NS V22.7.0.76 Full Scan pounds CPU Continuously at 90%+ CPU utilization

This applies to Windows 10 x64 on my ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Extreme system with Intel Core i7 6700K CPU, 32 gbytes Rip Jaws DDR4 RAM and dual Samsung 850 Pro SSDs and also my MS Surface Pro tablet with Windows 10 x64 and internal SSD.

When performing a full or custom scan, the NS scanner pounds the CPU continuously at 90-100% CPU utilization and temperatures up to 79 C on all cores.  On these systems, the use of the system is very slow for anything else other than the NS scan.

I have done all the exercises of uninstalling NS with the removal tool, etc., and then re-installing, updating to no avail.

Based on the encouraging news following the latest NS patch release, I re-installed Norton on my ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Extreme system which is equipped with an Intel i7 6700K CPU and dual Samsung 850 Pro ssds.  A Norton full scan is no longer running at 90+% CPU utilization with excessive high temperatures.  However, the temperatures get up in the high 70 C range.  The attached .PNG shows all cores/threads running consistently at these temperatures during the scan.

Hi...

I did the following tests:

1. Run Win 10 with NS v22.7.0.76:

(PS: If I may ask, could you please check out yr programs list? Or, rid of some possibly unused items there?)

2. Scan Win 10 with Norton Security's "Full System Scan".

(CPU usage: 20.6%; RAM, 26.8 MB)

(RAM: 167.6 MB)

(CPU: 39%; RAM, 94.9 MB)

(CPU: 50.2%)

Seems that scanning those Windows files could cause high CPU usage.

Scan log attached.

Re: NS V22.7.0.76 Full Scan pounds CPU Continuously at 90%+ CPU utilization

I have removed NS V22.7.0.76 because it is causing high temperature problems on my CPU when Norton does a full scan.  I suspect the issue centers around scanning SSDs.  All my systems have only SSDs, no hard drives.  I've seen this problem with previous versions of Norton Internet Security during beta testing; however, it seemed to always be resolved prior to the public release of the product.

Re: NS V22.7.0.76 Full Scan pounds CPU Continuously at 90%+ CPU utilization

Yes we have a major bug here. Its pegging my i7 4790k @100% when scanning the ssd using full system scan. I also have a hdd but that seems to be fine when scanning. Pictures attached. Fix it Norton and the patch should be pulled NOW. For others don't run into this. Using Windows 10 64 bit.

Re: NS V22.7.0.76 Full Scan pounds CPU Continuously at 90%+ CPU utilization

Same here. Windows10 x64.

Quick scan looks ok but the Full Scan and any of the Custom disk scans (Disk, Folder) it pegs in the 90% range.

My C: drive is an SSD and I have two spinners. Scanning any drive pegs my CPU.

Re: NS V22.7.0.76 Full Scan pounds CPU Continuously at 90%+ CPU utilization

I have this problem when Norton ISN'T scanning anything.

After the scan I noticed that my CPU was rather high for idle (40-50%) so I shut down my computer.  Big mistake.  When I turned my computer back on the CPU went up to 99% when it was doing nothing.

When I restarted my computer it's down to a more reasonable 5-10% when idling.

Confirmed on my system. Dell XPS 8700/ Win 7 Ultimate. i7-4790, 16gb ram. 1gb SSD

version 22.7.0.76 (had to look in add/remove programs for the version because NIS no longer tells you what version is installed - WTF?) pegged all 8 cores at 100% I'd show you but these forums don't even allow pictures to be uploaded (WTF?)

I also just realized NIS no longer monitors it's CPU impact and records its load history as it once did so helpfully (WTF?)

NIS has changed substantially since I stopped actively beta testing it a few years ago. I never thought I'd see it peg and burn a  modern i7. I now have to check every machine for this condition. My confidence in Syamntec just went to zero.

You can't even upload a picture to these forums! Really? What is this, 1995?

Same thing happening to me.  Win10 64 bit.  Norton is using up every available CPU cycle even without an active scan running, topping 75%.  This is not only bad code, it's going to damage my hardware if it keeps burning this hot.  And of course my computer can't handle anything else while this nonsense is going on.  I'm fully patched and up to date.

Also, I have no idea why it is running as a 32 bit process on a 64 bit OS.

Current wait time on Chat support is over an hour.  Looks like I'm buying and installing a new AV tonight.

I think they screwed the pooch on this new 22.7 release. They should for made it v23 so we could have waited a while before upgrading.

Re: NS V22.7.0.76 Full Scan pounds CPU Continuously at 90%+ CPU utilization

Just looking at full scan in more detail I see that it starts out with Norton at 35-37% CPU while it shows "Checking For : "  (things such as Infostealer.Snifula.B etc.)

Immediately the scan goes to C:\Program Files(x86) then I see Norton using 93-97% CPU (and total CPU at 99%-100%)

Surely that can't be good to have CPU pegged at 100% for a long period ??

Re: NS V22.7.0.76 Full Scan pounds CPU Continuously at 90%+ CPU utilization

I have nothing to compare against and I received the latest patch 3-4 hours ago for 22.7.0.76.  Specs: Windows 8.1 Home, i7 processor, 8 GB RAM, and 500GB Samsung SSD.  Started a full scan.  Writing this in real time.  CPU% went to 20% initially with Outlook 2010, Firefox (47.0.1), and Excel 2010 open as well.  After a minute CPU% shot up to 70% and continues pulsing between 66-82%.  Closed Excel and no change.  Closed Outlook and no change.  Did not close Firefox as using it now to write this.  In Task Manager, the Disk pulses from 74-99%, but mostly remains at 95-99% and turns red when it hits 99%.  Memory showing 47-52%.  Still running for about 20 min. now and CPU% the same, Memory% the same, Disk% dropped to 23% for a minute and back up to 99%.  Every task in the Disk% list near 0 MB/s.  Norton Security (32-bit) task pulsing from 25-88 MB/s.  Appears to be a task I will not be running unless I do not need the computer.

Edit added: I meant to communicate that the CPU% pulse from 66-83% was all from Norton Security.  And I did not test while the Full Scan was running whether I could have run other programs without issue or not.

See my Jul 21 post.  I just monitored a full scan.  If 70% CPU on the Norton process alone, 99-100% Disk, and 44% memory is an improvement, please let me know.  Essentially no change from my Jul 21 post.   Not complaining about the results just wanted to know if this is considered an improvement.  I was able to browse the internet and work with Outlook during the scan and did not see any performance issues.  Does Norton throttle based on CPU power and amount of RAM?  Would there be a noticeable performance hit, if any, on an older Pentium, Core Duo, or Celeron CPU with 2-4 GB RAM, and standard spinning HD technology?  I have a core i7, 8 GB RAM, Windows 8.1, and a 500 GB SSD.

what is so great about that? I am a flight simmer and I can't run my program safely

why does the earth revolve around nortons?

I probably come off as a noob but I have been using nortons on and off since the 1990's it is a good antivirus but the programmers believe that the anti virus itself should take the computer over - like we should not have anything more important than nortons running

my antivirus is running at 40 70 percent cpu useage, it hasn't done that before.  No scans are running, it is just coming up with that in task manager

despite my best efforts, it starts scanning right when I am in the middle of doing something that requires a lot of cpu - it crashes my monster computer

I click around and around in circles, turning this off and that off etc

there has to be some program that isn't as intrusive as this
