Ghost 15 and Win 7 Issue with Missing Files

Hi Awhile ago I posted about an issue with Ghost 14 and Win7, http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=other&thread.id=13754&view=by_date_ascending&page=1, well since it wont let me respond to that post I thought I would create a new one.

I downloaded the 30 day trial, and on running it I found the same issue as Ghost 14 had - The backup was around 40GB smaller than it should of been, 35.4GB should be used up by the Recorded TV Format from Media Centre (dvr-ms and wtv) these are not there.

I created a full system backup, of the c:\ drive which includes the recorded TV folder, located at c:\users\public\recorded tv.

So any thoughts as to why Ghost 15, supposedly Win7 compatible fails to back up TV recordings? I am also concerned that there is a 4GB discrepancy that I cannot locate, making me wonder if something important is missing.

Regards

Re: Ghost 15 and Win 7 Issue with Missing Files

Hi Sassbs,

Welcome to the forum. I checked the other thread for reference. Just so you know any thread which has not had responses for 30 days becomes permanently locked.

So this is the same as in the previous thread, you are doing a full Backup My Computer and not File and folder backup correct?

The size difference could be explained by compression being used. Can you check how your compression is configured?

Thanks

Allen

Re: Ghost 15 and Win 7 Issue with Missing Files

Hi AllenM Thanks for the response, Yes Its a full Backup of the c:\ drive and not a file and folder backup. I have used high compression however this is not the difference that I am seeing, as I ignored that file size, what I did was mount the recovery set and using Windows compare the used size of the drive to give me the rough indication of what it had backed up. Seeing it 40GB of a difference I went and checked the Recorded TV Folder and found the 2 sub folders, but no files in the folders at all.

Very interesting. Ghost does ignore a couple of things like the pagefile for example since it is never required to restore a computer. But it is hard to understand why the files you mentioned would be skipped. Can you supply the exact path and file name of the files you see missing? Once I have this I'll do some more research. I will probably also create test files on my computer in the same path and file name and run a test.

By the way, which version of W7 do you have? Home, Home Premium, etc. And is it 32 or 64 bit?

Thanks much for the update.

Allen

Re: Ghost 15 and Win 7 Issue with Missing Files

Yeah No problem, the exact path is C:\Users\Public\Recorded TV

Examples of 2 of the files are:

Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2009_BBC ONE Scot_2009_08_31_18_58_00.wtv and

Jane Doe- The Wrong Face_Five_23_08_2008_13_49_03.dvr-ms

The other files in the folder have the same naming structure, the files used to back up under vista and Save and Restore fine which is why I find it so odd.

It's Ultimate 32-Bit I have will get hold of the 64-Bit Disk and try that instead, incase it makes a difference.

Re: Ghost 15 and Win 7 Issue with Missing Files

HI Sassbs,

Thanks for the update. I'm planning to do my own upgrade to Ghost 15 by Monday, right now I still have Ghost 14. I will try this test first on Ghost 14 and then again after I upgrade to Ghost 15. This way I can compare the results to see if there is any difference.

So please allow me some time and I'll be sure to post the results of these tests by Monday.

Thanks again

Allen

Hi No rush, I will also be testing it out over the weekend trying to figure it out.

Hi Sassbs,

I am actually upgrading to Ghost 15 as I write this. What can I say? I've been anxious too!

What I have tried thus far. I created the exact file names you specified with Ghost 14 and I've done both an incremental and an independant recovery backup. The files in question were present and intact in both cases.

Can you do me a favor while I continue testing this with Ghost 15? Please boot from your recovery CD and do an independant backup from there and let me know if these files are present.

More to follow.

Thanks

Re: Ghost 15 and Win 7 Issue with Missing Files

Hi Sassbs,

I have finished upgrading to Ghost 15. I performed the tests again and still do not see a problem on my computer.

On a hunch can you check something for me? In the Tasks page please click on Run or Manage Backups, then highlight the drive in question and click Edit Settings. Click Next twice and then click Advanced. Is the Divide into smaller size option checked? If desired you can paste this image into the thread by clicking Shift+Print Screen combination. Then bring up MS Paint application and hit Ctrl+V which will paste the picture into the Paint application. Then in Paint select Save As from the File menu. Save the image to your desktop as a JPEG image.

Then please paste into the thread (after clicking Reply) by clicking on the symbol near the top which looks like a green tree. You can then browse to your image and click Insert Image. You can size the image so that it looks correct in the thread.

It will take a while before this image becomes visible to me since the moderator has to approve it first.

Thanks

Hi Thanks here is the picture, I will try moving the files to other locations and another system to see if that works.

Hi Sassbs,

Thanks for the update. The image is not visible yet since the moderator has to approve it first. I'll check back in the morning.

Did you try running a backup from the recovery CD to see if there was any difference?

Thanks

Re: Ghost 15 and Win 7 Issue with Missing Files

Hi I have not tried the backup from the recovery cd yet, but I have moved the files under a recorded tv folder in my name, and set it as a library folder and they backed up, so for some reason it just doesn't like the files being under public.

I did see some MS Documentation and replies on MSDN and Technet forums saying that they had blocked recorded tv from being backed up in 7 at the media rights holders request, so I wonder if that has something to do with it, and they have blocked the c:\public\recorded tv folder from being seen by backups fully.

Oh well at lest there is a workaround now.

Thanks for the help

Re: Ghost 15 and Win 7 Issue with Missing Files

Hi Sassbs,

I'd be interested in seeing the link where you saw this documentation. The OS would not be able to prevent Ghost from seeing these files, I don't see how that would be possible. Remember too that Ghost is doing a sector based backup, not a standard file copy operation. Your previous thread also mentions that a manual one works Image backup works. Can you confirm this? If so, then this would further indicate that the OS has nothing to do with the issue.

Actually this brings up an interesting point because the testing I done yesterday was a manual recovery point as I had forgotten at the time about you saying this problem only occurs from a scheduled backup.

I'll try that out.

Re: Ghost 15 and Win 7 Issue with Missing Files

Hi Sassbs,

I did do a bit more testing with both scheduled and manual backups and I am not able to recreate the problem with those files missing. E.g., they are present in the backup image in every test I have tried.

The only other missing variable is that I am doing this on Vista instead of W7. Unfortunately, not much I can do on that one as I probably won't be upgrading to W7 for 2-3 more months yet. I always like to wait for SP 1 before upgrading to a new OS.

If anyone reads this and has W7, would you mind doing this test?

Thanks

Re: Ghost 15 and Win 7 Issue with Missing Files

Hi Sassbs,

Another question for you. In the other thread on this topic you had indicated that a manual backup includes these files but a scheduled one does not. Can you elaborate on how you invoke the manual backup? Do you go into Run or Manage Backup or do you click on One Time Backup from the Tasks tab?

Thanks

Re: Ghost 15 and Win 7 Issue with Missing Files

hi AllanM sorry for the lack of replies had a death in the family so not been able to look at this, and doubt I will get the chance for a few weeks now.

it was a one time backup of files and folders if I remember correctly that allowed the files to be backed up
