the internet?
3)    What type of internet connection do you have? (please be as detailed as possible)
4)    Are you behind a router? If so, do you have DHCP enabled?
5)    Are you behind a proxy?
6)    How much RAM do you have on your computer?

7)  What is the make/model of your network card? If the network card came with your computer, what is the make/model of your computer?

Thank you for your patience while we research the cause of this behavior.

Re: How update definition virus in "norton recovery tools for nis 2009"?

Mr. Lopez.... this is bjm_......I hope I did not step on anyone's toes by posting reply to Kurt and Naxtar1.....Are you requesting info from Naxtar1 and bjm_.    Symantec Techs had me convinced the Recovery CD does not update.... so now I'm wondering why all the questions about routers and NIC card and ISP etc.

Naxtar1 and I have installed NIS09 and burned the ISO.   I thought I would help by sharing the info I received from Symantec about the Recovery CD and the info about "always on" Internet connections.  Hope I did not muck up the water.

Respectfully submitted,

Not to confuse this issue, but if most home users have a dynamic ISP connection(?) then how would we be able to properly use NIS2009?

Re: How update definition virus in "norton recovery tools for nis 2009"?

Hello NY1986.....happy to hear that I'm not the only one confused....I only got into this because I didn't understand (also) about having to have "static ISP" service...."always on" Internet connection.   So, I called my ISP.....then I called Symantec..... I don't know if the post from Kurt is accurate or if the Symantec explanation is correct.....I'm running NIS09 and I burned my ISO.   Now, we wait to see what Lopez has to say.  I thought the Recovery CD would update.  Symantec says it will not.  The virus defs are as of the day you downloaded the ISO.  Have you found the NIS09 pdf User Guide link.  It has a brief description of the Recovery CD.   Naxtar1 has not come back after his post....so, maybe Kurt was right?   I'll post the link to the User Guide if you need it     bjm_

Re: How update definition virus in "norton recovery tools for nis 2009"?

Hello again NY 1986....sorry for the two part post....I just remembered the Recovery Tool is an ISO image...it's fixed...all info on one track....the CD is closed for business....cannot add to CD....That's what Naxtar1 is asking ...How do I update the vir defs on the Rec Tool without having to burn a new CD every time.....I got so lost in the reply to Naxtar1 from Kurt....I had a senior moment...my train left the track.  The modified date on the Recovery Tool download site is 9/08/08....so, I guess burning a new CD weekly like Symantec told me makes no sense.   When Tim Lopez chimes back I hope he will accept my apology for my senior moment.  Naxtar1 just wanted to know how to keep the Rec Tool defs updated and Kurt has a post about an "always on" Internet connection.   Again, I am sorry for trying to fit Kurt's reply into Naxtar1 question.  My Bad!!!    I'll go stand in the corner now.    bjm_  has to nap now

Re: How update definition virus in "norton recovery tools for nis 2009"?

Hello bjm_,

I was requesting this information from both of you. Could you please answer all of the questions so that we can figure this out? The Recovery CD, under the proper circumstances, will indeed update the definitions before the scan.

Re: How update definition virus in "norton recovery tools for nis 2009"?

Hello NY1986,

The questions asked should not be used as assumptions to what we do or do not support. The questions were asked simply so we could narrow down the Recovery CD situation.

Once I have more information on the computer/connection type, I'll be able to better determine what's going on here.

Re: How update definition virus in "norton recovery tools for nis 2009"?

Hello bjm_,

Could you launch the command prompt (Start, Run, cmd.exe, Enter) and then type IPCONFIG /all. If you could copy all of the text in that screen and PM it to me (Clicking on my name in this post, then "send private message").

You can make a screenshot by pushing the Print Screen key, then going to MS Paint and going to Edit, Paste to paste the screenshot. Then, simply e-mail it to me. I'll send you my e-mail address in a PM (look for the 1 New) and you can e-mail me the screenshot too.

Re: How update definition virus in "norton recovery tools for nis 2009"?

From bjm_   To all that happen upon this post and are still unsure as to the update functionality of the Recovery Tool ISO.   I am posting the body of the email I just received from Symantec Support....

Response (Ashish Tirkey) - 11/06/2008 06:42 AM
Hello Benjamin,
Welcome back to Norton Support.
Please accept my apologies for providing incorrect information about the Norton Recovery Tool. When you boot the computer using the Norton Recovery Tool to do a scan, it does downloads the virus definition from the Symantec website before performing the scan. The virus definition gets loaded in the Random Access Memory (RAM) of your computer temporarily till is finish the scan and you eject the Norton Recovery Tool CD then restart the computer.

Since the Norton Recovery Tool is build on the Windows PE environment it does not save the virus definition on the hard drive except the RAM. Next, time when you do a scan with Norton Recovery Tool the latest virus definition will get downloaded once again so there is no need to worry about the out of date virus definition or updating the Tool manually.

For more information on how to Norton Recovery Tool function, I suggest that you refer the link provided below:

Please let me know if you need any assistance with Norton Program.
