Weekly Scheduled Full System Scan Running Daily

I have a Full System Scan scheduled to run weekly but it is running daily.  Why?

The weekly scheduled scan ran on Sunday and this behaviour started yesterday (Thursday my time) and continued today.

  • Windows 10 x64 1607 Build 14393.693.
  • Norton Security with Backup 22.9.0.71.

Re: Weekly Scheduled Full System Scan Running Daily

Could this be related to Windows Defender Limited Periodic Scanning?  I just remembered I enabled that yesterday and this is when the first unscheduled Full System Scan ran.

Hello Symantec?

Note: I have seen the KB about the recommendation to disable Limited Periodic Scanning but it is my machine and I will do what I want, not what Symantec want.

Hello Krusty

I assume that Early Launch Scan is a Windows 10 thing since I don't remember seeing that before?

Thanks.

Re: Weekly Scheduled Full System Scan Running Daily

Hi, Krusty. Agreeing with you that we own our machines ! not the developers !

I always have my Full Scans set to Manual, and an expert from a well known antivirus company ! told me that if you run a full scan after you've installed and restarted, then it's not REALLY necessary to run a full scan again on a regular basis.

I just run a full scan periodically when I'm doing nothing else, ! and leave the program's protection features to pick up the slack.

Each to their own, I guess !

Re: Weekly Scheduled Full System Scan Running Daily

Disabled (temporarily) LPS and Norton's unscheduled scans stopped so for whatever reason LPS affects Norton's schedule.  I guess I will disable the Full System Scan schedule until someone at Symantec investigates.

Re: Weekly Scheduled Full System Scan Running Daily

Well, even after disabling the Full System Scan schedule Norton still runs a Full System scan after Windows Defender scans, even though I allowed Norton to run its previously scheduled Full System Scan ONE HOUR AGO!  That means two Full System Scans ran within an hour of each other.

Norton seems to not care about my decision and the fact that it is my machine and there are other AVs that don't bitch about Windows Defender Limited Periodic Scanning being enabled.

I don't need to use Norton and I'm about to choose not to.

No surprise really that this machine runs quite well with a competitor installed, and no bitching about LPS.

Symantec, your move!

A Full System Scan in 9 minutes and 53 seconds - wish my system was that fast.

Hello Krusty

Is it possible that the Scan was still in the Task Scheduler?

Thanks.

Re: Weekly Scheduled Full System Scan Running Daily

Hello Flo,

No.  Norton had already completed its weekly scheduled scan as I've mentioned above.

Re: Weekly Scheduled Full System Scan Running Daily

One thing I've noticed is that in this latest version, that although I have the Full Scan schedule set to manual, that on reboot it's back to the periodical option.

Pertaining to above. Full Scan schedule on restart now staying set to manual, as I speak.

Re: Weekly Scheduled Full System Scan Running Daily

I think microsoft having LPS going is crazy. If you run to exhaustive reading of the files on your hard drive it can take a while, if you try to run two in parallel it can take far far longer than twice as long (and the computer will be much slower).

If I was unfortunate enough to have to run windows 10 I would totally disable windows defender and all it's drivers and services so it won't interfere with the antivirus I actually want to run. (not that this is easy to do)

(crazy LPS...)

Maybe the scan did not complete and was continuing when your computer was idle? Although for me when it completes it later it only shows one entry in the log.

Re: Weekly Scheduled Full System Scan Running Daily

I see enabling Windows Defender Limited Periodic Scanning still invokes Norton to run a Full System Scan after WD runs a Quick Scan.  Come on Symantec, this is my bloody machine and if I want a second opinion scan from Windows Defender I should not have to put up with Norton excessively scanning my machine too!  I have Norton scheduled to run a Full System Scan already  -  just stick to that schedule.

Enough is enough!

I also see that when you uninstall Norton there is a box checked to install Norton Security Scan, you have to opt out.  So Norton doesn't want WD scanning but they push to have their scanner installed if you uninstall Norton.

WD LPS manually starts a full system scan in Norton? How does that happen?

Ask Symantec.  I'm still waiting for them to comment.

You could use Procmon from Sysinternals to track process launches. If windows defender launches the command line to start a Norton full scan then blame microsoft and ask them why they are running that command.

Re: Weekly Scheduled Full System Scan Running Daily

I've been experiencing these unwanted scans (and resulting greater system resource use) only since reinstalling Norton with a new license a few weeks ago. I read this thread and understand it's nothing new. Just chiming in to say: Win 10 os (build: 15063.540) and FOR ME, regardless of the LPS setting, this new issue persists. If the issue is related to Windows Defender: I noticed that WD will maintain it's virus definition updates regardless of LPS (enabled/disabled). These WD def. updates are occuring outside of my scheduled Win 10 maintenance. This is the first time I've checked into the issue, because, as I stated above, although I'm a long time NIS user, this is a new issue for me. I will monitor the WD updates time/date and their relation to my scheduled maintenace time/date. After I understand their relationship, I'll change my scheduled maintenace settings enough to affect the NIS issue (if it is to affect it at all). If YOU (reading this) already know they aren't related, please tell me. Thanks. It looks like I'll be running manual scans until I find a solution. Be well everybody
