windows 7 install failure

I had to rebuild a windows 7 system disk, all applications were lost. when i try to download and install 360, the install will not complete. It ran for 12 hours with no error messages. It seemed to be cpu only , no disk or network usage.

.... If you have not installed the KB4474419 update (rel. 23-Sep-2019) that adds support for SHA-2 code signing of digital certificates to Win 7 SP1 then Norton products newer than v22.21.3  will not run correctly.  See Norton employee Gayathri_R's 16-Apr-2021 announcement SHA 2 Code Signing Support for Windows 7  for more information....

Hi anotherws:

Further to my previous post, there are several other software programs that will no longer run on Win 7 SP1 machines unless SHA-2 code signing support is installed, including the latest version of Malwarebytes Free. Malwarebytes employee AdvancedSetup posted two sets of instructions in the Malwarebytes forum in May/June of 2021 that might be of interest to you, even if it doesn't help with your Norton installation.

The first is How to Update Windows 7 to the Latest Security Updates and is dated 19-May-2021.  This post includes a full set of instructions for patching a clean reinstall of Win 7 back to end of support on 14-Jan-2020.

AdvancedSetup posted a second set of "abbreviated" instructions in murph's thread Now MBAM Wants a Microsoft Security Update  on 05-Jun-2021 that is intended for Win 7 SP1 users who already have most of the Windows security updates released prior to end of support on 14-Jan-2020.  These newer instructions include download links for both KB4490628 (Servicing Stack Update for Win 7 SP1, rel. 12-Mar-2019) and the KB4474419 (SHA-2 Code Signing Support for Windows 7, rel. 23-Sep-2019 that I suggested <above>), which are the same two updates recommended in the MS support article 2019 SHA-2 Code Signing Support Requirement for Windows and WSUS that Microsoft says are required before Win 7 SP1 can install any Windows Updates released on or after July 2019Note that most Win 7 SP1 users who are not fully patched to end of support on 14-Jan-2020 find that KB4474419 is the only update that must be installed before they can run installers for newer software like Norton and Malwarebytes that are signed exclusively with SHA-2 digital certificates, but if KB4474419 doesn't solve your Norton installation problem then try installing KB4490628 as well.

Norton requires Windows 7 Service Pack  1.  Have you installed SP1?

Re: windows 7 install failure

Hi anotherws:

Is your Win 7 SP1 installation fully patched to the end of extended support (14-Jan-2020)?  If you have not installed the KB4474419 update (rel. 23-Sep-2019) that adds support for SHA-2 code signing of digital certificates to Win 7 SP1 then Norton products newer than v22.21.3  will not run correctly.  See Norton employee Gayathri_R's 16-Apr-2021 announcement SHA 2 Code Signing Support for Windows 7  for more information.

If you aren't sure if KB4474419 is installed, search your installed updates at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features | View Installed Updates.  Search for the complete string "KB4474419" (without the quote marks) and not a partial string like "4474419".  If missing, the standalone .msu installer can be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog at https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=kb4474419 Windows 7 - just download the appropriate 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) .msu file to your desktop and double-click to run.

Re: windows 7 install failure

for reasons unknown (I did not do anything) the next day it decided to run the install and completed. I have no idea, unless there is something about spectrum internet? This system has a related problem in that windows update fails with a mystery code that nobody had an answer for. The only clue is that someone says on an old windows server, it was because it was using http: instead of https: I was able to get the update with a direct request from ms website, it did install. Norton will run update requests, so I guess I will wait and see what else. thanks
