Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

Hello

I believe a recent update 22.7.0.75 is causing my windows 7 action center to tell me that Norton 360 is turned off, as well as Nortons firewall. However my Norton 360 icon has green ticks and is running, but windows is telling me its not. I've had this before a long time ago and restarting the pc fixed the problem, but after a few reboots the problem still remains. Is anyone else having this issue?

Re: Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

I have 6 up to date win 7 systems with the error after 22.7.0.75 update.  I have 1 up to date win 7 system working ok.  I have 1 up to date Win 8.1 looks ok (so far).  I have 1 win 7 and 1 win 8.1 not moved to 22.7.0.75.  I am in contact with all of these machines.  Moving to Chat.  We need a solution...

I apologize for this thread being inadvertently removed from the community for the past week. We had some technical issues that have since been resolved, and this thread is now available. I know this caused a bit of confusion, and I'm sorry.

Re: Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

I've got a similar issue but can't find a more appropriate thread to reply to.

The deployment of the new NS upgrade is really terrible. I got a popup last night that said I had to re-boot to activate my Norton Security - which was running quite well thank you. I was very suspicious because the popup did not identify itself - it was pretty generic and looked spoofed.

After running a full scan and still backing up to my external drive I then bit the bullet and rebooted.

BAD MOVE!!!

Took FOREVER to come up again and then the system did nothing except chew on the hard drive - AND my NS was no longer active. After several reboots I tried surfing to the Nortron site to re-install manually - it choked running Norton downloader and stalled on "downloading" forever.

Reboot.

Still no Norton running. I found, however Norton files that the previous session had downloaded. Tried running the executable. Stall.

Reboot.

Run again - this time it said it had found a Norton product and had to remove it. Stall forever.

Reboot. Tried again. Same except after about 5 - 10 minutes I got a popup saying that I'd been upgraded - and then it went away to show the "removing old Norton" screen again. Stalled.

Reboot. After a painfully long boot sequence, Norton FINALLY came up as a new version. Took me a while to answer all the prompts and activate (again took forever!)

This kind of installation nonsense is something I have not experienced at Norton for over a decade. It really feels like the programming staff has gotten replaced by a bunch of cheap newbies, that's how poorly and badly this install went. Did you outsource your programming recently to lower Dumkopfia? Brooklyn cheer to youse guys there. One more experience like this and I'm over to McAfee!

Sorry about your frustrating experience. Nothing like that happened to me when I had the inactive error message fixed by applying the update but I did this via manual live update knowing that the fix was available, not as the result of a message.

Could you clarify one thing: when you say "reboot" do you mean use the "Restart" function on the START button or did you ShutDown and then power up you computer again?

The latter function does not with default settings give you a completely clean restart but uses some data files saved during shutdown -- a so-called hybrid or fast restart. Norton and many other programs and functions require a clean Startup and the easiest way to achieve this is with the Restart function.

Sorry if I'm teaching my grandma to suck eggs .... <g>

Re: Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

I tried both cold shutdowns and restarts - the first time was a complete shut down. The Windows startup after that took over twice the usual time - and once the desktop came up, the hard drive made noises for what seemed an eternity.  I tried launching NS then and it never came up after several minutes.  That's when I did a restart and then tried to re-install from the Norton site - and that's when the system downloader hanged itself.

Thanks for the clarification, David.

Let's see if some of the others can help, since as I said this did not happen to me with manual LiveUpdate.

Thanks @huwyngr. We're adding back the restored posts, which is triggering email notifications for most of the people on the thread. It's a temporary hassle, but it's still a hassle, I know. Sorry again folks. We're learning some lessons here, for sure.

Re: Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

From another thread - https://community.norton.com/en/forums/after-227075-update-windows-7-act...

A new build of Norton 22.7.0.76 product update has been posted back to the Live Update servers. This patch update addresses the issue where the Windows Action Center incorrectly reports the Norton Security status. This update is available via Live Update and is being released in a phased manner. Please run Live Update until all updates are installed and then check if the issue is resolved.

Please see the Norton 22.7 Product Update Announcement Blog for more information.

No problem -- at first I thought we'd been spammed but I soon saw your explanation in the thread.

Just got another 22 ....

Keep at it!

Re: Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

The 22.7.0.76 Liveupdate patch to the .75 version has corrected the Action Center problem on 25 + Win 7 Pro machines I support.  Works for me with either User and Admin Windows account rights.

Run Liveupdate, Reboot, Check the NS / Help / About for version .76.  Run Liveupdate one or two more times just because...

May I suggest that a post from Norton telling all of us "out here in the trenches" about a Liveupdate fix in a day or three, and to just sit tight and use the disable / enable work around would go a long way.  NR&R is not helping customer satisfaction in the least bit...

I think we can mark this thread solved???

Has been a crazy couple of days.  You Norton folks and Citrix going south as well...

Thanks for restoring these thread posts.
