Norton Security w/latest update blocks WIn-XP shutdown

I spent days on this problem to pinpoint the culprit, which is Norton Security.

Can anyboby suggest how to circumvent this?

[Problem]

On Windows-XP with latest (well, it is latest anyway) update, I installed Norton Security trial version which was downloaded in May. Initiated the update of 73.11MB of 15 items, and it completed successfully.  Windows shut down as normal at this point.  Then, I rebooted and repeated the update.  The size was 103.39MB for 5 update items.  I shut-down the PC as normal.  Reboot the PC again, wait some minutes without any operation, then initiated the shut-down.  Windows comes to the point showing "Windows is shutting down" and nothing happen after it, forever.

[Environment]

IBM Thinkpad X60, WIndows XP professional SP3, Norton Security 22.5.0.124

[Debug]

I repeated HDD format, XP installation, application installtion, driver installation, several times.  As the last time trial, I installed software/driver one by one, testing power on/off for each.  Norton was the culprit.  Uninstallation of Norton cures problem, and reinstall caurses the problem.

There are no further update now (9:00am GMT 6/28).  WIndows 7 and 8.1 works OK.  I need XP for maintenance of old programs that I wrote.

Have you, or can you try to use XP Mode on your Win 7 system to see if you have the same problem?

It could be possible that as XP is EOL, it is possible there may not have been much testing for XP compatibility. Just my opinion.

Hello

Perhaps using a trial version of Norton Security from May is the problem. Since May, there have been 2 versions that came out. The first version was pulled. Perhaps downloading the program directly rather than using an older trial would work out better.

Perhaps getting the download from your Norton account would work out better. Just an idea or suggestion.

Thanks for comments.

peterweb,    I tried it on virtual PC XP mode, but failed for other problem.  Installation was OK.  The first update (73.53MB 15 items) completed. Rebooted, and hit the NS icon on desktop in order to initiate the second update.  But NS.exe hung and some minutes later, it showed error 8506,421.  Uninstalled and reinstalled, but same result. So I gave up.  I won't chase this(8506,421) problem.

floplot,   My understanding of Norton update mechanism is that it alters program portion as well as signatures.  And, when program is changed, it forces reboot.  The first update in my experience was exactry in that manner.  So, I think your mentioned "The first version was pulled" is this update.  The version number when problem happened was 22.5.0.124, that means the original 22.2.0.31 (trial download) was wiped out.  Am wrong?  Your suggestion sounds I must purchase one?

Am a long time user of Norton products since its Norton Utility in 1980s.  The last product on my PCs, Norton AV, has expired in May.  I needed two of Norton AV 3yr/3pc packages for renewal, but they do not offer that anymore.  So, I downloaded NS to test if it fits to my need or not.

Hello

They do offer NAV to existing users. Perhaps if you contacted Customer support and explained that your NAV expired in May, but you would like to continue with NAV, perhaps they can do something for you. I think it may be worth the effort to try it. Give Customer Support a try and see. NAV is still being updated also.

Aha,  That can be a good idea.   Will do it.  Thanks anyway.

I will use other AV program for a while if Norton will not allow extension of AV only until this problem goes away.  Key point is whether they offer 6PC package for reasonable price (like thru Amazon), or not.  Thanks again.

Re: Norton Security w/latest update blocks WIn-XP shutdown

I'm having the same Windows XP Shutdown stall on my system after upgrading to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security(which worked great!).

I'm running Window XP Pro with all the Service Packs and Updates.
I'm running Norton Security v22.5.0.120

I've restored from a Ghost image and reinstalled but it still will not shut down. I have to forced a shutdown with the power button or reset button.

Another problem caused by Norton Security is that I'm unable to run CHKDSK or Norton Disk Doctor on my C: drive with the /F or FIX option (to set the dirty bit) for a scan and fix at reboot. The programs will hang and then I'm unable to close them or run Windows Explorer and the computer will not start a Shutdown or Restart and I have to forced a shutdown with the power button or reset button.

Re: Norton Security w/latest update blocks WIn-XP shutdown

Hello AlMejias

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum

Please check your version again using Help>About

version 22.5.0.120 was pulled. The current version is 22.5.0.124. If you have 120, please try running Live Update to get the next version. If you don't get it, then restart and then run Live Update again. I realize you have a problem with restarting.

Another option is to try the Norton Removal Tool and remove the 120 version. First uninstall using the Control Panel method and restart. Then run the download of NS 22.5.0.124  from your Norton Account. Run Live Update and restart when necessary. This may fix some of your other issues. Thanks.

Re: Norton Security w/latest update blocks WIn-XP shutdown

Hi,

I did as you instructed. The Live Update did not update to 22.5.0.124. I ran Live Update a few more times still no update to version ...124 from ...120. I also used the New Version Check under the Help menu and it told me that I had the latest version. So I uninstalled, went back to norton.com/setup as instructed in the box I bought and downloaded the and rand Downloader app again. That finally gave me 22.5.0.124. I installed it and rebooted, but ALL the same Problems still Persist.  Windows XP still hangs at Shutdown and Chkdsk and Norton Disk Doctor hang the system whenever I try to do a C: drive /f or Fix for a reboot scan.

It's obvious that Norton Security is somehow locking the C: drive in such a way that it causes a system hang. It may be the same locking mechanism that is not releasing Windows XP during Shutdown causing the system to hang or freeze in both cases. In both cases the computer needs a hard shutdown. A situation that requires a Chkdsk to be run on the C: drive. Norton Security is the cause! Norton needs to FIX IT ASAP or refund us so we can take our business elsewhere.

Re: Norton Security w/latest update blocks WIn-XP shutdown

Update:
1. The 22.5.2.15 still has the Windows XP Shutdown and Chkdsk hang problems. So I did the following.
I uninstalled Norton Security via the Control Panel.
I had to force a shutdown at the end of the uninstall process.
The computer rebooted and worked fine after removing Norton Security. No hangs at Windows Shutdown and now hangs at Chkdsk C: /f!
Conclusion: Norton Security is the problem. The 22.5.2.15 update did not fix the problem.

2. The CLEAR system did NOT have the Windows XP Shutdown and Chkdsk hang problems. So I did the following.
I obtained the latest version of Norton Security from www.norton.com/setup, v22.5.2.15.
I installed as per instruction
I rebooted as per instructions
After reboot the system hangs at Windows shutdown and hangs at Chkdsk C: /f.
Conclusion: Norton Security is the problem. The 22.5.2.15 update did not fix the problem.

3. The 22.5.2.15 still has the Windows XP Shutdown and Chkdsk hang problems. So I did the following.
I used the Norton Removal Tool to clean all Norton product off my Windows XP system.
I manually cleared out the files remaining files.
I manually went through the Registry to clear out Norton and Symantec references.
The clean system works fine! No hangs at Windows Shutdown and now hangs at Chkdsk C: /f!
Conclusion: Norton Security is the problem. The 22.5.2.15 update did not fix the problem.

4. The cleared CLEAR system did NOT have the Windows XP Shutdown and Chkdsk hang problems. So I did the following.
Again, I obtained the latest version of Norton Security from www.norton.com/setup, v22.5.2.15.
Again, I installed as per instruction
Again, I rebooted as per instructions
Again, after reboot the system hangs at Windows shutdown and hangs at Chkdsk C: /f.
Conclusion: Norton Security is the problem. The 22.5.2.15 update did not fix the problem.

Try clearing all Windows temp files. Then find the Windows/Prefetch folder and delete all the files in that folder. These files help Windows load programs quickly. They will be recreated when Windows is restarted.

Run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available.

Restart the computer once more. The first restarts may take a little longer as the Prefetch files are recreated.

I regularly clear all the temp folders. I will try the Windows/Prefetch folder and see.

Thanks!

Note that most utilities that clear temp and other files or empty the recycle bin may leave behind files less than a certain age so it's worth checking that all temp files are deleted and not leaving say 24 hours which might include the problem cause.

PeterWeb,

Sadly this did not work either. Norton Security v22.5.2.15 is still causing the Windows Shutdown hang and the Chkdsk hang.

Same exact issue as AlMejias.  I also went through the same troubleshooting procedures as AlMejias.  Same result, still hanging at shutdown as long as NIS is installed.  Hoping for a fix soon.

Re: Norton Security w/latest update blocks WIn-XP shutdown

Same problem on Windows XP3 latest Service Pack. Once installed Norton 360, XP does not shutdown...

Any update to solve this annoying problem? Or It's better change AV product...
