macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

Hi,
I just reformatted my MacBook Pro for a clean Big Sur installation.
Then I added Norton Internet Security.
Now in the Control Panel Network section, there is a service called "Norton Security".
If I turn it off, NIS will complain to fix the settings and turn it on.

Problem is that I use a backup software (GoodSync) that mounts an SMB access point each evening to backup some stuff. Even though I added it to NIS config to allow it to use all local 192.168 IP addresses, it is blocked by the Norton service. I lose the SMB connection and then nothing happens. I even lose Internet access.
I have to turn it off to reset connections and then NIS starts complaining again.

I never had problem with previous macOS version and NIS installed. And that Norton Security service was not present in the network configuration section.

Any way to definitely turn this off and have NIS stop complaining about fixing it?
This just makes me work without safety nets for my backups now.

Thanks for any help

Steve J

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

Ok I can confirm that it seems to work. Eventually.
I removed Avast and reinstalled Norton Internet Security 8.6.3 on Bis Sur 11.3.1
Then I was able to copy 60Gb worth of test files to my NAS without a hitch.
FINALLY !!!

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

Hi...       (My first contribution here ...complete Network Novice)         (Norton 360,   iMac,  Big Sur,  WD EX2 Ultra SSD server)

I'm thinking my problem is similar to Steve J

Mega problems with a WD EX2 Ultra SSD on my network.   Since Big Sur upgrade I can see the WD,  Copy from it,  but if I try to write my network hangs and finds a random IP address (not 192.168....  more like a IPv4 or 6 address).  Obviously no network connection after that.  I tried all manner of IP exclusions in the Norton Firewall settings but all failed.

Same for MacBook Air and MacMini...

Reboot and back to normal.

I found unchecking 'Vulnerability Protection' in Norton settings cures everything (or removing 'Norton Security' in the Mac Network Preference panel like Steve J).   So I've disabled the Norton Firewall for now and engaged the Mac firewall...  OK now apart from those pesky Norton red reminders...

Strangely my ageing WD My Cloud server works fine... but with its age and mechanical Hard Drive I can see it failing soon..

Update soon Norton?

Hope this helps and reaffirms Norton Network protection and Big Sur have problems....

Thanks for reading...   Any help on how to reenable Norton and have the WD working would be welcome..

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

All: Run this command line in console : sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/smbfs.kext

Let us know if that corrects the issue after a system restart.

Thanks for the answer.
Unfortunately, that doesn't change anything.
I applied the command to turn the kext extension off, then started my backup over SMB (in auto-mount mode).
After about 1min I got the following window and I had to turn the Norton Security service off, and renew the DHCP lease to allow Internet access again (to answer this thread)

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

Is your network trust in Norton set to public or private? Norton firewall by default will block SMB on a public trust network.

MMhhh.. I have no idea.
Where do I check this?
In Advanced > Connection Blocking > Trusted Network (current) > Zones, I have added "any local network" to "Trust Zone (Allowed addresses)

Sorry, for a funny reasons, I didn't see your articles. It looks like when reading the followup in a mail rather than here on the website, they don't show up as an URL.
I have check my trusted local settings but don't see any kind of reference to SMB. Even if I try to add a new service. No SMB.
Well, actually I just turned off entirely the Connection Blocking, because it just blocks me for working.

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

I am having the same issue with an SMB connection to a Windows 2012 server. I can connect to the server through Finder, browse all folders on the connection and copy files from the server to my Macbook Pro, but when I try to copy files to the Network server with Norton 360 installed, it will hang and eventually disconnect me from the network. I lose internet access like the OP, and I usually end up rebooting to get back to having network access. Renewing the DHCP lease while Norton was still on was hit or miss, as to if it restored the internet connection. I usually could not restore the server connection without rebooting.

I am waiting to hear of a fix or if there is a workaround. I have had the application and connection blocking turned off at times throughout the last two weeks of trying to sort through this but I can not say positively that they were off when I tried to copy files to the server. If there are log files that can be looked at, I will provide them accordingly.

Thanks,

Dave

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

I'm having the same problem, but I can connect using SMB by turning off "Vulnerability protection".
I'm having problems just connecting by SMB, and it looks like there's no problem connecting to anything other than SMB.
It also seems to have little effect on the SMB version.
I suspect that the problem is that there is a problem with "vulnerability protection".

I got a similar issue. My MacBook Pro 15 2018 (Big Sur 11.1) will get network disconnection whenever I initiate a file copy to my Synology NAS through network share. I have to remote the Norton Security from the network interface to make it work.

Come on Norton. Where is the fix for this shambles? I have 2 Macs now upgraded to Big Sur which are constantly blocked from accessing the internet and network resources when Time Machine starts and an SMB connection to the TimeMachine drive is made. Quick enough to take subscription fees, but abysmally slow to provide bug solutions.

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

How about making 8.6.1 available for manual download - We could at least see if this solves some of the problems many of us are having.  Sort of puzzling that you announce the availability of an update but no one is able to access it...

Kudos2 Stats

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

I really don't see how you can claim not to be able to repeat the issue. I have 4 Mac's, 2 of them running Catalina and 2 running Big Sur (11.1), the only Macs affected are the ones I upgraded to Big Sur. The problem appears when they try to connect to my NAS to backup to an SMB connected TimeMachine shared drive. Disabling Norton 360 Network Monitoring Service allows my Mac to connect to the internet and network resources. You are then constantly pestered to reenable the service by Norton 360. Not impressed at all with Norton's response to this. Not impressed one little bit. Just the latest in a long line of issues with the Mac version of Norton.

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

I have exactly the same problem.

After upgrading to Big Sur I can no longer copy files to a mounted QNAP NAS Drive using ChronoSync. It will create a few files on the NAS and then goes in "timeout". Shortly after my MacBook Pro can no longer access internet and I have to reboot to recover. It's not ChronoSync as I have the same if do a simple copy from the local disk to the NAS via Finder... Worked perfectly on Catalina, and I have no issues with my MacBook Air which is still on Catalina.

If I turn "Vulnerability Protection" OFF all works fine - but that cannot be the intent...

I haven't been able to try 8.6.1 as it's not clear to me how to install.
"This build is available as a patch via LiveUpdate only. Manual LiveUpdate will NOT fetch this patch." is a bit cryptic to me...
Live Update > Check for Updates is all I see/have but that doesn't seem to fetch anything, so I guess that's the manual variant but have no idea what the other is.

Big Sur has been released for more than a month. Users are still struggling and Norton can't even give a workaround. I regret so much to have signed up the subscription with my ISP...

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

Gents, wait for it....the typical Norton lip service 2 cents from a moderator is coming....meanwhile, they don't have a clue what's actually wrong as they told me they can't replicate the issue. Absolutely pathetic. If it can't be done with a scripted answer, Norton Support are as much use as a chocolate fire guard. Once again Norton, PATHETIC!

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

It's hilarious when a level 2 support called me to follow up. They told me Big Sur is still in testing so things may be broken. Guess my call may have travelled the time machine and connected a person from the previous quarter.

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

He probably meant that NIS is still under test under Big Sur.
Anyway, overall I'm very satisfied with Norton products and I like their support.
But on this topic...

Kudos1 Stats

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

Sjordi, NIS may be still under test on Big Sur but that it what developer version of the OS are for. These issues should never, NEVER, make it to paying customers. I'd be interested to hear what OS you use Norton on. I have Windows machines running Norton and the issues have been infrequent, but on Mac......its nothing short of a shambles. I wouldn't even have this software if it was freeware.

Kudos1 Stats

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

Well I agree that this should never ever be released in such a low level of quality.
I'm a software developer myself and also use NIS under Windows without troubles.
Only on Mac Big Sur.
And yes, this should be fixed a.s.a.p. I turned it off as I need access to my NAS on a timely manner without having to go through the hassle of turning NIS off, mount the NAS, then eject it and turn NIS back ON.

It feels like walking on a line across a volcano crater without a safety net now.

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

Good evening gentlemen,
Thanks for all your comments. I have a Macbook Air with Catalina 15.10.7. Norton 360 installed and running correctly. And I was about to upgrade to Mac OS Big Sur. From what I see, I'm still staying where I am and I hope Norton matures its Big Sur software and can do the OS Update.

Kudos0

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

If you don't use SMB connections to a remote NAS and just use your Mac "as-is", you're fine to upgrade.
The problem (or should I say THAT problem) only affects accessing remote networked infrastructure like a NAS.

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

I didn't stumble across this forum post in time, but had this exact same problem, and found out if I removed Norton 360 I had no issues. A lot of blame pointed at Synology and Apple, but this is 100% a Norton problem. This is my first experience with Norton on a Mac, and it unfortunately has not been a good one. Norton is likely going to lose me as a customer when my subscription renewal comes up.

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

They're going to fix it. It's an excellent product that is not too invasive and not consuming too much resources. But if they don't fix it... then...

Kudos1 Stats

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

I have to strongly disagree. They've had ample time to ensure Norton was ready for Big Sur, and have completely failed their customers. This latest screw up, coupled with the fact that Norton is constantly asking me to approve applications which are already in the approved list, and Norton Support being completely useless, leaves me no choice but me to cancel my subscription. I advise everyone else putting up with this crap on Mac to do the same. Windows may be a different story but at the end of the day, Mac customers pay the same price for an inferior product and much worse support.

Kudos1 Stats

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

It's a joke that they claimed they could not reproduce the problem on their side. Look like they are testing the software on a single Mac with no other settings, and that's all how they test it.

The level 2 support constantly approached me on the time greatly beyond the agreed time in my previous call. And the last call 2 days ago is even more hilarious that the remote support software can't even run on my Mac. They have no solution and could only end the call prematurely.

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

Interesting. See my experience and others' here: https://community.norton.com/en/node/1922081 Long story short, when this happens, I can still access NAS drives and Internet while running Windows 10 under Fusion (which has Norton 360 for Windows running). Very frustrating that this can't be fixed on 306 for Mac. On a chat with Tech Support to see what they have to say. Glad to share log files with the moderators if helpful.

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

Forgot to add that I had the same experiene with the remote support software not being able to run on my Mac (Big Sur, MBP). Has worked in the past so perhaps its an issue with either LogMeIn and/or Big Sur compatability?

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

I have completely same issue on my MacBook Pro and NAS via SMB with Norton security on MacOS Big Sur.

It doesn't work well to copy a file to NAS with enabling Norton Security, and the system error message says that "time out occur, error code 100060".  But this works well with disabling Norton Security.

The previous big issue in Norton Security was "TimeMachine fail issue" at June last year, and it had took so much time to fix it.  I don't know how long does it take to fix this issue, but I would say that should be fix it ASAP.

Kudos1 Stats

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

I have also noticed that file transfers are now painfully slow on machines I've upgraded to Big Sur. Removing Norton fixes the issue. Since my subscription runs out in 16 days, I've cancelled my automatic renewal and will be looking for a different AV subscription. Disgusting lack of customer service from Norton, and I advise everyone with the same issue to look elsewhere for your AV needs. Don't bother replying Norton, you've had your chance to retain my custom and you blew it!

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

I have been asking Norton to fix these issues since July 2019 shortly after Norton 8.4 was released.  Unfortunately, we are now in January 2021 with version 8.6.1 and the issues still have not been resolved.

I have given up on Norton. I would like a refund for the money I spent on Norton at Amazon.  I am now using another product with the initials BD.  It is fast and trouble free.

Come on Norton get your act together!  I would prefer to support an American anti virus company.  However, you are making it near impossible.

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

An update.  Elevated to next level...supposed to call back by yesterday, however no call.  Will see if there's a call back in the coming days.

In the meantime, have delayed upgrading to Big Sur on our family's 2 other MBPs.  On my MBP, have stopped Norton's Firewall and turned on OS X firewall.  Should be okay since I'm not travelling so only using home network (where router has firewall also).

In the meantime will be looking for an alternative when our subscription ends in April...long time Norton user however this is ridiculous.

Thx @azdude for the suggestion on the alternative software suite...will look into them as well as others.

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

All: If you haven't already found and read this article, please by all means do. Please note the article says the following quoted below, which is, on Apple. Conversely, Norton, should have also taken note that Apple is indeed removing kernel extensions with Big Sur, which began with Catalina. The rest has been a downhill ride on the part of Apple and Norton combined. This pandemic just threw yet another monkey wrench into the pot as well. Just my two cents, that there is adequate and equal responsibility sharing with the Big Sur fiasco. Hoping this gets a resolution and quick for MAC customers.

In macOS Big Sur, Apple has stopped allowing certain types of kernel extensions from third-party developers. This was expected and something Apple started to warn about in Catalina. So far, this does not apply to all kernel extensions, but only to those that have already received a counterpart in Apple's new 'system extension' format. It is a safer and more stable technology for building drivers and other things that were previously run as kernel extensions.

So far, these are kernel extensions that handle antivirus, firewalls of various kinds, input devices and drivers for USB accessories. Other, less common varieties still work, such as virtual file systems. In the future, the idea is that kernel extensions will be removed altogether.

Cheers

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

SoulAsylum,

Thank you for sharing the article...very helpful and provides context for the Norton "extensions" found under Privacy settings.  Very infuriating that Tech Support at Norton hasn't received this message, that Apple is presuming its apps and processes are more safe than others, and that Norton doesn't appear to be more proactive about addressing the situation (and at the very least, communicating to Mac users).

I just spent 90 minutes with Level 2 support who uninstalled and then tried to reinstall Norton several times.  I was left with a half-baked install that I uninstalled myself and then reinstalled after our support connection ended.  So after 90 minutes I'm back to where I was:  shut off Norton's firewall and use OS X firewall.

The article does raise a question as to whether Norton's anti-virus will work.  (It appears fine, however how would one know if it's actually on and scanning emails etc.?)

Finally, for what it's worth, the tech today elevated my case to Level 3.  Expecting a call in the next 2-3 days.  Based on the article, I'm not holding out any hope.

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

Level 2 was not helping anything. I just asked them to close my ticket as I already uninstalled Norton from my all Macs

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

I decided to take the plunge and upgrade to Big Sur today, and I am regretting it… The upgrade seemed to go well, but soon I could tell there was a problem. After searching the Internet, I found this blog, and it is exactly the issue. When I had Norton 360 installed, doing pretty much anything with my NAS (WD EX4100) would cause all network connections to fail. Stopping and starting the network connections did not help – only a reboot. I tried disabling the Norton firewall, though maybe I didn't reboot after disabling it, I'm not sure now. In any case, it didn't seem to help. But after completely uninstalling Norton, my computer works fine.

This is disappointing… I was among the group of people affected by the Time Machine problem Norton had, which they finally fixed in the 8.5.10 release. I uninstalled and reinstalled Norton today, hoping that maybe that would help, but it didn't. The installation put version 8.6 on my machine. I tried several times to do a live update, but it never upgraded to 8.6.1. In any case, I'm not sure it would have helped anyway.

So this is strike two. Already my wife won't even consider using Norton on her machine due to all of the problems I have experienced, which makes the family plan I purchased quite a bit less valuable… I am back to not using it for now; and honestly, I'm not sure if I will again or not. In general I trust Norton, and trust is important when it comes to virus protection. I understand going through a rough patch, and I think clearly the development team has experienced some struggles this year. This really has to change, though. This sort of unreliability just doesn't cut it.

Here's hoping to a quick resolution to this problem.

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

Have done a bit more analysis on my situation poster here (MacBook Pro running Big Sur).

With "Vulnerability Protection" ON:

  • reading from the NAS is no problem, and all is normal.
  • writing to the NAS will create the file on the NAS but a few copied bytes in, access to the NAS will time-out, followed by a disconnect, follow by completing blocking all access to the network, including internet; only a reboot restores the MacBook to normal

With "Vulnerability Protection" OFF both read and write-access to the NAS is fine - no problem.

"Vulnerability Protection" ON with either "all computers on my network excluded" or with the IP-range of the local network excluded (both possible solutions suggested in this and other threads) give exactly the same result: all fine upon reading from the NAS and lockdown of all connections upon write to the NAS.

Still no solution - sigh.

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

It appears they are working on it.  Received a call from Norton Friday evening.  They removed previous version (8.6 build 175) of Norton installed new version (8.6.1 build 39).  That didn't work so they took logs from my MBP.  Said they they'll be in touch with 8.6.2 which he hoped would fix the problem.

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

I got the 8.6.1 39 this morning automatically installed (requiring an update) but as you pointed out, and I could notice, it doesn't fix this issue. I had to remove the filter driver to avoid heavy packetloss; Fingers crossed for the 8.6.2

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

Ditto to all the above. Upgraded to latest Norton 360 yesterday and it has made no difference. My NAS network connections crash when i try and copy or move files on the NAS. Have to remove the network monitoring, kill Norton 360, and reset my NAS connection.

This is really bad. It's been almost 2 months since this problem was first flagged.

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

I installed Big Sur yesterday and I also had network problems until I de-installed Norton 360.

@NORTON: When do you think a solution is forthcoming???

Re: macOS Big Sur Network Protection hangs traffic

Just adding wood to the fire.

I confirm that with MacOS Big Sur and Norton with Vulnerability Protection, I can't write into my NAS.

If I try all connections go down and I have to reboot the macbook pro.

Hope this is addressed soon.
