Norton Web Safe has real problems with Chrome 69

Browsing has become painful with Chrome 69 and latest version of Web Safe.  Delays with scrolling, delays with browser realizing links/controls have been clicked/interacted with.  On some occasions the delays are minimal but in other cases the delay is significant (to the point of me thinking the browser was locked up)

As per subject, but specifically scrolling on Facebook jitters then stops responding when the Norton Safe Web extension is enabled. When it is disabled, scrolling is fine.

Re: Norton Web Safe has real problems with Chrome 69

All: What is the entire version of Chrome Paul has? There were a lot of security additions such as removal of Flash from automatically running with the user having to grant it permission to do so. New material design UI, removal and marking of HTTP sites as unsafe. I would think this is the fault of website developers not in compliance with the Chrome changes than anything else but its always easy to blame Norton for the issue. The new password generator is also present. You may want to read this as well.

Hi @Paul D,

Thanks for reporting in Norton Community Forums. Can you please let us know if you have all Norton extensions(Norton Identity Safe/Norton Safe Web/Norton Safe Search) installed and enabled in browser?

Re: Norton Web Safe has real problems with Chrome 69

I only have Web Safe (version 2.11.0.23 - which I believe is the latest version) installed and enabled.  The full Chrome version is 69.0.3497.81

I understand that it may not be Norton's "fault" here but this is happening on literally every website that I visit.  It seems like the more links and/or controls on the page the worse the delay is in recognizing a click or interaction with a control and the worse more choppy the scrolling is.

Disabling Web Safe completely fixes the problem so, in that sense there is clearly a "bad" interaction with web pages (in general) and Web Safe and so I also don't want to just dump on web developers either as not being in compliance.

There was also a comment in the reviews of the extension (need to show all languages) from someone having the same problem and notes that Twitter and Facebook (I don't use either) are pretty much unusable at this point because of this.

Hi there

All internet protection is enabled in Norton Security, but only Norton Safe Web is installed in my Chrome browser (version 69, but issue also occurred in 68 also).

Hope this helps.

Have  you tried restarting your computer since the Chrome update?

Re: Norton Web Safe has real problems with Chrome 69

I did reboot yesterday and I'm pretty sure that it was after I upgraded Chrome.  In case I am misremembering (which is always possible) I'll try to reboot tomorrow as well if I get a chance.

I did also do a little playing with this today and it seemed like if I disabled the extension (which of course fixed the issue completely) and then enabled it again things would work fairly well for a little bit and then eventually start causing problems again.  It really seems like the longer Chrome is open/running and the extension is enabled the worse things get.

Hi all,

as of a two days ago, my Facebook feed has become almost unusable.  Jerky, freezing etc.  I did a chrome reset and then started to load extensions.  Norton Safe Web is the culprit.  Same of firefox, so I have disabled it for now until they come up with a solution

cheers

I installed the Norton Safe web browser add on to Firefox. It slowed web pages considerably. Amazon pages froze when scrolling or took forever to paint. Had to finally just disable Norton Safe web. Amazon immediately sped back up. Anybody else had this issue?

Users are reporting a similar slowdown using Chrome.  https://community.norton.com/en/forums/norton-web-safe-has-real-problems...

Have you restarted your computer after installing the update to the new Norton extension?

Re: Norton Web Safe has real problems with Chrome 69

I am running Firefox 62 (64-bit) on Windows 10 Pro (v. 1803, 64-bit) with the latest version of Norton Safe Web. No other Norton extensions are installed. Scrolling in Facebook results in repeated error messages warning that a script in the extension is causing slow-downs. Each time the warning pops up the page stops loading for several seconds. Reverting to the previous version from August 31 solves the problem. Please look into this. Thanks!

Have the same issue. I've only the new Safe Web extension (the green tick) enabled and Facebook is slow/jittery. Twitter is unusable as it takes 30 seconds to react to anything. As soon as I disable it, everything works fine.

I'm on Windows 8.1 updated fully with the latest Chrome - 69.0.3497.81. I'm not techy at all so please don't ask me any more details as I'll get the wrong

Re: Norton Web Safe has real problems with Chrome 69

Got a Firefox update today, re-enabled Safe Web. Still happening.

Looked at the help, and changed dom.max_script_run_time from 10 to 20.

Still a problem.

Re: Norton Web Safe has real problems with Chrome 69

Same problem, on W10 using Firefox. Older version saw the problem first, and today FireFox updated to 62.0 64 bit.

When in FB I used help, and it said to change CONFIG item dom.max_script_run_time to 20 from 10. Didn't help.

Norton was recently updated, to 22.15.0.8 earlier THIS month, might have caused the problem?

Re: Norton Web Safe has real problems with Chrome 69

I'm having this same issue on Firefox. Yes I did full restart on both Laptops I had the Norton Safe Web installed. I endured the slow pages for several days before finally disabling Safe Web. The results were immediate after disabling Safe Web. BTW I had started my own thread on this as I missed this one on a search. peterweb replied to my thread and gave me this thread's link. Which is good since now my thread has been given an Access denied. I cannot post or get back to it.

'Regarding Norton Security Toolbar changes for Google Chrome technology updates'

Hello All

Very sorry if I have not logged this query correctly but I am a newbie. The question I wish to ask is can I still browse safely using chrome now that there will be no support for norton toolbar? I have VPN installed and this usually blocks if I go to a website that is not genuine apart from that I do not need identity safe but I have been prompted to install norton safe web extension should I install?

Thanks in advance

Cole

Re: Norton Web Safe has real problems with Chrome 69

Starting yesterday, when using facebook on my desktop I keep getting message narrow yellow band saying that script is slowing down my firefox.  Updated to firefox 62.0 today and am still getting this message but it goes on and off and does not stay on long enough for me to read it or to click on any of the options. So far this is only happening when I am in facebook.  Any, suggestions other than disabling norton safe web. would send attachment but does not stay on long enough for me to capture the message.

Re: Norton Web Safe has real problems with Chrome 69

This describes my problem very well.  To take it further, when I start fb in Firefox, it runs well for a while, then it starts to slow down and the error messages begin briefly appearing.  Once it starts, it slows down rapidly to the point where it takes several seconds to respond to every click, and eventually becomes unusable.

Norton/Symantec is working on a fix for the Chrome extensions. They need some more time for it.

Improvements have been added, but this is not enough. Check the music.youtube.com. Scrolling works much faster if you turn off the extension. (i7 3770, 14GB, SSD, Chrome 69 x64, W10 April, Norton 22.15)

Dear developers, make the driver for http-filtering. Problems with extension occurred often over the past 8 years! - 1, 2 - Your customers are probably tired of constant notifications "add the extension to the browser...", it's all too uncomfortable. How many customers have you lost because of this? It's time to stop stepping on the rake. Make it as simple as done by ESET

Re: Norton Web Safe has real problems with Chrome 69

Maybe it's caused by the isolation feature but still e.g. openning twitter on Chr69 with 2.11.0.30 extension causes sick usage of the cpu for a moment... FB started behaving more UX friendly... still has hiccups though...

Kudos0

Re: Norton Web Safe has real problems with Chrome 69

It seems to be better for me.  There do seem to be some minor delays at times but at this point I can't unequivocally state that it is tied to Safe Web.

Re: Norton Web Safe has real problems with Chrome 69

Any plans to further improve the addon... or add a 'whitelist' feature... some pages (e.g. facebook) are still killing the CPU and notebook batteries...
