Norton Update Stuck.... Computers Now Not Working

Today (27 Jan 18) I manually updated Norton on two computers.

During the update process, both computers froze.

In both cases, I had to restart the computers as even CTRL-ALT-DLT would not function.

And then in both cases, my computers are not operating correctly after I turned them back on.  One is basically bricked... I tried to restore it to an earlier point, and that's not working.

The other is basically frozen at the start point when Windows opens.

I could be a coincidence that both my computers got stuck during the Norton update process and then both were hosed... or there could be an update problem.

Have others had this issue today?

Thanks

Re: Norton Update Stuck.... Computers Now Not Working

Ok, maybe the problem is Malwarebytes.

Both computers have Norton and MBAM.

I updated both programs... as I always do.

But MBAM apparently has an update issue today.

Uugghh..

Frank, set MBAM to not load at boot time. MBAM is an awesome suite and doesn't normally cause issues.

Re: Norton Update Stuck.... Computers Now Not Working

The Malwarebytes database update this morning caused a lot of havoc. MB has released an update that fixes the problem. Until the fix was available I had to use Task Manager to stop the MBAM service on both of our PC's. When I read in the MB Forum that the fix was available, I started the MBAM service on one of our computers and immediately performed an update and then restarted the computer. Everything was back to normal. I performed the same procedure on the second computer and it is working fine once more. This was on Windows 10.

I am not used to coming on the forum.  I did create a thread similar, but can't find it now  Yesterday, my keyboard was giving me the wrong symbols.  Then when I did a restart, I noticed the Norton updates with 'do not switch off pc'.  Then I was asked to do a disk optimization.  All seemed OK, and i sent a friend an e-mail, and left for lunch.  When I returned, my keyboard (press any key) didn't respond, and I couldn't switch pc off at the tower.  I had to cut the electricity, twice, before Windows 10 came on, and everything has been OK since.

Re: Norton Update Stuck.... Computers Now Not Working

This was a situation -- from a user's perspective -- where the fault seemed to be Norton.  On two computers when I updated MBAM, the MBAM update completed and went away.  And it was then that Norton got stuck during its update, and then the computers locked-up.  Even though I thought Norton was at fault, I'm glad I handled it pragmatically -- as ultimately it was the fault of a bad MBAM update.  One of my computers recovered.  The other I had to reset -- losing a bunch of stuff.  Uugghh.

Thank you to SoulAsylum & BuckV115 for the advice.

Re: Norton Update Stuck.... Computers Now Not Working

When I do a manual LiveUpdate, the process proceeds normally (check for updates, download updates, process updates). However, it then keeps running and running and never gets to O.K. I wonder if Microsoft's latest Windows Update of Security Rollup for NET Framework (KB4055532) could be causing this.

If you are on Windows 10 disable fast boot as well. Here is how: https://community.norton.com/en/forums/windows-881-or-10-and-fast-start-feature-0
