BUG - Using "Scan Folder" to scan entire HD never finishes completely

I used "scan folder" and selected my D: drive, application drive, to scan.  The scan itself took an hour and 20 minutes to reach 100%.  It continues to scan even though it has reached 100%.  I let it scan at 100% for 2 hours and then selected "Cancel".  I then let it cancel for an hour and a half and tried to close it via Xing out.  Only way to end the scan was to use task manager and end task.

Steps:

1 Select scan folder

2.  Select hard drive to scan as the "folder"

3.  When scan hits 100% and continues indefinitely, hit Cancel

Hi Wyatt,

Can you tell me more about the D drive?

Logs would be useful.

C:\Users\<CURRENT USER>\AppData\Local\NPE\Logs

Thank you,

Jeff

D drive is a 2 TB internal drive partitioned into 2 drives, 500 GB drive X and 1.33 TB drive D.  I use the D drive for installing applications, it currently has 1.16 TB free.

Unsure about logs so sending all in Logs directory.

Occurred to me that I also should run the same scan on the other partition, X, 293 GB.  The scan again took a long time, but this time it finished.  Interestingly it found 2 files it did not like, but both were old movies (.avi) files. Soylent Green and Swiss Family Robinson????  X drive consists of storage of movies, audio books and other non applications.

I suspect the files were flagged based on prevalence.

Re: BUG - Using "Scan Folder" to scan entire HD never finishes completely

Something to keep in mind, NPE is not designed to be a full system scanner. It is designed by default to allow scanning common load points. The ability to scan a folder is intended to do just that, a folder. That being said, this was a design change from 5.3 to 6.0. 5.3 limited to a single level of depth when scanning a folder. This was not good. So we allowed full depth of folder structure in 6.0. It does expose this weakness in the underlying architecture. I think this is a reasonable trade off as NPE would often not find obvious threats if they were just 2 levels deep in a folder scan.

If you want to scan a full drive, it is much better to use the full version of Norton Security to do such work.

Hope that helps explain why NPE hung during a drive scan.

Jeff
