Windows update KB3004394 issues
Windows update KB3004394 causes the following issues on my Windows 7 x64 Ultimate system:
==================
I noticed one post that would relate to me
<< Seems to affect only x64 systems as my friend with x86 is fine it seems. So the x64 KB3004394 install has some broken files. Hopefully it gets fixed soon. Uninstalled in the meantime and all works. Didn't have any issues with MS updates though with it installed. >>
since I'm running 32 bit Win7 and it would make sense that 64 bit would be more sensitive.
But I'll decline that one until .....

KB3004394 installed also on my Win7 32 bit machine with no issues so far.

Me Too, on my Windows 7 32 bit, No issue.

Krusty13:Yes I have installed that update and no issues on my machines.
32 or 64 bit?

Run from cmd sfc /verifyonly before attesting that you are not having issues, issues are not always visible like BSOD, or the pc exploding or freezing, if you mean "no issues" by that.
This update is removed from WU and there is a reason for that, my very limited knowledge says...
For me, as usual, since the last August story, WU will be visited next week...
EDIT: Do not run sfc /scannow cause Windows will attempt to fix any potential issues and I'm not sure this will do any good now, just run sfc /verifyonly and see just the report, this command does not alter your config.

Oh, great. I just uninstalled this update from my laptop and now it's in a loop, preparing to configure Windows, after the restart.
Hard shutdown and then restart ?

@ F4E,
I suggested, dear F4E, that users should run a specific command before.
It would be very easy for me to just say to uninstall the KB and save me many lines of writing.
There is a reason why I said this, although I suspect that very soon many "savvies" here will jump on this and try to "eat" me alive once more, no problem.
The purpose is to see what errors, if any, sfc reports.
Let me know...
Cheers and sorry for your experience.

Sorry, Apostolos. I'd uninstalled it before you posted.

Running sfc /verifyonly now, I noticed I got a yellow UAC popup instead of the normal blue one.
What is going on at Microsoft? Every bloody month we see crap updates!
Results of sfc /verifyonly:
Windows Resource Protection found integrety violations.
Now what???????
Solution No 1 SSR13 etc...
Before this run from cmd
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"
and paste the results here: (not PDF, .txt).

Krusty13:I can restore an image before this bullshit if I have to but I'd rather not if I can help it. It screws the recovery partition on this machine.
But if I've got no choice....
I wonder if it is worth sfc /scannow at this point? What do you think, Apostolos?
The problem is that you need to run sfc /scannow in order for Windows to report the attempts to fix/not fix items, my concern is that after a faulty update will System File Checker fix things or create more mess???
If I was you, I would certainly go via the SSR path, just a question, you also have a complete backup of the disk, Recovery, System Reserved, OS, & MBR included, right??... or you just backed up the OS partition??

According to F4E, when he uninstalled, laptop got stuck in a loop.
As for your Recovery partition, on the laptop, you know that I have laptops with recovery partition too, I've noticed that if I restore Recovery+ OS+System Reserved+ First Hard Disk Track (with MBR), eveything is perfect, If I restore only the first 3, my imaging program creates a custom BCD and I have the issue you described, this can be solved in the future, no problem.
Let us know how the uninstall went...

I had to pull the battery on my laptop, as it wouldn't shut down. I ran sfc /verify only, and it came back with no integrity violations.
It's now uninstalled, although not how I would have liked. I've run checks, and all seems to be ok. Fingers are crossed !

Kudos to F4E!!
Well done!
I love M$, quality control rules... for each KB.
By the way, where is Krusty13, still uninstalling the M$ KB???

Hey Dave,
Be sure not to miss KB 3004394 when updating!!
Cheers my friend,
@ F4E,
Krusty13 is a good troubleshooter so I suggest that you check cmd, System Time, Event Viewer and other things because it appears, according to Krusty, that even uninstalling that KB, there are some mortal remains on the system.
Post back..
Posted: 10-Dec-2014 | 10:08PM · Permalink
I did all that. Ran some troubleshooters, and a couple of problems were fixed. That's why I'm calling ok, at the moment !
I'll keep you posted if any further problems.

Same here, Dave. I'm gonna do what Apostolos suggests. In future, wait for a while before I download anything from WU !

Krusty13:My signature shows x64 Hugh.
Who reads signatures? I know who sent the message, I think. <g>
Besides, in my case I multiple boot several versions of Windows and the Forum System doesn't provide for detecting your actual OS ....

I have always had WUD set to notify but not download OR install ... and wait a day or two. It then tells me that is not the safest but that horse is wearing blinkers .....

Was found that KB3004394 is causing issues only for X64 systems, it is true?!"@%&y
Many are reporting that uninstalling such flawed update everything is resolved.
It will be really so?
FWIW, my Windows 7 X32 is still working properly.
Re M$ updates should be treated like Virus, from today onwards
what else...

Did you run sfc /verifyonly ??

From what I'm reading at sevenforums, this update prevents also the installation of future Windows Updates...
Have fun... next month.

I want to try it right now Apostolos.
I'll still be here to post feedback asap.
Re your second post, my niece called me last night because he could not install IE11 on Windows 7 64-bit. Error xxxxx, then yyyy and then... Bingo !!!!!!!!!!!
Posted: 11-Dec-2014 | 10:36AM · Permalink
Hi Apostolos,
sfc /verifyonly is clean. Here's the screenshot.
The problem should involve only the 64-bit systems, I think.
Cheers,

Do you still have it installed? If yes, I would suggest to get rid of it.
MS has already removed it from the Download Center.
Also, monitor Event Viewer and other MMC functions, UAC as well.
Post back if anything "strange" happens...
Posted: 11-Dec-2014 | 1:36PM · Permalink
I did not notice anything strange, but I thought to uninstall it anyway.
Ever since MS has already removed it from the Download Center, it's not a good sign.
I could think to stay safe today, but then what? M$ updates are no longer reliable. Since August /2014 no one is more comfortable for their WU failures.
Perhaps they have forgotten that there are hundreds of millions of users who may be constantly at risk!

Done! - Uninstalled.

I found two articles posted today on the InfoWorld site regarding this KB:
KB 2553154, 2726958 clobber Excel ActiveX; KB 3011970 Silverlight, KB 3004394 Root Cert pulled
Microsoft on KB 3004394 patch: Uninstall it…pretty please
The second article points to a thread here in the Microsoft Answers forum. A few users in that thread noted that the recommended uninstall didn't solve the problem and that a system restore using a restore point created earlier than the 09-Dec-2014 Patch Tuesday update was required.
I'm running 32-bit Vista and didn't receive this update so I can't speak personally to the effectiveness of either the uninstall or system restore.

@ Imacri
Thanks for info....I have KB3008923 waiting in the queue. You may also.

Per Tibbies4Life thread KB3024777, Microsoft has released a new update that removes the KB3004394 Windows Root Cert Patch for Win 7 delivered on 09-Dec-2014 that was revoked today by Microsoft. Here's the link to the Microsoft support article for KB3024777:

Thanks, Imacri. Microsoft does it again !
Posted: 12-Dec-2014 | 9:00AM · Permalink
The KB3024777 is some kind of removal tool for the previous faulty KB3004394, it's 29kb in size and I hope that users who did not install or have uninstalled KB3004394, will not "play" with their system integrity and attempt to install KB3024777.
It's only for users who still have the previous KB3004394 installed.
Cheers,
Posted: 12-Dec-2014 | 9:19AM · Permalink
Correct, Apostolos,
This could cause even more problems...
I think the KB3024777 is not offered to be downloaded if the KB3004394 is not in the system.
This I heard.

After the uninstall as Apostolos says, it no longer shows in WU. I'm just glad it's gone !
