You can try turning off archived file scanning. It sounds like there must be a large number of archives on the drive because the number of items scanned (41M) is much greater than the number of items scanned.
The only other idea i have is that there is a recursive symlink on the drive (e.g. a symlink points to file A which is a symlink that points back to file A). I can't really explain the behavior any other way.

Open the Norton AntiVirus application ( either Applications/Symantec Solutions/Norton AntiVirus double-click ) or use the Symantec Menu ( the Symantec icon in the menu bar ): Open Norton AntiVirus.
On the left hand side of the window click on "Automatic Protection". Then click on "Auto-Protect: Configure..." ( you may need to click the lock and authenticate to enable the button ).
This should open the "Auto-Protect Configuration" dialog. Turn off "Scan Compressed Files". See if this fixes the problem and please report back on the forum.
Thanks

That does seem strange. Perhaps there is a recursive link, as Ryan suggested. Offhand, all I can think is to try breaking up the scan into smaller pieces, maybe this will reveal where the problem lies. By default, the "Entire System" scan will scan all local volumes. If you have more than one volume mounted, you could try scanning each individually (use the "Choose Files" button to select what you want to scan). If you only have a boot drive, you could scan individual folders on the top level of the drive.
