I received a notification that my email and password used on darkweb

I received a notification that my email and previous password was recently used on the darkweb. I went through and received the code, but it does not show the full password. It gives me the first 2 and last 2. Email may have been correct, but the with 4 letters it does not look like a password I would have ever used? Not knowing what the full password was, not easy to figure out. Since I use so many.

Why am I getting notification from a breach that happened several months ago?
The dark web is where stolen information, such as bank account numbers, and credit card numbers, are sold. The information sold or traded can be in the form of "lists" which can be old, and could even re-appear several months, or years following an exposure of the information. Every time the information reappears or resurfaces on the dark web, you are likely to be notified.

"Exposed" information does not necessarily mean that your account(s) have been hacked. Given that these lists may be old, it is entirely possible that your login details associated with the website/service in question are no longer current. You may have already changed a password, deactivated your account or unsubscribed from the website or service. Sometimes breached sites deactivate exposed accounts, as well, which may make it difficult to remember or identify an account as belonging to you.

A combo list is a text file containing a list of usernames/email addresses and passwords. They are assembled by cybercriminals over multiple data breaches or other security incidents, then are sold or leaked on the dark web, which means identity thieves or cybercriminals could use them to commit identity theft or other crimes.

Have same problem. but couldn't find the link on the notification to get a code for the email.

Don't recognise the password & I've checked it's not on Norton's saved passwords.

"We advise you to change the exposed username/email address and password on all sites where you might have used them."

Advice not much help if I don't know the password and the site where I am supposed to have used it. Many sites also use email address instead of a user name and I can't change my email address for the 100s of contacts I have.

Automatic (Beta) chat with notification did not understand my queries - only provided set replies so not at all helpful & a human response (which used to be so good) didn't eventuate despite a lengthy wait.

Disappointed.

The process I just went through for this email notification...

  • In the email, click on Review this activity
  • Sign into Norton Account
  • Scroll down to Dark Web Alerts
  • Click on the alert and you are prompted to get the one time verification code sent to your email
  • Copy the one time code and enter it on the page waiting for you in your Norton Account
  • Then the full available information is displayed for the notification.

One thing to note. I did this when I first got the notification email a couple of days ago. When I just tried it again to verify the steps, I was not asked for the one time code. I had direct access when I got logged into my Norton Account.

Is there a standard notification email that Norton send out?  I have tried to copy the contents of the email, but it won't let me. there's a yellow button that says 'review this activity'.  Not prepared to do this until I can be sure it is a genuine notification from Norton. It looks genuine, but I never click on links in emails. There's also a link to sign into Norton for further information.  Can I access this information whilst already being signed in?

I have exactly the same issue and Norton help is absolutely useless. I don't recognise the password at all and so no idea where the breach may have occurred. I suspect someone (system) has grabbed my email and using it for other sites and making up their own password. However, this is speculation and so this service adds no value - only more confusion and concern.

Whereas I found Norton help very useful, I followed the links provided - found that my email address had been seen on the Dark Web, but the password had not.  Nevertheless, I have changed all my passwords and thanks to Norton for alerting me.

Maybe my own fault, but I did not know that Adobe had been listed as having a weak link allowing the DW to infiltrate it.  This is how my email was breached.  Would have liked an alert to this problem much earlier.

After receiving notification about my email being seen on the dark web, i was pretty scared when I couldn't get into my laptop yesterday morning - windows wouldn't load, just a black screen and notification that my laptop wasn't being recognised by my wifi, even though my tablet was.  I couldn't get into my email account on the tablet, but later discovered that AOL was down for a period of time - which explains that.  But they are not my internet provider,  so I cannot see a connection.  Later, I managed to get into safe mode and scanned the hard drive using Norton.  I was a bit perturbed when the screen suddenly went blank - twice this happened, when normally I click 'ok' at the end of scanning, even though I'd clicked on 'stay on' .

Eventually i was able to get into the laptop using safe mode and all appeared to be well.  What I don't know, is why this problem came about - it has been a very scary weekend wondering what might happen next.

Well what happened next was that I get notification that my Norton account had ended and my computer was out of protection.  I went into my Norton account and could see that I still had 109 days left.  I noticed the special offer to upgrade for free for the rest of my current subscription. So I accepted it and my Norton account was recognised again.

Are others getting these false notifications?  It was very worrying as I was unable to activate tasks.

Do you keep this computer connected to the internet every day? If not, after about a week, your Norton will show a similar message and needs to connect with the subscription server to sync your subscription again. Clicking on Help > Subscription Status will resolve this.

Yes I do,  I'm on the internet every day.

After the problems outlined in my previous posts on here, I had a local Techie have a look through the laptop for any problems and he gave it a clean bill of health.  He had it for a couple of days, but don't know if he would have needed to go on to the internet at all, if he didn't, that may have been the reason.  In the meantime I was on my Tablet, but I don't suppose that counts?

No it would not count. It is each individual device that needs to sync with the subscription servers.
