Set-up with Sonos Play 1

Hello - I have a network of 4 Sonos Play:1 speakers (no playbar, no boost, etc.).  They were wirelessly connected to a previous router with no issues; however, after installing the Norton Core, I cannot connect the speakers to the wireless service.  Are there security settings I need to change or other steps I need to take to enable these devices to connect to my Norton Core?  Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: Set-up with Sonos Play 1

Hello Tommy. First things first. Since Core comes with Core Security Plus have a look at this article for your Norton product firewall settings from Sonos. Core itself does NOT have an internal firewall that has settings which can be adjusted. The DPI settings (Deep Packet Inspection) can be adjusted, the out of the box default is "default".

Do you have an ISP device which still has its WiFi enabled that Sonos may be trying to connect to? If not, which side of the Core network are you connecting these to? The 5 GHz side is recommended for streaming bandwidth and its recommended that the passcode for the 2.4 / 5GHz networks NOT be the same. Sonos states that it prefers a 2.4 GHz wireless network in their support area. Are you creating the standard setup or boost setup for Sonos? The latter could be a part of the issue due to it creating a dedicated wireless network of its own. Does the Core app even notify you of the attempts to connect? If so have you set "Priority Device" and added them in the Core app?

From the Sonos site:

Troubleshooting help

  • Remember that in order for your Sonos product and the app to communicate during the Standard Setup process, they both need to be within range of your home's WiFi. If you're having trouble during the setup process, check to ensure the phone, tablet, or computer that is running the Sonos app is connected to your WiFi network.
  •
  • Certain network types do not support a Standard Setup. If you are attempting to set up Sonos on a network that fits one or more of the following criteria, you will need to select BOOST Setup.

    • Enterprise access points configured to require certificates or some other form of enterprise authentication. If you are using multiple access points, make sure they are all set to the same 2.4GHz wireless channel.
    • Routers that operate on only the 5GHz spectrum.
    • Guest networks or networks that use a portal page to login.
    • Networks with wireless range extenders.
  •
  • If you find yourself stuck during the in-app setup instructions, try some of the steps in our article: Wireless Connection Errors

Re: Set-up with Sonos Play 1

@tommyr How is your wireless configured on your Core?  Is it using a single SSID for both the 2.4 and 5.0 ghz spectrum?  Or did you split them into separate SSIDs?  If they are not yet split, please try splitting them and see if that resolves the issue.  But if it is already split, try changing the channel on either one (or both).  You can do that by tapping Settings -> Wireless -> (tap the SSID) -> tap Advanced Settings and change the channel from "Auto" to some other channel.

Re: Set-up with Sonos Play 1

I actually just purchased a Sonos surround setup with a Play Bar, Sub, and two One's.  I had issues during the initial setup where it'd think the speakers weren't being added however - if I joined the device, jumped over to the Core App, and added as a managed device with the QoS functionality turned on per speaker, everything seemed to work just fine.  On a side note I have the same SSID for 2.4/5ghz as well so that shouldn't be the issue.

I now have all paired without an issue.  I'd continue through setup and see if you can do the same as while the Sonos app during setup was telling me there were issues it seemed to work perfectly.  I did have to tab out of the Sonos app when it'd fail, some devices would connect on a second try as well.  Hopefully you were already able to solve your issue as well.

Having the same SSID for two network will always cause issues. On Core both networks should have separate SSID's and separate passcodes to keep devices from conflicting with connections. Sonos specifically will look for the 2.4 side during setup as noted in the previous post links directly from the Sonos site.

Re: Set-up with Sonos Play 1

Not sure why it'd always cause issues, I've had my eero's, google wifi pucks in mesh, and a Norton Core configured this way with Smart Home equipment and had no issues at all with any of the above.  I believe the Sonos gear is only Wireless B/G either way and if it only supports the 2.4ghz band it'd never know the second band existed.

Re: Set-up with Sonos Play 1

IE: Same SSID, same passcode for both, same channel broadcasting on both isn't ever ideal although some devices may not complain about it. From what I am reading about Sonos its fickle in the first place.  Why even give it more things to conflict with?
