Norton Security Scanner 2007?

Hey

So this question related to an old computer which used to run Norton Security Scanner. I believe it was from 2007 (It was downloaded August 31 2007, so not exactly sure what version since it was uninstalled since then)

I was wondering if this was detecting viruses and malware and whatever in real time? Or was it only when you scanned it yourself? Also, whats the difference between the Norton AV and the Security Scanner at this point in time in 2007? Did the Norton AV have real time detection back then?

I realize support for the 2007 stuff is probably way over by now, but meh, figured somebody here would still know.

The Norton AV products have always had real time scanning. The Norton Security Scanner, sounds like an on demand scanner that you may have downloaded at some time.

Below area couple of links that supply info in regards to the 2007 AV - and yes 2007 NAV had real time detection, while the Security Scanner was an "on-demand scanner".

And that real time scanning includes the all the free versions of Norton AV, correct? 

I was wondering, I was looking at the program folders and I had a "Norton Security Scanner" folder and a Symantec folder further down. Its empty now, but what that have been created by the AV? Or can other Symantec products create that folder as well?

There are no free versions of Norton AV. Unless you are referring to the trial version of the full version. That does have full functionality, including the real time protection for the length of the trial.

Thanks for the reply, I forgot to ask you something..

So this Norton Security Scanner... the only place I would have downloaded this from was form Semantic, right? This isn't some weird thing that Symantec decided to bundle with other freeware or whatever or you could get "by accident" in a sense? In other words, whoever downloaded this wanted this, right?

I think you're referring to the free Norton Security Scan utility and it's still available at https://security.symantec.com/NSS/GetNSS.aspx. 

The Softpedia review for Norton Security Scan v4.0.3.43 (released August 2015) at http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Norton-Security-Scan.shtml states "Norton Security Scan  ...was almost entirely created for advertising purposes...It does not actually fix any problem besides removing suspicious cookies."  It's possible that Symantec bundles (or used to bundle) this utility with other free software programs but I don't know if that's ever been a normal business practice by Symantec.

This free utility can detect if you're infected with malware but it can't remove the infection, and it doesn't run in real time protection mode to prevent malware from getting on your system in the first place like the paid versions of Norton Security which have replaced the older NAV/NIS/N360 product lines.  You can find more information about the different versions of Norton Security at https://us.norton.com/products and 30-day trial versions of NS Deluxe and NS Premium are available at https://us.norton.com/downloads.

If you need a free malware scanner I'd suggest Malwarebytes since it will detect and remove any malware or PUPs (potentially unwanted programs) it finds on your system.  The free version doesn't come with real-time protection after the 14-day trial expires (the support article How-To: Deactivate Trial version in Malwarebytes 3 explains how to deactivate the real-time features in the trial version) but several users in this forum use the free Malwarebytes as a second-opinion on-demand scanner to occasionally scan for threats that might have been missed by their real-time Norton antivirus.

FWIW ~ IIRC ~ when user runs Remove Norton.   Norton Security Scan is offered to user....like IDSS used to be offered.

I've run the old Norton Removal Tool (nrt.exe) as well as the new Norton Remove and Reinstall tool (nrnr.exe) in Remove Only mode (Advanced | Remove Only | Remove) and I've never been offered the Norton Security Scan utility.  I don't even recall being offered the standalone version of the Norton Identity Safe (IDSS) and I've been using Norton since 2009.  If I uninstall Norton from the Control Panel before running the removal tool I always choose the option to "Please remove all user data" so I don't know if that makes a difference.

I also don't recall ever downloading free third-party software like the Adobe Flash Player, etc. that came bundled with the Norton Security Scan utility,  but I normally download installers from the original manufacturer's site where bundling is less common.

I also see that when you uninstall Norton there is a box checked to install Norton Security Scan, you have to opt out.

I've never seen that... I've also never uninstalled while connected to the internet, maybe that's it?
