Norton removal tool

I currently run a very old version of Norton 360 and wish to upgrade to the new version.

If I run the Norton removal tool to make sure the old 360 is completely un-installed, will it also remove Norton Ghost 15, which I have installed and want to keep, or can I specify which software I want removed, please?

Many thanks.

Re: Norton removal tool

Thanks for your interest.

I've actually just renamed the desktop shortcut to "Norton 360" but I'm not sure why I had to do this when the laptop shortcut was correct.

Anyhow, I've marked this thread as solved, even though I didn't get as far as using the removal tool.

I'm happy now, so many thanks to everyone who has replied.

Re: Norton removal tool

According to this article the tool should detect all the Norton products installed and provide a list for you to chose what to remove.

Re: Norton removal tool

Thanks for your quick reply, but nowhere on the page you've linked to does it mention a list of Norton products to choose to remove.

My understanding is that the tool will remove everything Norton, hence my caution!

Re: Norton removal tool

The tool, when ran, should show ALL products listed and allow you to select what product(s) to remove. As I read the article that was my take. Just make sure that is the case before allowing the tool to run its removal.

Re: Norton removal tool

Hi TightGit:

I haven't run the Norton Remove and Reinstall (NRnR) tool recently and I don't own Norton Ghost, but according to my September 2018 post <here> both Norton Ghost and Veritas/Symantec System Recovery (the software that replaced Norton Ghost when Norton Ghost was discontinued on 30-Apr-2013) can be damaged if the NRnR tool is run in advanced "Remove Only" mode (Advanced Options | Remove Only | Remove) - see the section labelled "I Need Help Removing Norton" at https://www.norton.com/nrnr.  The warnings in those instructions only mention that Norton Family and Norton Secure VPN can be damaged when the NRnR tool is used to remove and/or reinstall antivirus products like Norton 360.

See Pcloverxp's comment in the thread BUG-Norton Security 22.10 degrades system performance about problems they had with Symantec System Recovery after running the NRnR tool in advanced "Remove Only" mode.

If you have any concerns that the NRnR tool might damage Norton Ghost, I'd suggest uninstalling your "old" N360 from the Windows Control Panel and choose the option to "Please remove all user data" as shown below. This option will remove the old-style Norton Identity Safe / Password Manager local vault if present (a .dat file stored on the local hard drive that was last offered with Norton v19.x) as well as additional static data files (e.g., .txt, .dat, .log, etc.) like your security history logs and personalized configuration settings when N360 is uninstalled.

That's very useful information and exactly what I was afraid of.

Many thanks.

Re: Norton removal tool

Well, I took the plunge and, with fingers firmly crossed, pressed upgrade on my old 360 and have successfully updated to what I thought was the new 360, and without having to use the Norton Removal Tool.

However, even though it says I'm using the current version, it seems that I now have Internet Security and not the new 360!

Please help.

Hi TightGit:

I don't have the "new" Norton360 installed on my Win 10 machine.  Can you post a screenshot of your main Norton interface (see Andmike's instructions at https://community.norton.com/en/forums/how-post-image-forums-0), and do you have a My Norton tab on the interface that displays a window similar to Phoneman's screenshot <here> (e.g., with icons for Dark Web Monitoring and/or Norton Secure VPN)?

Re: Norton removal tool

Hi and thanks for your interest.

I've definitely got Internet Security, as the main page has the various categories displayed horizontally, rather than the 360's vertical arrangement, and there is no mention of Dark Web Monitoring or Norton VPN.

I'm also now getting pop-ups offering a free upgrade to the new 360 if I enable auto-renewal payments.

It would seem that I have mis-understood Norton's original offer to upgrade from the old 360.

It would appear that you can only go from old 360 to new 360 via Internet Security!

Re: Norton removal tool

Now this is strange!

I've taken advantage of Norton's free upgrade to the new 360 and have installed it on both desktop and laptop.

The laptop is completely ok, with a 360 shortcut icon, but the desktop short cut icon still says Norton Security, although the system tray icon says 360!

Any ideas, please?

Re: Norton removal tool

My main Norton 360 user interface just says Security. But I know it is the new 360 because when I click on the My Norton pillar at the right, it brings up the new interface showing the VPN and Dark Web Monitoring.

What do you need to do if you do not get this new interface after installing N360 Premium? (I previous had NIS Premium)

Hi StPetetMark:

What country are you located in, and can you post a screenshot of your current N360 Premium interface?  See Andmike's post How to Post an Image in the Forums for instructions.

Are you certain you used an installer for the "new" Norton 360 Premium?  To add to the confusion, there is also an "old" N360 Premium [from the same era as Norton Internet Security (NIS) but with 25 GB online backup] as well as a "new" N360 Premium with 75 GB online backup and new features like Norton Secure VPN and Norton SafeCam if you purchase outside the US - for example, see the product comparison chart for the "new" N360 (Standard/Deluxe/Premium) on their Canadian website at https://ca.norton.com/products/norton-360.  In the US the "new" N360 is bundled with the LifeLock identity theft protection service and the products on their US site at https://us.norton.com/products/norton-360 are called Norton 360 with LifeLock Select/Advantage/Ultimate Plus.

If you mean you upgraded from Norton Internet Security (NIS) or Norton Security (NS) Premium (I don't think there's a product named Norton Internet Security Premium), it might be best to contact Norton Customer Support via Live Chat at https://www.norton.com/chat.  They can access your Norton Account to check the status of your current subscription, and with your permission they should be able to start a remote access session and connect to your computer to ensure you're upgraded to the correct "new" N360 product.

Re: Norton removal tool

Thank you for your help! I had to run NRnR.exe to correct the problem.
