Installing Norton internet security 2011 after complete re-install of Windows

Due to some serious errors being reported in event viewer ie such as modification of tcpip.sys file. I'm considering doing a total re-install of Windows. I would like to know though whether I can download Norton internet securtiy 2011 to disc, then after re-installing Windows, use my current Norton 2010 activation code key to activate Norton 2011. Am I likely to face any problem doing this?

Hi reactivate,

That should be no problem. You can download and save NIS 2011 to an external drive or CD from here:

www.norton.com/nis11

As you said, you will need your product key to type in after installing NIS 2011. Also, run LiveUpdate after installation.

During activation, a notification may pop up saying that you have exceeded the number of allowed activations. If this happens, please contact Symantec Customer Support, and they will reset your activations for you. You can chat with them for free over here:

Hi reactivate,

Rather than reinstalling your operating system, I would recommend simply running the Windows System File Checker if you suspect that a system file has been damaged.

Hello reactivate

It is possible that your serious errors with that file might be caused by a rootkit also which damaged that file and others. You might want to visit one of the free malware removal sites to see if you do have a rootkit .

Please go to one of these free Forums for help in removing your bad malware or rootkits.

Thanks flopot, I already know about those sites, and to be honest with you I would rather go to the trouble of doing a clean install of Windows than go through all the hassle of working with some geek to try to identify and resolve a problem. From what I have seen it is often not the easiest of solutions getting help from one of those sites. It often takes a lot of time and downloading various anti malware tools with absolutely no guarantee of resolving the issue and maybe even the possibility of making things worse. Also a clean install will get rid of some of the crap that has built up on my system from programs not fully uninstalling. I tried using system restore but unfortunately that is not working for some reason.

You will need to disable tamper protection in Norton before you can do a system restore. If that does not allow the restore, it is likely that malware is preventing it.  If you are planning a Windows system restore to an earlier time, it is unlikely to do what you want it to do and can add to the problems.
