Norton 360 Toolbar is crashing Firefox on close

Firefox updatated recently, 37.0.1, i now get random crashes and 90% of the time the browser will crash on close. So i refreshed firefox and started enabling addons, when i enabled 360 toolbar 2014.7.12.7 and restarted firefox, the problem started again, i disabled norton toolbar and firefox is fine. I also notice sometimes typing becomes slow when the toolbar is enabled almost like some memory leak. PC INFO: Win 8.1 64bit, i7 4770k @ 4.23ghz, 32 gig of ram, Gtx Titans 2 way SLI.

Cheers

Re: Norton 360 Toolbar is crashing Firefox on close

Hi phat monkey:

I'm having a similar problem with FF 37.x on my 32-bit Vista system with NIS v. 21.7.0.11.  A crash typically occurs about 1 min after FF is closed and has a crash signature of [@ shutdownhang | WaitForSingleObjectEx |... .  I'm not 100% certain of the cause yet but disabling the Norton Toolbar v. 2014.7.12.7 seems to stop the crashes.  See my thread <here> in the Firefox forum.

If you want to see details about your own FF crashes, go to Help | Troubleshooting Information | Crash Reports for Last 3 Days.  Clicking on any of those links will take you to the full crash report on the Mozilla Crash Reports site.  Here are links to my last three crashes from this morning:

The Modules tab of my Firefox crash reports always highlight IPSEng32.dll and IPSLdr32.dll which are associated with Norton's Intrusion Protection feature.

I'm not an expert at reading FF crash reports to know if this is significant but I've been testing almost a week now (clean reinstall of FF 37.0.1 and new Firefox user profile) and FF never crashes if my Norton Toolbar v. 2014.7.12.7 is disabled.  Also note that I do not have the Adobe Flash plugin for Firefox or Java RE currently installed.

I forgot to mention this comment I found in the Firefox forum in adhane's thread titled Firefox Crashes:

'Starting in Firefox 36, there is a function to track whether Firefox did not shut down normally within a minute and if there was a problem, it captures data on a presumed "shutdown hang".

On my system, FF 36.x shut down without crashing and the shutdown hangs didn't start until I upgraded to FF 37.x. / NTB v. 2014.7.12.7.

Re: Norton 360 Toolbar is crashing Firefox on close

Just to add to the list, I updated to FF 37.0.1 two days ago, and ever since I've been seeing the same exact problem.  Running NIS 21.7.0.11 with toolbar 2014.7.12.7.  Around 75% of the time when I close FF, the *.exe is still running in task manager.  If I don't close it manually via task manager about 1 minute later I get a crash window.  Pretty sure if I force it to close I don't get the crash.

When I disable the Norton toolbar this problem no longer occurs.

HI Mohan_G:

Thanks for looking into this.  Just wanted to add that I disabled my Norton Toolbar v. 2014.7.12.7 on April 10th and haven't had a single Firefox v. 37.0.1 crash (on FF exit or otherwise) since then.  I don't use Identity Safe so that toolbar feature was disabled on my system (Settings | Web | Identity Safe | Identity Safe | OFF) when the Norton Toolbar was enabled and Firefox was crashing.

Norton Toolbar is not a Firefox Plugin.  Norton Toolbar is a Firefox Extension.    Do you want Plugins or Extensions or Add-ons
FF 37.x has been crash prone for me....certainly a lot more than recent FF versions.

Hi Mohan_G:

I've bolded the add-ons phat monkey and I appear to have in common:

Extensions

Adblock Plus 2.6.9 (Enabled)
Mozilla Archive Format 3.1.0 (Enabled)
Norton Toolbar 2014.7.12.7 (Disabled)
Video DownloadHelper 5.1.2 (Disabled)

Plugins

OpenH264 Video Codec by Cisco 1.3 (Always Activate)
iTunes Application Detector 1.0.11 (Ask to Activate)
Windows Presentation Foundation 3.5.30729.1 (Ask to Activate)

I ran the above configuration (NTB and VDH disabled) from 10-Apr to 15-Apr and didn't have a single crash.  I enabled the NTB the evening of 15-Apr and FF crashed with the signature [@ shutdownhang | ntdll.dll@0x65b44 ] the first time the browser was closed. Like my previous shutdown hangs, Norton's IPSEng32.dll and IPSLdr32.dll were highlighted on the Modules tab of the Firefox crash report.

Hi,django. Same specs as you, and Firefox 37.0.1 is working fine.

If you haven't already, try running Live Update until no more are found, and THEN download the FULL version of Firefox from Mozilla.

Overinstall it on your current version, and reboot.

See if that puts things into alignment, and check your addons are working properly.

Hi django:

The topic of this thread is Firefox v37.0.1 crashing on exit when the Norton Toolbar v2014.7.12.7 [N360/NIS (2014) v21.7.0.11]) is enabled, so your issue with NS (2015) v22.2.0.31 is likely unrelated.

FF v37.0.1 fixes a known issue with startup crashes (see the release notes <here>) so try performing a clean reinstall of FF with the latest v. FF37.0.1 installer as instructed in the Mozilla support article Firefox Keeps Crashing at Startup.  This will ensure that any orphaned files in your Win 7 folder at C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox from older versions of FF are deleted before you reinstall.

If FF v37.0.1 continues to crash at startup after the clean reinstall and you can confirm that your crashes stop when you disable the Norton Toolbar (v2015.2.1.3 if your NS is fully patched) at Tools | Add-ons then try posting your problem in the Norton Toolbar / Norton Identity Safe board.

If FF v37.0.1 continues to crash at startup after the clean reinstall regardless of whether the Norton Toolbar is enabled or disabled then try the steps in the Mozilla support article Troubleshoot and Diagnose Firefox Problems - a browser refresh (step 6) and reinstall of your browser extensions might be helpful.  Also note that a FF v37.0.2 update is apparently being tested for release, although I'm not sure if this patch is intended to fix any FF startup crashes.

Hello lancol

You are supposed to use the Beta program on a computer that isn't your main one. I believe you have to create a separate Norton Account just for the Beta. I have never done this since I have only this computer to use. I believe the instructions are in this link. You have to go to the Beta Center to get the Beta and then you will get a 14 day key for that period of time.

Re: Norton 360 Toolbar is crashing Firefox on close

The crashing problem in Firefox is only because of Norton Identity Safe Toolbar. We tested since a year now. If you disable it, no crash. If you enable again FF crashes. This has nothing to do with plugins or extensions. Tested several options since a  year. Norton is not able to solve this problem since a long time. This means, time to change Norton to any other one..

Re: Norton 360 Toolbar is crashing Firefox on close

Interesting.  This mat account for the fact that my laptop, which has Norton Toolbar disabled, doesn't crash, but my PC does.  On balance, I'd rather have the irritation of dodgy FF closure than lose the facility of the Norton ID Safe.

I also notice sometimes typing becomes slow when the toolbar is enabled almost like some memory leak..

This is the big issue for me, along with scrolling hesitation.  Sure does look like a memory leak, with FF memory eventually climbing over 2gb -- and then sometimes locking up (or, less frequently, crashing) -- when I have Norton Toolbar enabled.  Vs. smooth sailing, and FF memory topping out at about 1gb, with the Norton Toolbar FF addon disabled.  So I'm now keeping the Norton Toolbar disabled, but I miss my Safe Search icons (that's the only Toolbar function I ever have enabled).  This is the first time in 5+ years of using FF and NIS Toolbar together that I've seen this kind of issue.

Re: Norton 360 Toolbar is crashing Firefox on close

I finally gave up waiting for a fix and permanently disabled my Norton Toolbar (NTB) v2014.7.12.7 and installed the Web of Trust (WOT) extension to handle my website safety ratings.  I was reluctant to disable the NTB since Firefox crash reports can provide Mozilla with valuable data about the underlying cause of common crashes and drive the prioritization of bug fixes.  Shutdown hangs now account for a significant portion of all reported FF v37.0.2 crashes (see the top crashers for v37.0.2  <here>) and Bug 1127270 indicates that beta versions of FF38 are still susceptible to crashing on exit with an [@ shutdownhang | WaitForSingleObjectEx | ... signature.

According to the  Mozilla Release Calendar, Firefox 38 is scheduled to be released next Tuesday (12-May-2015) so I'd be pleasantly surprised if we saw a fix for NTB v2014.7.12.7 before the next FF38-compatible update for the Norton Toolbar is released via LiveUpdate.

I myself use also Norton 360 and FF37, and always had crashing problems with Norton toolbar since one and half years. Now, I will go with Norton Security with Backup, since Symantec discontinued with Norton360. Do you think, if the crashing problem still exists in Norton Security, and do you see any disadvantages here if I go with Norton Security? I am asking this question, because I am not sure if Symantec is still one of the best security software solutions, although they were not able to solve even a crashing problem since many years. Re: Norton 360 Toolbar is crashing Firefox on close

Not to be too cynical here, but this ongoing situation makes me wonder if NIS and 360 are really still fully "supported"?  I was glad I discovered Norton Toolbar as the culprit just before I either (1) spent all day (or longer) re-setting FF and re-configuring it to my preferences; or (2) ditching FF altogether and trying Chrome.  Frankly the intermittent crashes didn't bother me as much as when it started progressing to *extreme* sluggishness in FF.  It's like a breath of fresh air since I disabled the buggy Norton Toolbar.

But I do really miss the Norton safety icons.  I've used WOT before (when having some temporary Norton Toolbar upgrade issues), and it's not really a good substitute.  For example many of the sites they mark as "danger" or "caution" are so-designated based just on content judgments -- often laughable  -- of contributors, rather than bona fide evidence of malware.  One that calls himself "Superman" is particularly bad, and his proclamations seem to wield a lot of influence over the WOT ratings.  But I'll certainly take a smooth-sailing FF with WOT over a frustratingly sluggish and crash-prone FF with Norton safety ratings.

Hi sahlan:

The issue with Firefox being discussed in this thread is a specific problem that only started with the release of the FF37-compatible Norton Toolbar v2014.7.12.7 [N360/NIS (2014) v.21.x] on 31-Mar-2015, namely the crashing of FF37.x when the browser is closed.  Phoneman reported <here> in this thread that an upgrade to a beta version of NSBU (2015) v22.5.0.79 solved this particular issue, but if Firefox has been crashing on your computer for over a year then your problem is likely unrelated and there is no way for us to predict if an upgrade to NSBU v22.x will stop your crashes.

I don't read many of the posts in the Norton Security board but I know of one longstanding issue with NS v22.x and iTunes v12.x where many NS users are unable to sync and/or eject their Apple iPods from within iTunes.  See kenlyndon's thread Norton Security and iTunes if you have iTunes for Windows installed on your PC.  Also note that NS will not install on computers that have an older CPU chip that does not support the SSE2 instruction set, but these are usually very old Win XP computers with CPUs that pre-date the Intel Pentium 4 and AMD Athlon 64 processors - see the support article <here>.

As Imacri mentioned, if you're using an older iPod with itunes, you may want to hold off on Norton Security.  My 160 GB iPod classic had issues with NS, and there are plenty of other folks having similar issues with synching non IOS ipods.  For now I've decided to renew my NIS 2014 license (or track down a new copy) as NIS plays fine with iTunes.  The Firefox crash during closing is minor compared to my iTunes headache.  Hopefully they'll figure out the itunes issue before I'm forced to move to NS.  NIS /N360 still work fine and are supported by Symantec, and I'm currently happy with NIS

Not true....  no need to inform about options that do not exist.  Other than you may transition (purchase activate register) to new offering and as reported.  You may request remaining days from current Norton added to new offering Norton Security.

Re: Norton 360 Toolbar is crashing Firefox on close

IMO, it's not just a question of whether a product is still officially being supported, but also a question of the resources being allocated to maintaining it.  Is it possible that fixing bugs in the no-longer-sold products like 360 and NIS has taken on lower priority than enhancing and addressing issues in the new core product, NS?

Hello

Not too long ago NIS and N360 and NAV got a new version update to 7.0.11. Version 22 didn't get any updates at that time. Things that need to be fixed in version 21 are still being worked on.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 10 Pro 64 bit Norton Core Security Plus 22.18.0.213 Core Firmware 282 I E 11 Chrome latest version.

Thanks for your answer, bjm_, but I don't think that's satisfactory.  I've paid a subscription for a year's use of N360 (still 308 days - a long time to be relying on something that's not 100% supported, if that's really the case).  It would be nice to be informed about intentions in advance of decisions, so that I have time to consider the options, especially the way Norton snatches my money for the next year before the subscription expires.  Why would I be thinking about changing to a different product if I wasn't made aware that the current product was no longer appropriate/reliable?
