1) Should I be logging in to Norton before using Norton for searches?

2) N crashed a couple of times recently and I had to reinstall.Since then everything is running slow and jerky. Usage and internet is fine. Should I be worried about malware? Current on all N scans, updates and Microsoft and HP updates.

What i am noticing, as of recently, when you open N360's Security History window, it takes an excruciatingly long time to load - - at least twenty [20] seconds....

Hi cali grl:

You might want to monitor Houbein's 19-Sep-2019 thread Norton Security Crashing When Opening Settings.

What is your operating system, default browser and Norton product name and version number?  If you have a Win 10 OS let us know the Version and build number (see the How-To Geek article How to Find Out Which Build and Version of Windows 10 You Have).  Is your current Boot Time Protection (Settings | Antivirus | Automatic Protection | Boot Time Protection) set to Aggressive, Normal or Off?

If you have a Win 8.x or Win 10 computer try disabling the Windows Fast Startup power option described in peterweb's thread Windows 8/8.1 or 10 and Fast Start Feature and then re-boot your system a few times after this setting is disabled.  This Fast Startup feature (also called hybrid boot-up / hybrid shutdown) can interfere with product updates and loading of Norton services at boot-up and result in all sorts of odd glitches and unexpected behaviour on Win 8.x and Win 10 computers.  If you've disabled this power option before just confirm that it's still turned off, since Fast Startup can sometimes re-enable itself after a major Windows update.

Run a few manual LiveUpdates until no further updates are available, re-boot, and continue that cycle until you're sure you're fully patched to the latest v22.19.8.65.  If you go to Settings | Administrative Setting | Background Tasks | Configure is the Status of all your tasks Complete, or is there a disk optimization or some other background tasks temporarily paused (i.e., Status = Cancelled) and still trying to run to completion when your system goes into idle mode?

1) Should I be logging in to Norton before using Norton for searches?

How are you searching? Do you mean when you search from your browser with Google, Bing or some other search engine, or are you using the Norton Search function built in to the Norton Safe Web browser extension?
