Norton Family Notification : Non-supported Microsoft Edge browser launched

Bought my son a new laptop for his birthday.  Like all computers these days it's Windows 10.  I have tried to switch off the Edge browser, or at least hide all links to it but Cortana always launches Edge.

Each time my son uses his computer I get the following alert:

"Limitations in Windows 10 prevent Norton Family from monitoring your child's activities when using Microsoft Edge."

I'm advised to tell my child to use another supported browser.  Well, windows makes it too easy for them to use unsupported Edge and besides that he knows this gets him around Norton Family so he can visit any site he chooses.  What's the point of Norton Family?

When is this going to be fixed??

Hi @Keith Morton,

Welcome to the Norton Community!

Currently, Norton Family cannot monitor activity on Microsoft Edge browser.

Please see this article for more information - Compatibility of Norton Family with Microsoft Edge browser

Sorry for the inconvenience.

That's just pointless then.  Family protection that cannot monitor which sites my son visits?  Or block them?  No good.  Also, shame you could not answer my question when it will be fixed.

Gone back to Microsoft.  Their service works.

Re: Norton Family Notification : Non-supported Microsoft Edge browser launched

According to the link you reference, Norton Family will start supporting Edge "as soon as Microsoft begins allowing browser extensions".  According to Microsoft, that happened with the Anniversary Update on August 2, 2016. It is now July 4, 2017.  Please provided more information regarding Norton's definition of "as soon as".  Especially in light of the Norton Identity Save extension being released for Edge via the Windows Store in March, so Microsoft has apparently been allowing Norton to develop Edge extension for quite some time, even if they didn't immediately on the release of the Anniversary Update.

Microsoft is still working on edge, full (proper) plugin support is still pending. Some day they will finish developing their flagship browser (which is just IE 11 with all the feature removed running as a windows store app), and it will be ready for mainstream use.

Also flying cars (and pigs) will be commonplace, also world peace. Years after that microsoft will stop tracking your activity in windows 10. Then either Apple and/or microsoft and/or Google will buy out the other two. Shortly before or after that the heat death of the universe.

Incorrect. Browser plugins have been available since Windows 10 Anniversary Update which came out in August 2016.

Windows 10 Creators Update came out in the Spring and soon we will get the Creators Fall update.

Norton Identity Safe already has an extension for MS Edge available. This is way overdue.

Note the date on my post.

Also support for fully functional plugins/addons is still fairly limited.

All: This is a Windows 10 configuration issue not NF. On the new laptop make your son's login is NOT an Administrator account. Create an account that IS an ADMIN and password it so he cannot get into or change the system settings. Follow this article to change the default browser to one OTHER than Edge on the system within BOTH accounts and reboot.

That's not the point. The product should support the new browser by this time. IE has an Edge icon right next to the new tab icon, making it extremely easy to switch browsers.

Limited extension support in edge is mostly from limited (and changing) functionality of the extension interface. It took them ages to even offer extension support at all.

Limited support should have been made available when it came out. That's why there is a developer's program. AdBlock and AdBlock+ already support Edge. There is no excuse for a lack of support a year after this functionality has been made available, even if with limited support.

As pw_pw said. Unfortunately Microsoft controls which extensions are granted usage on the Edge browser. Here is how to remove that little "Edge" tab in Internet Explorer - https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie11-iewindows_10/how-do-i-remove-the-little-open-microsoft-edge-tab/d3ff019b-caa3-42d6-986d-8b46f55a9131?auth=1

No, I mean the extension interface functionality (internally) is limited compared to IE11, firefox, and chrome. Microsoft isn't finished designing it yet (at least I hope they aren't finished). AdBlock doesn't have the same level of function in edge as it does in firefox and chrome.

Anyway...the point is that Norton took my money and is not able to ensure the service it has sold !!

The only help it gives is : "You just have to configure Windows in such a way Edge is no more the default browser"...What a very good idea !!! The kids have just to type "edge" in the Windows search bar, and Egge is open...Norton is supposed to be specialist in cybersecurity...If all the protections it offers is of the same level...hackers will have good time.

The most annoying is that if I claim to be refunded, I'm pretty sure that Norton will answer : "It was said in the contract you have agreed...Look, just here in Arial 4 : Edge is not supported".

It was the first time I gave money to Norton...it will be the last one !

Re: Norton Family Notification : Non-supported Microsoft Edge browser launched

I couldn’t agree more with these frustrated comments. I have spent the day on the phone to Norton - having to set up an administrators account on his windows laptop because Norton have discontinued the Norton Family software for my Mac - five hours on the phone eventually downloading Norton Family onto my fourteen year old sons windows machine. Ticking all the settings boxes. No adult material, tick, block adult websites, tick. three or four goes with the Norton guy on the phone: stuck in an adult website: boom! Boobs galore each time! Eventually, after he tried everything with the settings, he admits: yeah Norton doesn’t support Microsoft Edge. WHAAAT? I was speechless! What on earth is the point of software that is designed to block inappropriate material if it cannot block inappropriate material unless you use certain browsers? Beyond useless! And basically Nortons marketing this stuff with all the photos of the little kids, it’ll keep them safe, very reassuring etc, etc, knowing that here is a product THAT DOES NOT WORK. Isn’t that theft? Taking your money, making you pay hefty subscriptions for a product that they know doesn’t do THE ONE THING THAT YOU EXPECT IT TO DO? It’s fine I’ll just tell my 14 year old, by the way mate, if you could just use google chrome and stay off Microsoft Edge while you’re browsing? Lol. It would be laughable if it wasn’t scandalous that Norton is taking your money, knowing their product doesn’t work. It’s like selling a child’s car seat saying it’ll work in some collisions but not others.
