Can't unblock router admin page

I just bought a Motorola MB7550 modem-router combination. The IP address is 192.168.1.69. I whitelisted it in Norton but NFS still blocks it. The only way I can get to it is by turning off NFS. How can I whitelist it?

Re: Can't unblock router admin page

Hi EliezerB,

When you see the Web Activity logs at Activity -> Web in your Norton Family account, what is the exact URL(s) at that are indicated as blocked?  Is it 192.168.1.69?

Also, have you tried to unblock the category "Uncategorized" at House Rules for the child-> Web?  This should allow you to access the router. You don't need to turning off Norton Family.

Thanks

Katie

Re: Can't unblock router admin page

There is no entry logged at all in the Web Activity log for this page. When I browse to that page with Norton enabled, I get this error message:

This page isn’t working
192.168.1.69 didn’t send any data.
ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE

When Norton is disabled, it works completely. "Uncategorized" is not blocked.

Re: Can't unblock router admin page

Hi EliezerB,

I assume you don't the regular block page from Norton Family according to what you described.  Please post a screen shot of the Norton Family block page if you do get it.

Can you please send me your Norton Family account email address by private message via the forum by clicking Inbox at upper right hand corner?

Thanks

Re: Can't unblock router admin page

Right, I don't get the NFS block page; it's a Chrome error page with the error exactly as I mentioned above.

Re: Can't unblock router admin page

Any solutions to this issue yet?  I have the same problem with accessing my router from any device with Norton Family installed.  Try it from any other PC or phone and it works fine.

Re: Can't unblock router admin page

Jeffrey, not really. They had two remote sessions with me in which I reproduced the issue for them: when NFS is active, the page is blocked; when it's deactivated, I can get to it. They temporarily uninstalled Avira Antivirus Free as well as Qustodio from my computer - while leaving NFS active - and I was then able to get to the router config page. I then rolled back my computer to prior to the remote session and did the same, namely uninstalling both - and it's still blocked... So I really don't know.

Do you by any chance also have either Avira or Qustodio installed?

Re: Can't unblock router admin page

EliezerB Most router login page IP addresses are 192.168.0.1

Re: Can't unblock router admin page

I do not have either of the programs you mention installed.  I use the Norton Security for my antivirus and I still have the problem.  When I use a PC without Norton Family it works like a champ so it is caused by NF somehow.

Re: Can't unblock router admin page

Soul, actually I posted the wrong IP address in my original post. It is 192.168.0.1 as you wrote. (That's actually the IP address we've been troubleshooting this whole time.)

Jeffrey, I agree it's a NF problem. Like I said, if I leave everything in place on my computer (Qustodio and Avira) and only disable NF, I can get to the router page.

Re: Can't unblock router admin page

@EliezerB   Qustodio is a parental control program and is more than likely conflicting with Norton Family. Avira is antiviral suite noted as "Freeware", most if not all freeware always comes associated with PUP programs which can wreak havoc on devices causing them to not function properly. My recommendation is removal of BOTH programs. They are conflicting with one another as well as NF. These two programs should be removed and the system rebooted. Additionally after your reboot remove Norton family, reboot that device again. Prior to reinstallation of any new software download and run this suite. https://www.malwarebytes.com/ Have it remove whatever it finds.

Re: Can't unblock router admin page

Soul, why would you suspect malware? Avira is a known and respected program and I don't see any indications of malware.

Do you have the free version of Avira installed? If so MOST free software ALWAYS comes with 3rd party downloads you are not even aware of. PUP programs or potentially unwanted programs hide themselves as legitimate programs and will eventually degrade your system. Running malwaybytes will find and remove them and is my suggestion as such. But is your choice whether to do so. Avira is not a very respected A/V solution based on what I have read. Its also doesn't provide "real time" protection, thus unwanted programs can be allowed through based on the permissions level of your login account.

Qustodio is also a parental control program as well. Running two parental programs on top of one another causes conflicts as well. Thus the suggestion to remove it with its uninstaller. You should be using either Qustodio or Norton Family not both at the same time.

This doesn't match my experience with avira. My info may be from few years ago, and avira may not have been the most effective antivirus, but they weren't junkware laden as you are implying. Last I checked they were almost on par with AVG before avast destroyed AVG (by buying them).

Re: Can't unblock router admin page

@password_password  Actually that last link is indeed "relevant". Consumer complaints are always as such. I thank you for your opinion/insight into Avira. We all have experiences with software, some, more than others. However. Over the past 30 years as a technician more FREE software has presented issues than not. Therefore, my post was that 3rd party bundled software WILL download without ANY intervention or notification from or to the user. Almost no one ever reads the EULA provided when installing. Avira also doesn't provide a real time scanning mechanism. My suggestion for a malware scan was "relevant".

Secondarily, if you had noticed the other post content it was concerning running 2 parental software programs simultaneously. This is the same as running McAfee and Norton at the same time on a system. Issues will abound. Our goal is not to bicker about what is or isn't relevant it is whats in the best interest of the person asking for assistance.

Re: Can't unblock router admin page

EliezerB I'm following up to see if you ran Malwarebytes and whether it found anything. Also whether you decided on keeping Qustodio or Norton Family, as well as do you now have access to your router.

Re: Can't unblock router admin page

I did run Malwarebytes and after scanning 600k files no threats or anything was found. Yes, I am keeping Qustodio because that is not the cause of the problem. No, I do not have access to my router's config page from my computer as long as Norton Family is active.

Re: Can't unblock router admin page

I see. May I ask whether you removed Qustodio and used Norton Family instead to validate that NF is actually the issue? What browser and search engine do you use with your browser? Here is a list of supported browsers and operating systems for Norton Family.

Does Avira (free) include 3rd party programs? It doesn't as far as I know. Do you have any contrary info?

Avira (free) has realtime scanning, It did last time I tested it (and well before that) and it appears to now based on their website. Do you have any contrary info?

Looking at the link, not enough reviews, ~20% of the reviewers had conflicting software installed, not a great source of info, but I was unable to find a better link with reviews. Seems to be less "consumer complaints" more "sparse product reviews". Here is a recent review from pcmag https://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2474683,00.asp
