Are N360/NIS/NAV Being Auto-Upgraded to NS v22.5.0.124?

I might have misread the recent edit to the product update announcement Norton Product Update 22.5 for Windows 10 Compatibility, but it appears to imply that all N360, NIS and NAV v20.x and v21.x users will be automatically updated to Norton Security v22.5.0.124.

"We are pleased to announce that a Windows 10 compatibility update is now available for Norton Products, updating the version to 22.5.0.124. The following products and versions will receive the Norton 22.5 update:

Norton Security v22
Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiVirus & Norton 360 v21
Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiVirus & Norton 360 v20

This update is available via LiveUpdate, and will be automatically downloaded and installed. If you wish to receive the update immediately, simply run LiveUpdate manually."

I am an iTunes user, and have no intention of upgrading to Norton Security until Norton has fixed the bug discussed in kenlyndon's thread Norton Security and iTunes. This bug prevents NS users from synching and/or ejecting their iPod.  Norton has known about this bug since January 2015 and still hasn't released a patch.

I've disabled my Automatic LiveUpdates, but would someone from Symantec please clarify ASAP if I've interpreted this announcement incorrectly.

Re: Are N360/NIS/NAV Being Auto-Upgraded to NS v22.5.0.124?

Hi ren:

An upgrade is now available for N360, NIS and NAV v20.x and v21.x users to N360/NIS/NAV v22.5.0.124 [i.e., you will not be upgraded to Norton Security (NS) as I originally understood].  This v22.5.0.124 upgrade is compatible with Windows 10.  There will be no changes to your current licensing agreement, so if you have a 1-Year 3-PC license, for example, that will remain unchanged for the remainder of your subscription.

N360, NIS and NAV v20.x and v21.x users wishing to upgrade now can open Norton and choose Support | New Version Check from the menu to receive the upgrade.  If you have Automatic Download of New Version enabled in your settings (for NIS, go to Settings | Computer | Update; for N360, see Scoop8's image <here>) you will receive a pop-up alert once the upgrade has been downloaded and is ready for installation (see note below).

If N360, NIS and NAV v20.x and v21.x users sign in to their Norton Account at https://manage.norton.com/ and choose Services, the Download button for their current product has been updated to download the latest version of N360/NIS/NAV v22.5.0.124 as well.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Users who have already upgraded N360/NIS/NAV v22.5.0.124 have reported that the new v22.5.0.124 engine has the same bug that NS v22 users reported several months ago that prevents some iTunes users from syncing and/or ejecting their iPods  - see kenlyndon's thread Norton Security and iTunes.  If you have Automatic Download of New Version enabled in your settings and own an iPod I would advise that you immediately disable this setting or choose the Don't show this message again option in the pop-up alert and decline the upgrade until a patch is released for this bug.

Re: Are N360/NIS/NAV Being Auto-Upgraded to NS v22.5.0.124?

Hi lmacri, you've interpreted this mostly correctly - NIS/NAV/N360 20 & 21 customers will be updated to version 22.5.0.124. These will still be NIS/NAV/N360, but updated to version 22.5. They are not being updated to Norton Security or Norton Security with Backup, and they still retain their initial licensing agreements (e.g. "install on up to 3 PCs").

As for the iTunes/iPod issue, there is much work being done behind-the-scenes to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. We understand that it is a reason some customers choose not to upgrade to Norton Security. I am sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi Tony:

Thanks for the prompt response (and feel free to ignore my PM).  I'm still not clear, though.  Will N360/NIS/NAV users be upgraded to the NS engine and all the associated functionality of NS v22.5.0.124 and simply retain their current license agreement (e.g., 1-Year, 3-PCs) and number of days remaining on their subscription?  Specifically, will the new N360/NIS/NAV v22.5.0.124 have the iTunes bug mentioned in my original post?

@bjm_, NRT supports 22.5.0.124, and NRnR doesn't yet, but will in a few days. Norton Accounts should now reflect 22.5.0.124. The roll out to NIS/NAV/N360 customers will take some time, and not everyone will get the update immediately.

@lmacri, specifically, if customers have experienced the iTunes issues with Norton Security, and are now running NIS/NAV/N360, they will likely see this issue again when updating to NIS/NAV/N360 22.5. That is, until we fix the issue.

Hi Tony:

That's not good news.  I'll re-activate my Automatic LiveUpdates, but if I have any issues synching my iPod after I receive the upgrade to NIS v22.5.0.124 I'll be uninstalling Norton and immediately moving on to another AV manufacturer.  My current laptop is not being upgraded to Windows 10 and I'd rather loose the 6 months left on my NIS subscription than have an iPod that can't be synched.

Not good news at all ... this is pretty much my last straw with Norton after years of being a loyal customer   I've recommended Norton to friends and family, but no longer.  After the ipod / itunes bug, I had to uninstall NS from a relatives computer and give them one of my unused NIS keys.  I also just recently paid a decent premium to renew my NIS subscription.  I could have paid a lot less to upgrade to NS, but I couldn't deal with that buggy software and it's itunes synching issues.  So, after allowing me to pay $$$ for another year of NIS, Norton decides to shove V22.5 down our throats anyway !!!  Horrible business practice that will cost them in loyal customers.  I thought a had a least a year of peace of mind on NIS, but it looks like I'll need to start researching AV alternatives ... I'll also have to switch my relatives systems most likely as well

.. for posting the thread.  I think this needs to be discussed and understood properly.  I'm a (very) satisfied N360 user and was planning on switching to NS eventually but am concerned about a forced major product upgrade when I can't choose the time best suited for my situation.

I'd like to check to see if I have this understood correctly.

I'm running N3360 on 3 PC's and was planning on changing over to NS in December when my current license expires.

Is this part correct? ↓

- The NS rollout will be installed via a LiveUpdate regardless of this setting in the Admin settings with N360:

bjm & PhoneMan,

Could you help with a guide to deferring the forced rollout upgrade to NS?   Your screencaps appear to be folder/file directories to me but I'm not sure if I'm looking at it right.  Is there a path that you can provide and help me out how to defer or disable the forced NS upgrade?

Are those screencaps captures of your %userprofile%\Downloads   folders?

[edit update] From reading the NIS forum's posts about this, is this rollout/upgrade applicable only to Win 10 users or perhaps those PC's that have the Win 10 Sys Tray Icon active (installed the Win 10 GWX WU's) ?

Will Norton be issuing refunds for our remaining time now that you've effectively broken your software for us? I would have uninstalled during the trial period if I knew you were going to do this.

Hi Scoop8:

My understanding is that all NAV/NIS/N360 will be upgraded to the v22.5.0.124 engine via LiveUpdate in the coming days, regardless of their Windows OS and whether they have Automatic Download of New Version disabled (although I'm not 100% certain that the Automatic Download of New Version setting will be ignored, so that might need some clarification from Tony).  That means, for all practical purposes, you will be running the same product as NS users.

The main difference between NS and NAV/NIS/N360 v22.5.0.124 will be the licensing agreement.  I assume that means that NAV/NIS/N360 v22.5.0.124 users:

  • Will see NAV/NIS/N360 (not NS) as the installed product when they click Support | Help in the main GUI
  • Will be restricted to the same license as their old NAV/NIS/N360 v20/v21 product  - e.g., 1-Year 3-PCs and installation on Windows PCs only (not the 5-device for NS / 10-device for NSBU license that can be installed on Windows, iOS or Android devices)
  • Might end up with an iPod that can't be synced until a bug fix is released for v22.x (or until they switch to AV software from another manufacturer)

EDIT:

Tony Weiss has confirmed that NAV/NIS/N360 v20/v21 users who have disabled the Automatic Download of New Version setting will still receive the upgrade to the v22.5.0.124 engine via LiveUpdate in kenlyndon's thread Norton Security and iTunes.

Re: Are N360/NIS/NAV Being Auto-Upgraded to NS v22.5.0.124?

@lmacri and others concerned: I wanted to clarify a few things and correct some mistakes.

NIS/NAV/N360 version 20 & 21 are not being updated through LiveUpdate. If you wish to get the update, visit the Norton Update Center or update through your product through About > Get Latest Version. I apologize for the confusion.

Another confusing point: the Automatic Download of New Version applies to major updates. So for customers with this setting disabled running Norton Security 22.2, they will receive the update to 22.5, as it is a minor update for that version. However, customers running NIS/NAV/N360 versions 20 & 21 would consider the update to 22.5 a major update, and this setting would be honored.

Does that clarify things a bit? Again, very sorry for the confusion. I didn't mean to worry anyone.

Tony, thank you very much for the clarification.  So if I'm understanding this correctly, the NIS/N360 folks who do not intend to upgrade to Win 10 can stick with their current version ... hopefully until the itunes/ipod issue is resolved.  We would need to manually 'Get the Latest Version' in order to upgrade when we're ready ... understanding that our current version will not be compatible with Win 10 ... which I'm fine with.

Next question ... will NIS/N360 continue to receive Norton Toolbar updates for new versions of Chrome and FireFox or will these only be supported for V22x and on?

Thanks again for clarifying.  I know I'll eventually have to upgrade to V22, but I also need to itunes/ipod bug fixed 1st, and I'm not rushing into Win 10 just yet

If you have NAV/NIS/N360 v20 or v21 and don't want to be upgraded to the Win 10 compatible v22.5.0.124 engine, be sure that you disable your Automatic Download of New Version setting (for NIS, go to Settings | Computer | Update; for N360, see Scoop8's image <here>).  If I understand Tony's comments above (and I hope I haven't misinterpreted his comments again ), the version change from NIS v21.7.0.11 to NIS v22.5.0.124, for example, is indeed considered a major upgrade and disabling this setting will prevent Automatic LiveUpdate from starting the download and offering the upgrade to the new v22.5.0.124 engine.  Until all the confusion is cleared up, I wouldn't count on avoiding Support | New Version Check as the only way to prevent the download of the upgrade.

Hi Brocktoon:

I think I should clarify the above statement.  If I remember correctly, when you have the Automatic Download of New Version setting enabled and Symantec releases a major upgrade (e.g., NIS v21 to NIS v22), the updated files will be downloaded to your hard drive and you will eventually see a pop-up asking you if you would like to upgrade.  If you decline the upgrade, you will keep your old version.  So if Automatic Download of New Version is enabled, the download is automatic but the installation only proceeds if you say "Yes" to the upgrade.  Technically speaking, this is different from an Automatic LiveUpdate where the download and installation proceed without any input from the user.  I haven't had this Automatic Download of New Version setting enabled for several years so someone will have to correct me if I'm wrong about how it works now.

I did a new test (also on a virtual machine) trying to install NAV. My account does not have a NAV license (and has never had one).

  • The installer asks me to sign in at the end of the installation.

  • After entering my account credentials, it picks up my NSWB subscription.

  • NAV is activated and working. It is still NAV (e.g. no firewall or backup). The computer is added to my Norton account under my NSWB subscription.

I think I will be checking with support soon to see if this is intended.

Re: Are N360/NIS/NAV Being Auto-Upgraded to NS v22.5.0.124?

Hi Tony_Weiss:

Another question.  Will the NAV/NIS/N360 v22.5.0.124 upgrade install on older computers that have a CPU that is not SSE2 compliant?  If I remember correctly, some Win XP SP3 users with very old computers were getting error messages when they tried to install NS v22 because their CPUs only supported the SSE instruction set.

Re: Are N360/NIS/NAV Being Auto-Upgraded to NS v22.5.0.124?

I was updated yesterday without any warning. Just a notice to reboot to complete the install. I had a current version of NAV and I'm now running 22.5.0.124.  The iTunes issue is still there - iTunes hung when I tried to eject my iPod.  I do not sync.  I had to kill it using taskmgr.

Do you know if you had the 'automatic download of new versions' turned off in the settings?  If so, this is a bit concerning as NAV/NIS/N360 are not supposed to be auto-updating to V22

I agree that's important to know, but if Automatic Download of New Version is enabled it should only download the necessary installation files and then alert you that a product update is available.  If you choose Don't show this message again in the pop-up alert you shouldn't be upgraded.  From the support article Automatic Download of New Version :

"When Automatic Download of New Version is turned on, and if an update is available, Norton Internet Security automatically downloads the update. ...If you choose to install the latest version of the product, you retain your current subscription and Norton-specific settings. The newer product version installs over your current product with the same product key.  If you do not want to get product upgrade alerts, you can turn off this option. You can also use the Don't show this message again option in the alert."

Automatic downloading was not turned off.  What did surprise me is it installed automatically versus prompt me a new version was available.

I don't remember turning off anything regarding not "Don't show this message again".  Let me see if I can find anything in my settings/config although it probably is a cookie versus a setting.  I've had NAV for several years but I usually purchase a new version every year versus update via subscription. It is possible I have turned off messages.

Hello MartaRo

I'm curious here. You are running NAV and you are now updated to 22.5.0.124. Do you now have the Smart Firewall in your Settings? Or do you still have NAV with no Fire Wall, but the rest of the features like NS?

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 10 Pro 64 bit 2004 N 360 22.20.5.39 Chrome latest version.

No Firewall.  My UI looks the same as above posted by remco8264.  Drilling down into Advanced settings under Security - I see Network > Intrusion Prevention and Email protection.  No Smart Firewall.

I am sorry if I overlooked it but I would like to know answer to the Imacri-san's question. It seems NO, looking at the above NAV upgrade case.

Brock

I totally agree w/you

I have used Norton for well over 10 years because I am not a Techie and it seemed to work well w/o users input. This latest issue that we the USERS didn't start & I'm sure plenty r like me, hav no idea what's going on.

Norton should (in plain English) tell us what their product will become and what it does.

A simple comparision chart would be nice.

I had 360 MULTI-DEVICE 25gbs b/u, now I got 360 premier and a # 22.5.0.124, whatever the heck that number means?

Norton could/should make it a lot easier for everyone to understand.

We didn't create this mess. I put all my faith in Norton and now I wonder if that was a big mistake.

As of recent I am really upset w/Norton and I hope they do the right thing.

On my 2 multi-device boxes it says , in LARGE LETTERS, "ALWAYS UP-TO-DATE" TO LATEST VERSION.

Will they keep their word? Time will tell.

Re: Are N360/NIS/NAV Being Auto-Upgraded to NS v22.5.0.124?

I've updated 2 of our 3 systems to NIS v22.5.0.124; a Dell Laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium and my wife's Dell Desktop computer with Windows 7 Home Premium & Office Home & Business. So far neither system has exhibited any problems.

However, I've held off updating my Dell Desktop computer with Windows 7 Pro & Office Professional because I use it to backup my iPad. Does anyone know if the iPod issue also causes problems with iPads?
