No More Stand Alone Password Manager! Norton 360

I just did a live update this morning. Tried to access my passwords in Password Manager. The dashboard application pushed me to a browser window for my passwords and not the stand-alone Password Manager. Chatted with Norton and they confirmed the stand-alone was eliminated during the update.
RESULT of CHANGE: If we need our passwords and we do not have internet access in the middle of a cellular dead-zone, then we do not have our passwords. This Update must be reversed.

Sture:

@bjm_ NO, I uninstalled the 22.21.10.40 version, logged on to my Norton account and reinstalled the 22.21.9.25 version ... and by PWM I mean the local Password Manager interface on my PC

Yes, I understand = you reinstalled the 22.21.9.25 version.

So if anyone has installed Norton since 2014, and have not used the work around, you do not have a local vault.

Re: No More Stand Alone Password Manager! Norton 360

HI All,

Thanks for sharing your suggestions.

If you are a existing Password Manager user with Local Vault, then you can currently access your Local Vault only from Norton Tool bar on IE browser.

However we recommend you to use Standalone Norton Password Manager extension with Cloud/Online Vault on supported browsers(Chrome/Firefox/Edge).

Please follow below Steps to migrate your Local Vault data to Standalone Norton Password Manager extension.

Step 1 - Click on "Norton Password Manager" Touch point from Norton Security Product

Step 2 - Below UI will be shown which will guide you to Export your Local Vault data in CSV format.

Post validating your Local Vault password, export your local vault data in CSV format.

Step 3 - Once you export your Local Vault data, If Chrome/Firefox/Edge is machines default browser then Install Password Manager extension on the same by clicking on "Install Password Manager Extension" button.

   > if IE is the machines default browser, then please change your default browser to any of the supported browsers (Chrome/Firefox/Edge)

Note - If Password Manager extension is already installed on the supported default browser then you can ignore this step

Step 4 - If Password Manager extension is already supported on machines default browser (Chrome/Firefox/Edge), then we will guide you to Import your exported Local Vault data (CSV file) into Standalone Norton Password Manager extension.

4.1 Click on "Import Your Passwords and Data" button from below UI

4.2 Sign in to your Norton Account from the Extension

4.3 Unlock or Setup your Cloud Vault

4.4 Import the exported CSV file of your Local Vault data to cotinue accessing your data from Norton Password Manager extension and cloud vault.

If you are a existing Online/Cloud vault user from the Norton Security Product UI then we had updated the below touch point to promote Standalone password manager extension since,

1. Microsoft has already ended support for older IE versions

2. IE11 browser is also planned to be ended soon

3. Win11 OS already does not support IE browser

4. We already have a Standalone Password Manager extension which has more features

Re: No More Stand Alone Password Manager! Norton 360

@viveksu

This DID NOT give me access to my local vault, as compared to what the extension does in IE.  When trying to access via the Norton 360 Internet Security Password Manager option all it does is try to open the cloud vault.  So, this is pretty useless for a contractor like myself.  The users need to get back this option, that allows you to open the Local Vault when using a third party network that does not give you Internet access.

Hi,

Can you please check and let us know whether you are able to access your Local Vault data from Norton tool bar on IE browser.

This is expected to work even if you are offline.

I have subscribed to Norton for several years  but never used the PM feature, but was considering activating it.  But this thread is alarming about how useful it will be to me.  Further, I am shocked that a Norton representative has not joined the conversation. Is this typical that Norton lets subscribers to fend for themselves?

@bjm... thank you for the links. They are helpful in explaining what has gone on with our product. I still wish we had access via UI like we used to have so we could access our vault (whether it was local .dat files or the cloud) through the UI without going through a web browser...but I've come to the conclusion, it is what it is, and it isn't going to be what it was ever again.

@viveksu Yes, I do have access to my local vault when using the plugin in IE. The question is and what most on this thread need, is the same ability via plugin when using Firefox, Edge or Chrome. And, when selecting Password Manager via Norton 360 products.

Curious, are you accessing a local vault (does not require internet access) when using IE plugin or a cloud vault (requires internet access)?

I mean....I can disable my network adapter (no internet access) ... open my (not Norton) password manager ... access my credentials.  To me that's a "local" vault.  Just saying.

Yes, without Internet access using the IE plugin does open the local vault.  I am not accessing the cloud vault as I am on a third party local network.

viveksu -

Your procedure you so elegantly presented above is what most of us have already discovered as a result of the Nov. 1 patch.  One of the biggest issues with continually displaying the option is users now can re-import all their passwords/logins into the cloud vault.  So, now you can have 2,3 4 or more copies of the same logins/passwords.  All this does is create a mess to the uninitiated user of PWM.

Hmm....third party local network.  Interesting, you have a Legacy local vault.
Sounds like a limited use scenario for Norton users.  IDK
So, you share Login credentials over the third party local network?

OK, that's about it.
The local password manager has been one of the main reasons to continue using Norton Security. Now that its use is finally stopped, I may as well switch to another antivirus. An absolute arrogance towards the customers. Adios Norton.

One last comment and then I think I'll get off this dead horse. Norton may as well remove the 'link' in the UI because it takes forever to get to your vault using it. It's a whole lot faster to just open your Browser and click on the "extension" from within the Browser. I still think it stinks that we can't access our vault (local or otherwise) from within the UI, but it is what it is.

Issue is the solution offered by Norton Rep is not accurate. The native PC Norton app does NOT work as described, but instead works as the first person said: Clicking on "Password Manager" under Internet Security leads one to the web page, NOT the Norton Password vault as it has for many years now.

NORTON MUST FIX THEIR LATEST UPDATE AND RETURN TO NATIVE APP ACCESS TO VAULT WITHOUT NEED FOR BROWSER ACCESS.  UNACCEPTABLE CHANGE, ESPECIALLY WITH NO WARNING FOR INABILITY TO EXPORT PW

Local vault (access from Norton UI) is/was dependent on Internet Explorer.
Some years back, I read that many third-party programs have a dependency upon some of the dynamic link libraries (DLL’s) that are delivered with Internet Explorer.  Components of Internet Explorer are used by other programs on the machine regardless of whether you use Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer is EOL.

If Norton wanted to retain legacy local off-line password manager.
Norton would have re-built Norton Password Manager years back.  $0.02

Re: No More Stand Alone Password Manager! Norton 360

I contacted Norton Support to complain about this issue. I was told by the rep that the local vault was removed for security reasons. No mentioned was made about any dependency on the Internet Explorer. In addition, the rep said that the Password Manager was not a top priority for Norton. If I wanted more options, I should look into other password managers(!). Based on this response I've started to manually re-enter all my entries into LastPass. This is a major pain in the a** , and I've been griping since. With the Last Pass you can still export and import to and from CSV files. All in all, LastPass offers me everything I could possibly want with an elegant interface. The only reason I opted for Norton's Password Manager in the first place was because it included in Norton Security and thus free. Actually, having two password managers is not a bad idea. It's kind of like having a backup, in case something unexpected and undesirable happens with one of the vendors.

I am not as tech-savvy as many of you.  So here it is:  I cannot understand why in the world a Password Manager would need to be dependent on any web browser.  Basically, it's a freakin' database that supplies information to a web browser on demand via the activation of web extensions.

I want my local Password Manager option back!!

(Note Norton Folks:  I've been a Norton subscriber since the 90s.  I already DON'T USE the paltry 100 GB Backup option available to me because it's woefully inadequate!  At minimum, I need 3 times that amount just for my computer, not counting the rest of the family.  With each passing year, I am finding that there are more features I am paying for that I DON'T need, and now, after this, fewer features that I like.  Wake up!)

FYI... I would be happy to talk to anyone at Nielsen regarding this - just let me know....

Re: No More Stand Alone Password Manager! Norton 360

HI,

I've been a Norton User since way back when it was Symantec in the late 90's early 2000s. I'm very dependent on the password manager functions and use it daily. This new change is a real problem and I'm not enjoying the experience at all. Norton 360 is becoming very expensive for the yearly subscription, and is bringing many new features that are not of interest to me. I would recommend Norton look more closely at how most people are actually using the product - and sell what we actually use and need because I think you are moving away from your core customer base with these latest changes.

Thank you,

Re: No More Stand Alone Password Manager! Norton 360

I would like to echo KMC-1's comment.

1) I am paying about $55 a year for 5TB of storage - making Norton's 100GM virtually meaningless.

2) Norton just released an Anti-Track tool, that is only for I person.  Why in the heck would they not make this service part of Norton 360?!?

3) I don't need Parental Controls.

4) Privacy Monitor - Interesting, Nice - Oh, but you then you have to pay to have the information actually removed.

I think Norton needs to tailor their subscriptions to household size.

Re: No More Stand Alone Password Manager! Norton 360

Understood.  However (and I may not have stated this clearly), I feel that something that has the potential to be as universally helpful as an AntiTrack program should be part of Norton 360 - and that way be available to multiple devices, not just one.

For example, I have no need for the Parental Controls feature - but I am essentially "paying for it" as part of Norton 360.  (This would be true for any subscriber who has no children, or whose children are grown.)

However, AntiTrack is something that could be used by just about all Norton 360 subscribers.  It has the potential to be as valuable as the VPN or even the AntiVirus program itself.  Make it part of 360.

(I also think that Norton should explore the idea of designing their subscription levels based on Household Size rather than a set number of devices - or increase the number of devices at the various levels.)

Re: No More Stand Alone Password Manager! Norton 360

The topic of the first post is about the local password manager, not the cloud-based one.  All posts explaining how to switch from Internet Explorer to another browser miss the point. I have never needed Internet Explorer to use the password manager with locally stored database. The fact is that the use of the data manager with local database was disabled without informing the users beforehand. Now you still have the possibility to export the data from the local database as CSV. Unfortunately, this worked only partially for me, not all data was exported. Fortunately I still had a not too old backup. With this I have now set up a new local data manager with KeePass 2.

Norton forces customers to store their passwords in the cloud. Norton charges customers with an automatic renewal more than double the price as on the free market. Is this how you treat your customers?

OK. Since I no longer need Norton's local data manager, I am no longer bound to the product and can now choose which program I want to use in the future. There are equivalent programs or better than Norton.
