State of the Forums

Hi folks,

Our team has been hard at work fixing the issues you've seen on the Norton Community. I appreciate your patience during this very stressful time. I know change is hard, and learning new processes can be frustrating. I am grateful to have such an understanding group. I wanted to share some of the progress we've made on the community, and show you the things we're working on. I'll update the status of the problems that we are still working to fix as they get resolved.

FIXES

- Indent button does not add indents to post (edited Sept 24, 2015)
- See who clicked Me Too on a post (edited Sept 24, 2015)
- Allow users to jump to last post in thread (Edited April 30, 2015)
- User Account merging (between the different community languages) (Edited April 30, 2015)
- Add "edited" information to OP or replies, along with date and time of edit (edited March 10, 2015)
- Add breadcrumbs (Home > Forums > Category > Board) to the bottom of threads (edited March 10, 2015)
- See who gave Kudos to a post (edited Feb 11, 2015)
- Include pagination links at top of thread (added below OP) (edited Feb 11, 2015)
- Delete autosave draft once user clicks "Save" (edited Dec 2, 2014)
- Images remain unmoderated (edited Nov 10, 2014)
- Notification emails sent for content that is not published (e.g. staged Blog posts or announcements) (edited Nov 6, 2014)
- Links in subscription emails go to 1st post in thread (only seen for threads that span multiple pages) (edited Nov 6, 2014)
- Added ">>" (jump to last page) and "<<" (jump to first page) links for threads with multiple pages (edited Nov 6, 2014)
- "Number of posts" on categories, boards and mini user profiles (seen on threads) changed to OP + Replies (edited Nov 4, 2014)
- On Chrome 38, previewing a message results in a blank screen (edited Nov 4, 2014)
- Autosubscribe (Account > Edit > "Automatically subscribe me to all topics I participate in") functions correctly
- Fixed error 503 when attempting to access account
- Replies in threads are now in Chronological Order, despite editing or inline-replies (NOTE: threads that existed prior to the fix cannot be re-sorted. This is fixed for new threads and new edits)
- Autosave drafts feature added
- Quoting a post adds the quoted user's name to the quote box (NOTE: it make take a few days for you to see it. javascript cache must be cleared first)
- Kudos transferred from old community
- "Entire board" subscriptions allow for both "original post (OP)" and "OP+ replies" subscriptions
- Default sort for Board is "latest post or reply"

KNOWN ISSUES

- Adding kudos or clicking Subscribe messes with the "time to edit" display
- Add Macros, image upload, and Quote functionality to mobile layout
- Allow user to see her/his unapproved image when previewing a post
- Delete autosave draft once user clicks "Save"
- Allow use of uploaded images as avatars
- "Mark all as read" leaves posts unread
- "Search" lists only OPs, though occasionally the results are threads that contain replies with the search terms
- Replies not appearing after posting; must logout/login again to see post
- notification emails sent for all translations of subscribed content (e.g. Announcement blog articles translated in all 5 forum languages)

I think those are the ones being reported on the Community. There are certainly more things being worked on: some admin functionality, some fixes to translations and terms, and performance improvements. But I think this covers the major issues. If there is a critical issue that you think should be included, and you don't see it listed, please reply with that information. A list of steps to reproduce, along with screenshots are always helpful. So is the OS and browser, along with versions. Thanks!

Tony's add feature list: timestamp to user activity logs....

It's already on it .... had this confirmed by another Staffer the other day.

Oooops Must remember to read to end of list before replying ......

@ hugh: I didnt notice it, so I added. May be my memory was lazy to remember!
@ Tony,
It will be nice to add 'Quote and reply' rather than just a ' Reply ' link to each replies such that when multiple messages are posted (by different people), either the message intended to be replied is quoted automatically or a string like 'In reply to Hugh's post at *timestamp* or *post url*' is added to the reply when ' Quote and reply ' is clicked.

Nice to know things are getting better (spam too)....

Like that?

If you click Reply under the post you are replying to, then the Quote Thread button next to the smilies, you get as above.

Is that what you're after CV?

Did you guys change some codes / scripts in last 24 hours?
It seems like the hyperlink tag 'a href' need to have http:// or https:// mandatory. Else the links are automodified to something like : https://community.norton.com/en/forums/www.google.com

When not homely, I use mobile browser, hence rely on these html tags to make posts more better and appealed. (since basic tags and scripts are handy as the forum interface is limited on mobile browsers.)

Also, accepting a solution will be denoted as 'created a new Forum topic....' (with the name / title of that thread.) in the activity of user who marked / accepted it as solution.

Hi Tony:

I just checked the Activity Log in my own profile for a topic I started (Images in Moderation Since 16-Oct-2014) and Nikhil_CV seems to be correct about a connection between these "Created a new Forum Topic" entries in the Activity Log of my profile and my marking the thread as Solved.  I believe I marked the thread as Solved just prior to 11-Nov-2014 | 3:51PM, and within a day 5 new entries appeared with a status of "Created a new Forum Topic" in my Activity Log that all link back to the original post of 21-Oct-2014 | 8:09AM....four of these the "Created a new Forum Thread" links Images in Moderation Since 16-Oct-2014 seem to have appeared between 11-Nov-2014 | 8:21PM (my reply in the Trojan.Poweliks!gm - Nortons fix. Anyone tried it? thread) and 12-Nov-2014 | 10:06AM

Hi Tony:

I just realized where all those extra "Created a new Forum Topic" entries in the Activity Log of my profile likely came from.  If you read my post here in this State of the Forums thread from 12-Nov-2014 | 10:06AM you'll notice that I was using my Images in Moderation Since 16-Oct-2014 thread to test an unrelated problem in the forum and toggled the Mark as Solution / Clear Solution link a few times during the test. That means that each new "Created a new Forum Topic" entry for this thread that was created in my Activity Log just prior to 12-Nov-2014 | 10:06AM can be accounted for by each click of the Mark as Solution link.

That's further evidence to support Nikhil_CV's observation here that users will get one of theses "Created a new Forum Topic" entry in their Activity Log whenever they mark a thread as Solved.  Apologies if my previous post caused any confusion.

Tony,

Any status on the requests for improvements to forum navigation ... specifically ...

  1. Hot link to last (most current) post in each entry of the thread list page.
  2. Navigation at top of each page in the thread (identical to the nav bar currently at the bottom of each page)

Hi bjm_,

FWIW - On the rare occasion that this happens to me (using current FF) I find that clicking the page refresh (on the address bar) restores the timer to the correct display mode - and it seems to maintain properly even if I navigate away to a different forum then return to the posting later... Kind of a weird solution, but using the browser refresh works for me!

Cheers!

When we read older posts with links to the old forum platform those links no longer work.  Is there a way we can get the old links to link up with those posts on the new platform?

Would you mind sharing a few example links that we could look into?

Hi Kevin,

After a very quick search I've found this post which has a link to the old forum which doesn't work.

https://community.norton.com/t5/Other-Norton-Products/Recovering-Deleted...

More examples;

This post contains a link  -  https://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=forum_feedbac... -  but maybe that has been removed.

This post contains a link that doesn't work  -  https://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Roll-ove...

This post contains a link that doesn't work  -  https://community.norton.com/t5/Forum-Feedback/Creating-a-link-to-a-spec...

This post has this link  -  http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-360/Windows-7-Action-Center/m-p/17...

This post has this link  -  http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Norton-Sa...

You get the idea.  Basically any url with the /t5/ in it worked on the old forum platform but doesn't transfer over.

Thanks,
Dave

For this issue, we implemented some new code that should make the post appear very quickly. Can you all confirm that this issue is resolved? Thanks.

13.11.2014 Thanks for testing it out. I've let the team know that it's not fixed yet.

Today I experienced: After saving my new post, it was not visible in the forum's main page.
I refreshed, still not visible, logged out and in, to no avail

Selected Forums, there my post was listed as 'Latest Post'

3 mins later I refreshed the page (NMS), now my new topic appeared. A period of 3 mins is possibly “very quickly”? 3 or 5 mins is not huge problem, but it can lead to double-posting.

My post is not listed in My Account (Latest Activity) until my image is approved (2 days, weekend). Is it meant to be that way?

Hi JohnDissident,

Just so we're clear on exactly what you're not seeing, can you post a screenshot of the page you're talking about? A link to the exact page is helpful. What we've seen is that assumptions are made on both sides about which pages are not updating, and we end up working harder than we need to. Thanks.

Re: State of the Forums

Hello Tony

Back to the Forum List is missing again. I have a delay of seeing a new topic. I go to another section of the Forum for a while, quite a while and then go back to where I started the thread and by that time it shows up. I have tried refreshing the page, but that doesn't help. This is with Win 7 pro 64 bit, IE 11. It happens in more than 1 section of the Forum. One of the areas is Tech Outpost. Actually, not too many places where I would start a thread any more.

KNOWN ISSUES
- Replies not appearing after posting; must logout/login again to see post

Hi Tony:

Is this issue still being investigated?  According to Kevin's post in the thread Issue with posts not appearing without logout/login it sounds like the problem was fixed (at least when users are trying to view their own posts), but the content displayed in the forum is completely different for me depending on whether I'm logged in or logged out of the forum. I'd estimate that the last five or six hours of activity in the forum disappears when I log out of the forum.

Here's what the landing page for the NIS/N360/NAV board looked like today after I logged in around 12:30 PM local time (Central Daylight Time):

...and here's what I saw a few seconds later when I clicked the Log Out link:

Note that the displayed time of every post is also offset by two hours when I log out.  For example, the announcement Product Update - 21.7 of Norton Antivirus, Norton Internet Security & Norton 360 pinned at the top of the board always has a timestamp of 17-Mar-2015 | 7:13PM when I'm logged in, and 17-Mar-2015 | 5:13PM when I'm logged out.  I assume this has something to do with the two-hour time difference between my location in Winnipeg, MB (CDT) and Mountain View, CA (PDT).  The time zone in my forum account is set to America/Winnipeg (-0500 GMT).

Re: State of the Forums

Hi Imacri,

When you're authenticated, you pull data directly from our origin servers.

When you're not authenticated, you pull data from the caching server that can respond fastest to your request (usually the server that is closest to you geographically).

We do this for two reasons:

  1. To reduce the load on the origins so authenticated users can post and interact without delay.
  2. To serve pages as fast as possible to users wherever they are in the world.

The tradeoff to using caching technology is sometimes the cached pages are not as "fresh" as pages that are served from the origin servers. We do automatically purge the cached pages to keep them as fresh as possible -- without degrading performance.

Hope this explanation helps.

Hi Kevin:

Thanks for the prompt response and detailed explanation.

From my end, it looks like cached pages are only being updated every six hours or so.  It would be great if you could eventually increase the frequency of the purges.  I often drop in to the forum just in case someone has posted a new question that has been sitting for several hours without a reply, and it would be nice to see (relatively) up-to-date information without having to log in first.  Six hours seems like an unusually long time between refreshes.

I don't know how the Norton Servers would react but maybe a CTRL + F5 forced refresh would work -- worth trying. It doesn't take long and I often do it when catching up with backlog ....

Hi huwyngr:

A refresh has no effect if I'm logged out of the forum, except to reset my cursor to the top of the page.  If I understand Kevin's explanation <here>, I'll always be pulling outdated information off the caching server as long as I'm logged out of my account.
