Norton cannot id the encrypted files it will not back up

Norton backup does not backup encrypted files and marks the backup as a failure (red X). I am concerned that Norton cannot identify the file that causes the failure -- it just notes that some encrypted file caused a backup failure. This is not very reassuring. Is there a failure or not? And if there is a failure, how can that be corrected? Why can't Norton backup name the files that cause the failure so that they can be specified as not to be backed up? What gives?

Norton's backup program encrypts the files. For many reasons it cannot encrypt an encrypted file. If you want to make backup copies of your encrypted files you will have to copy them to the backup folder.

Not the response you hoped for but the best I can offer at this time.

Re: Norton cannot id the encrypted files it will not back up

Dick, thanks for the explanation. My problem is that I have no encrypted files so the error leaves me with the uneasy feeling that backup may not be working properly. If it thinks I have encrypted files, why not just tell me which they are -- after all if it can't encrypt a file, it must have at least located it. I have worked with support but they have no idea and can't convince me that I have any encrypted files. They even searched my system. I'll probably try a couple more chat sessions to see if they can figure it out before I move on to some other product that's more reliable. Maybe I'll get lucky and find some other agent who can help me with this issue. Been a Norton user for years -- would hate to drop it but backups are critical for me.

Not liking the sound of this. Which backup product are you using and which operating system are you running? I will assume both are current.

Have you tried doing an uninstall / reinstall if your Norton program?

www.Norton.com/nrnr

it could be a very minor 'oops' within the program that misreads the file to be backed up

is it always the same files that cannot be backed up? are any of them in an unfamiliar format? are any of them copyrighted / protected so that they cannot be duplicated? this might cause a backup problem.

Re: Norton cannot id the encrypted files it will not back up

Dick, thanks again for your comments. The product is the latest Norton Security, the OS is Win10Pro. The files/files it can't backup cannot be located. NIS specifies backup failure and the details window listing new files being backed up leaves the culprit filename blank so I can't tell you what is causing the problem and I don't have the patience to track it down by repeating NIS backup eliminating possibilities -- thousands of files being backed up. Thanks anyway for your interest and help.

Much as I hate to suggest it, you might need to look at another product to do your backups. I have Veritas System Restore [what was Symantec System Restore] and a free copy of Reflect [recommended]

Dick, thanks for the advice. I'll be moving on from Norton.

Norton Security without the backup feature is still the best antivirus protection you can buy. Norton is working toward a more narrow focus and trying to improve on what they do best - protect.

Stay well and surf safe
