Does NAV 2009 use a proxy when scanning for internet threats? My understanding is NAV 2009 does not have a http scanner like some other AV'S

Yes it does. Go to the eicar test site and click on the .com file and you will see Norton kick in. The web shield isnt like any other av though. Web shields are actually over rated and are a way of making people fell like they are more safe then others. Aslong as your av detects the virus after you try to run is fine. Check out this.

Hi,
If I used Norton Antivirus 2009 alone (not the suite) with a separate firewall, would the firewall needs to intercept loopback (something like Online Armor or Comodo)?
I know several recent AVs use a proxy and send all traffic through the firewall that way (NOD32, AVIRA etc)

Yes. I would go with Online Amror or PC Tools firewall. Comodo can be overwhelming with its constant pop ups. Sending traffic via a proxy is just a way of making you feel secure. Kind of a scam. I used NOD32 and had my browser under active mode. When ever I clicked on any of the eicar tests I was greeted with a big red box saying "virus detected". At this point I was impressed. But then after doing a lot of research I realized that doing this is over rated and slows your web browsing down. Aslong as your antivirus detects it when you try to execute that's fine which is what Norton does.

I use to run a separate firewall and antivirus for along time. Then I tried KIS and that was a joke. It slowed my pc and web browsing way down. So I went back to my previous set up of Comodo and Avira Premium till NIS 2009 came out. After installing NIS 2009 I was hooked and bought it.

Thanks for the info. I plan on trialing either NAV AV or NAV security suite. They are both getting great reviews.
Are you the same Dieselman from the Wilders forums?
By the way, what's that sig you have that shows IP and ISP info?

Let me explain: You can get Norton AntiVirus (N.AV.) which, in 2008 Version and Earlier, has a Firewall, and this does not have the same things as N.I.S. - N.I.S. has more, which better-protect you - which is a Security Suite.

Norton AntiVirus 2009 also incorperates a firewall like defense mechanism. It was able to block numerous attacks on my computer, such as a malicious MS RPC Network DDE BO which was trying to access svchost.exe.
The thing I do not know is how many slipped past NAV09's firewall like defense mechanism =O

NAV 2009 does not have a firewall what so ever. NAV 2008 had worm protection which was a small inbound firewall but this option was removed in NAV 2009.

That would be Intrusion Prevention.
