pc wont close after Version 22.5.0.124 Windows xp update

Last week I had to format my computer because I kept getting a blue screen on start up. I solved the problem till last night when I got an update and now when I close my pc it hangs & wont shut down. This means I have to turn it off using the ON / OFF button, but when I turn it back on I get the same blue screen which I fixed.

So where I had one problem, which I fixed I now have two caused by this new Version 22.5.0.124 for Windows xp.

Hello

Which program are you running? Does your computer meet the minimum requirements for the program? Try running live update to make sure you have received all parts of the update. It comes in several parts which requires reboots to get the rest of them. Try it in safe mode. Check the condition of the hard drive also.

Norton anti virus

laptop: acer aspire 5610

windows xp

I got a FIX NOW massage las tnight and when I did a restart I got this new "Orange colour" version of nortons. Then I got a second update but later when I tried to log off  It said, windows is saving your files, but it just hangs there and doesn't close.

I'm sure the blue screen when start up is caused by wrongly closeing down using the ON/OFF button and will resolve its self it it closes properly..

If you mean SYSTEM INFORMATION / STORAGE / it all comes up OK...

Hello

I mean check disk to see if there are any bad sectors etc.to see if the hard drive is damaged and perhaps can be repaired.

(C: Drive) right click Properties…

ACER (C:) Properties / Error checking.

Check disk options.

NO ERRORS FOUND.......

By the way when my laptop doesn’t close, the GREEN light that normally flickers, is OFF like nothings happening.

Then Last night I got another Norton’s update, but when I tried to log off the Laptops GREEN light stayed ON without flickering though it still wouldn’t shut down.

Plus after using the ON/OFF button to close down the laptop which always cause the laptop to go into a blue screen when I turn it back on. Its now just booting up as normal with no blue screen ??????

I have not updated yet to NS 22.5 version on my XP SP3 pc because of this. (still on 22.2).

@ Flo,

Could you please contact a forum admin or other Symantec employee and get some more attention to that problem??

Post also some feedback when possible, I'll wait before updating to 22.5 because hard pc shutdowns are my enemy...

If the issue is reproducible, I won't go to 22.5 version until a fix is released.

Another question is if the issue occurs when updating from 22.2 to 22.5 or if it's also present after a clean install of 22.5, which makes things even worse...

My laptop was formated where i did a clean install of notons, after a few days a red cross appeared over the taskbar nortons icon, indacating an error. It was sujested I reinstall the program to fix the problem but after searching I found people did this and the problem remained.

The other day on my taskbar beside my norton icon I had an independent icon which said FIX NOW! This installed the new vertion of nortons which has a new orange colour look and design to it.

The laptop closed after the FIX NOW ok then I added a second updated, but later after I tried to close down it stalled  plus the green light stayed out lifeless leaving me to turn it off the laptop using the ON/OFF button. This later caused blue screens when I tried to reboot while  closeing down contiued to stall just like the green light stayed out lifeless....

I got another update but still the pc stall when closeing though now I have a green light that doesnt blink & still I have to use the on off button to close, but no blue screens when rebooting...

There's no dought in my mind this is a nortons problem....

One thing I haven't done yet is a system restore. I'll wait till someone finds a sulution..

Hello

One thing that many have noticed is that it takes a few days and restarts for this update to get settled in. Then it starts to work ok.

I will see what I can do as far as this problem goes. There are several problems for those updating from the 21 versions to 22.5. There haven't been too many problems for the 22.2 to the 22.5 versions unless you are using the iTunes and iPod problem. So don't know how much of a priority this problem will have. Don't know how many xp users will be going to Windows 10. The 22.5 version has been pushed out mainly for the Windows 10 compatibility.

I understand though that not everyone is going to go to windows 10 as soon as it comes out..

EDIT: Norton has been advised of this thread.

I'm not an itunes or an ipod user,  I mostly use graphic programs, google maps and edit photos as I'm into photography.

By the way I just had another update so we'll see what happens later when I try to switch off.

Are you running service pack 3 for XP? Are you using 32 bit xp?

Hello

Don't forget to restart after getting updates, sometimes more than 1 restart is necessary. Perhaps a uninstall and reinstall of the program might be necessary. Also since on XP, you might have picked up some malware.

Just as a test (and problem locus verification,) have you tried temporarily uninstalling Norton (via Windows Control Panel - Add/Remove) to see if it restores your normal Windows shutdown?

If doing the removal does restore the normal shutdown, then perhaps you would be benefited by using the NRT ...

I'm still on 22.2 on my XP SP3 system, is the shutdown problem, when updating to 22.5 a reproducible issue at your end??

Should I wait for a fix before deciding to update to 22.5 NS or not??

I'm not sure how many people have this problem but I've had lots of up dates

and I've tried twice to send a error report using a nortons program though each time its failed to send freezing on 3%.....

Plus what if i where to unistall and reload norton's, would i just be faced with the same problem...

I have absolutely no idea if this is connected to kingofscotland's problem, but if I recall correctly, NS v22 cannot be installed on older Win XP machines if the CPU does not support the SSE2 instructions set.  I asked Tony Weiss <here> whether NAV/NIS/N360 v20 and v21 users would be able to run the  v22.5.0.124 upgrade if they have a CPU that only supports MMX and SSE but he hasn't responded to my question yet.

I don't know the exact model of your Win XP Acer Aspire 5610 or type of CPU but there are free utilities like Piriform's Speccy that will display what instruction sets your CPU supports.  I don't know if you can even install Speccy given the current state of your computer, but the builds page <here> has a download link for a portable version (currently spsetup128.zip) that you can unzip and run from a USB drive if you can't install the standard version.  Most model 5610s I could find the specs for come with a dual core CPU that supports SSE2 but you might want to confirm.

As to why it wont run that norton error  report program is anyones guess, though I'll wait and see what they say first.

I'm not sure if it's SSE2 related, but my XP CPU fully supports that.

I have NS installed on my XP SP3 laptop since last December without issues.

I hope that a newer v.22.5 bug was not introduced, but I won't update until I have a clear reply from Symantec if it's a widespread issue affecting XP systems.

Maybe it's something similar to "long shutdown and restart" problem, which affected most OS's when NS was released, but at a smaller scale.

Just had more updates but still it wont close and now I'm getting when booting up blue screens. The one I just had showed c: drive documents code with nortons info all over it claiming to be invalid and needed to be trunkated?

My pc was working perfectly fine till this update and where you'd expect hackers to mess it up the last thing you'd expect was for the anti viris programers to do it for them. THIS IS A JOKE PEOPLES!!!

Any money I need to format all over again to clean up this mess, though as soon as I install nortons, which I'm paying for. It will update with the same garbage. THIS HAS BEEN A HUGE WASTE OF MY TIME!

At leaste there should be a link to the previous vetion that doesn't install these probles people are pointing too if in fact its an older pc thing an even then nortons should have warned people. At least the new windows updates gave you a program to scan your pc to see id windows 10 was compatable..

But then again if you did this you'd probible have to refund to the tune of millions subscribers their money back if your new updates rendered their use of the program USLESS....

By the way the fix I got to repair what I thought was a minor problem lead to this newer vertion being installed to which I wasn't aware off. Other wise I would have done what most people would have done and that was. Reasearch all the forums listen to all the feedback before pressing INSTALL!!

The most scary thing is that nobody from Symantec replies here.

It leads me to believe that something might be wrong with NS v.22.5 & XP systems.

Also, not a single user using XP has reported, so far, that 22.5 version installed fine on an XP system...

Still waiting for an official reply.

i have xp, ns2015, ff39, sandboxie 4.20 was working great until first ns22.5 update. now, everytime i close sandboxie i get sandboxie error-----delete sansbox default box: could not move the sandbox folder out of the way. the file/folder maybe in use by another program. close any application/window that may prevent access.  access is denied. i don't know if this info would help norton solve your problem, but hopefully it will. the win10 compatibility updates should not be issued to xp or vista machines. thanks

I upgraded NIS to version 22.5 on a WinXP SP3 desktop this morning with no problem.  Obviously, I haven't had enough run time to know if there are any issues, but it did install over-the-top of the previous version without issue.  I am remote from this machine and did the upgrade over a Team Viewer connection.

I think your problem is different, I'm not on NIS BUT NS v.22.2.

I fired up my XP pc, I haven't used it for 54 days, so no NS updates, I ran LU it downloaded and installed 13 updates, Virus defs, SONAR, etc, and also one NS product update requiring NO reboot. I rebooted anyway.

Ran again, LU says it's up-to-date BUT I'm still on NS 22.2.0.31, and also NO FF39 NTB update available??? via LU, (I'm on 38.5) and no other recent NTB update.

Either Symantec removed 22.5 version for XP, or 22.5 version is not designed for XP so no update to install, or I really do not know what is going on...

OK, I used 2 more times my XP laptop, ran LU, many times, it offered the usual cycle of updates, Virus defs, IPS, Web Protection etc, BUT no newer version 22.5.0.124 and no FF 39 NTB patch.

It looks like, for whatever reason, NS 22.5.0.124 is removed from LU servers.

Also went to Update Center, it says that I have the most current?? version, I'm still on 22.2.0.31 en-us language.

I do not want for the moment to uninstall NS, then go to Norton Account and pull the latest version there, because I do not know the reason of removal of 22.5 version from LU servers.

Any ideas??

If you are on NS/NSBU 22.2.0.31, there is no update for FF 39. I just got online and saw the message from Tony Weiss. I don't know if the English version of NS/NSBU 22.5.0.124 was pulled from Live Update. The last I heard was that the foreign language updates for NS/NSBU still had to be given out. RE:  22.2 and no FF39 ... what message.  Where is message posted.  
22.5.0.124 Announcement states "update available for all languages" in two places.  
As always left to interpretation whether all languages = at all served locations and whether available means available now or ?....

Sorry, bjm, it was a message to me about no update for FF 39 if you are using NS/NSBU 22.2.. NS/NSBU was supposed to be the last group to get the foreign languages for 22.5 update. They might have received them already.

I'm having the same Windows XP Shutdown stall on my system. I was running Norton Internet Security 2013 with out problems until my subscription expired in late June 2015. I upgraded to Norton Security and my Windows XP system hangs at shutdown. I did a full system restore from a Ghost image and reinstalled Norton Security, but the problem is unresolved.

I'm running Window XP Pro with all the Service Packs and Updates.
I'm running Norton Security v22.5.0.120

Another problem caused by Norton Security is that I'm unable to run CHKDSK or Norton Disk Doctor on my C: drive with the /F or FIX option (to set the dirty bit) for a scan and fix at reboot. The programs will hang and then I'm unable to close them or run Windows Explorer and the computer will not start a Shutdown or Restart and I have to forced a shutdown with the power button or reset button.

OK, uninstalled NS v.22 2  a couple of days ago and manually wiped out every bit of NS leftovers, (registry included), then downloaded NS v22.5.0.124 via Norton Account.

For the first time, on my XP SP3 system, it took 6-7 mins to install and CPU constantly @ 100%, , during installation.

NS installed ok, I have performed at least 10 reboots and about the same amount of cold shutdowns, everything works FINE!!.

No shutdown hang problem here... keep in mind that I always had NS, not NIS upgrade to 22.5 version.

Another one here with XP SP3 that worked on previous version but with NIS 22.5.0.124 gets to "windows is shutting down" and after hard disk activity stops it doesn't shut down. Forced to use power button.

Tried explorer tools chkdsk and refused to run.

...OK, uninstalled NS v.22 2  a couple of days ago and manually wiped out every bit of NS leftovers, (registry included), then downloaded NS v22.5.0.124 via Norton Account.

For the first time, on my XP SP3 system, it took 6-7 mins to install and CPU constantly @ 100%, , during installation.

NS installed ok, I have performed at least 10 reboots and about the same amount of cold shutdowns, everything works FINE!!.

No shutdown hang problem here... keep in mind that I always had NS, not NIS upgrade to 22.5 version.

Well, I just tried the manual uninstall and reinstall procedure as you recommended. It did not fix the problem!

I first uninstalled Norton Security and Identity Safe via their Uninstall app in Control Panel. At that point it rebooted just fine! I then ran Chkdsk c: /f for a boot scan and it ran fine as well. Clearly Norton Security is the problem!

I then manually removed all remaining NIS and NS files and folders and manually scrubbed the Windows XP Registry removing all references to Norton Security, Norton Internet Security, and Norton Antivirus. I rebooted the system without any problems.

I made a new Ghost disk image and a new Reflect disk images. So I can quickly recover in case it did not work.

I rebooted a few more times just to make sure the system worked.

I then logged into my Norton.com account and downloaded Norton Security again to make sure I had the latest version, it's still at 22.5.0124. Installed it, and it asked to reboot. The system hung at shutdown again! The problem is not fixed!

How do I go about getting a refund?

I can't remeber what vertion of nortons I had before the upgrade though I'm guessing it might have been Norton Internet Security. So we may have just found out the root source to all our roblems as I still cant close my laptop without a hard shutdown.

I have the same shutting own problem after NIS V22.5.0.124 update. Also using disk checking tools "Error-Checking from disk properties hangs. Also running command prompt ChkDsk /F gives error "Cannot lock the drive" and hangs.

Looks like NIS V22.5.0.124 has a lock the disk or something.

Granted XP version is not supported by Windows but does that gives Norton's the right to not support it also?

The box says it supports Windows XP on two of it's sides.
