Can anyone at norton confirm the following.

Norton security is causing BSOD.

symptons:

3 different domain controlled networks with computers of various builds (windows 7 and windows 10, both pro) are all getting a worker thread impersonalization BSOD. Mulitple computers across the domains. Only commonality is i use norton security on all of them.

IS it a case of just update to 22.7 or is it because of 22.7?

Please advise , i have hundreds using this product!

Though just to verify - @James in IT & @jboland1, you both have your Norton product updated to 22.7.x, right?

Re: Norton causing BSOD

Sunil_GA,

Following up on your request regarding the SRTSPP.dat file. I don't have access to one of the three computers at this time, but I checked the other two.  Each has the file at two locations:

Computer No. 1 (last BSOD about 24 hours ago) --

     ...\Norton Data\22.5.2.15\Definitions\SRTSPSettingsDefs\20160707.007  (date stamp: 7/6/2016)

     ...\Engine\22.7.0.76  (date stamp: 6/1/2016)

Computer No. 2 (last BSOD about a week ago) --

     ...\Norton Data\22.5.2.124\Definitions\SRTSPSettingsDefs\20160707.007  (date stamp: 7/6/2016)

     ...\Engine\22.7.0.76  (date stamp: 6/1/2016)

And, of course, I am always aware that a BSOD could pop up at any time.  Hope this helps.

John

Re: Norton causing BSOD

The three computers I'm working with are on 22.7.0.76 and have had Live Update run in the 90 minutes.

Now, I'm going home!

Re: Norton causing BSOD

The two computers that I have access to at the moment both have show version 22.7.0.76.  And I did manual LiveUpdates on all three just to be sure there was nothing else waiting to load.

Excellent. Please let me know if you see a Blue Screen error for them again. Thanks for keeping me up-to-date.

Is anyone else still seeing a Blue Screen, with the aforementioned files/folders updated?

Tony_Weiss if you think you have this resolved can you give exact step by step instructions on what we need to do to fix this?

Re: Norton causing BSOD

Today I've search that directory and file (the one admin updated on july 7) and found everything as described. I've done live update till the end and have no experience any BSOD since then (about 12 hours) The last days I have turn off auto-protect and all the protection from Norton Security suite, no BSOD for the last days (I know is an unsafe solution but it let me focus on my work for a couple of days) didn't surf the web, only known pages like Hotmail, Facebook and Amazon. Do you know if Norton has fix it? Don't want to keep Norton features off anymore.

No BSOD here since the update two days ago.  Holding my breath.

Re: Norton causing BSOD

Here is my dilemma.  I replaced the first computer that blue screened because it appeared to be hardware related.  By end of day June 28 it had crashed 11 times and I couldn't expect the user to get any work done.  4 hours of overtime setting up a brand new computer.  As the 22.7 update continued to roll out to our network I was finally able to find the Microsoft post based on the Event Log and eventually this thread. Then the real fun begins.  Waiting.  VERY unhappy users.  Fortunately I only had to rebuild one email client.  And as far as I know our MIS database hasn't been corrupted.  Finally gave up on Wednesday night and started removing Norton and replacing with another product.  More overtime. Still waiting for Norton to throw us a bone.  Finally we start seeing some action here on Friday.  As much as I appreciate the involvement of Tony Weiss and the other Forum admins we haven't heard any type of explanation from Engineering.  The  product is obviously doing something on a timed basis, and if it is possible to further minimize the chances of a BSOD on our production machines we should be told.  Otherwise, it is all left up to trust, and I'm just not sure I have any left.  How do I justify continuing to spend hundreds of dollars more if Norton isn't fixed?

Re: Norton causing BSOD

Tony, This is great news. However, I'm not sanguine about deploying this "fix?" until the whole procedure is published by Norton. That is:

1) Do we just deploy manual updates until there are no further ones available?

2) What files, if any, need to be deleted?

3) What about the solution posted by "ciscopursuit" in the windows/system32 tree?

Can we have a definitive solution please?

A very sincere thanks to all who have contributed to the solution. This forum is one of the best.

I just wish Norton/Symantec could stand up to their responsibilities better than they have shown during this crisis of confidence.

Re: Norton causing BSOD

1) I recommend first checking if you have the aforementioned files and folders present. By now, a vast majority of people should have received these automatically, and definitely if you've run LiveUpdate manually. 2) no files need to be deleted. I cannot emphasize more emphatically: do not delete Norton product files. 3) the one from over a year ago? I'm relatively certain that it's unrelated. Are you still seeing the BSOD?

Hi, I reinstalled yesterday Norton Security on my Lenovo T430, W10 Pro, fresh OS install.

A lot of updates and hotfixes installations after reinstalling, and I haven't had any BSOD crash since the reinstallation.

I hope the problem is solved! best regards, Juan

Re: Norton causing BSOD

No BSOD's yet on the remaining two production Norton desktops on 22.7.0.76.  I am updating some "offline" computers from older Norton versions and the folder inside C:\Program Files (x86)\[Norton_Product_Name]\NortonData\[v22.x Product]\Definitions\SDSDefs\ is today's date so "or newer" should be added to ADMIN UPDATE note above.

Re: Norton causing BSOD

The update that was sent out on Friday (details here) should address most of the blue screen errors seen by customers. So far, we haven't received any forum reports of the blue screen errors. That said, if someone is still seeing them, please let us know. Be sure the files in the above linked post are on your system before reporting it. Thanks.

Re: Norton causing BSOD

No blue screen for me either. I agree with others that Symantec should have been more transparent than what we saw on this thread.

We are talking about trust, because ours internal (users) and external costumers trust on us on a daily basis.

Re: Norton causing BSOD

Agreed. We had to make a migration to an alternative av product for several of our customers and of course they will never now go back to symantec products. The lack of official communication was really the main reason we changed as there was nothing we could tell our clients that could give them facts to make decisions on.  The the end result was only around 40 lost subscriptions to norton/symantec products. Ongoing issues for norton is that these people have now been exposed to the fact that other companies make antivirus products that work well and there are also alternatives to norton for their home pcs and their relatives pcs etc...Advice to symantec is to be more transparent! We are still pretty bitter about the large amount of non chargeable labour expended on this issue.

Re: Norton causing BSOD

Most of the pcs are back to normal. However there is one that freezes up. While using a certain program. All files are present. Hopefully Norton calls me back sooner than 3 days.

@marktheshark - could should share that program name and version with us? And is there something specific you do with that program that makes the system freeze up? And you're saying it's Norton Security 22.7.0.76 that is involved in the freeze? And is this actually a Blue Screen error, or something different than previously occurring?

Re: Norton causing BSOD

seems like things are back to normal. Its been a couple days no BSOD's. The one machine that I had freezing was due to drivers hanging up. I don't believe it had anything to do with Norton. But I cant be sure. In a few days I will run live update till no more are available and we'll see. I will post more progress as we go.

As a "reward" for participating in this fiasco the Norton 360 1 year subscription renewal I have to maintain for one of our vendor's application requirements went up from $39.99 last year to $99.99 this year. Thank you Norton.

Re: Norton causing BSOD

Hello

I'm afraid that this is Marketing's attempt to get you to try using the newer Norton Security Premium if you use the Backup feature. Program is good for up to 10 devices including Computers, Macs , Tablets, Mobile Devices and has the same Backup program as N360. If you want to try out this program, then you can shop around till you find a cheaper version of the program. If you don't need it for 10 devices or for the Backup feature, then you can get the Deluxe version which is good for up to 5 devices and has no Backup feature.

Thanks.

Re: Norton causing BSOD

I installed Norton security on my new PC today. It gave me BSOD during installation. And tried again and it did complete the installation. I rebooted the my PC. it gave me 2 times of BSOD in the rows. It eventually it fixed itself. Was the old version I downloaded in the beginning ? Am I suppose to have new version in my Norton portal. I pretty upset about it. I hope Norton will quickly find out the root cause.

Re: Norton causing BSOD

Hello Jeffrey Fu

Since it was a new computer, did it come with a pre-installed security program and did you uninstall that program with the removal tool from the other company? If it's a Windows 10 or 8.1, please turn off Fast Startup. The current version is 22.7.0.76. You can get the latest version by using this link.   www.norton.com/latestns    or   www.norton.com/latestnsbu    Please use the 2nd link if you are using Norton Security Premium version. After using one of these links, please run Live Update several times and restart as requested, then do it one more time when you are complete with all the updates.

Please let us know how you made out.

Thanks.
