I've never noticed this file before but today it's been writing/written to quite a lot. The searches I've done online and in the forum here returned no results. I don't really think it has anything to do with a virus but I'd like to know what it is.
The filename is ncpDynam.dat. It's from Norton 360 on Windows 7.

it MAY be related to the CPU usage issue other have been posting about starting today. I also have that file on my Win10 21H1 system. I checked and when I was able to stop my CPU and cursor from cycling ... it stopped writing to that file.
Could just be a coincidence at this point though, as I'm not sure either what Norton uses that file for

I was looking in the Windows Resource Monitor and that particular file was showing up at least a dozen entries and making my hdd churn non-stop and making the system sluggish. The ncpDynam.dat file on my system comes in at about 55 Mb in size and just started doing this about 2 days ago. Whatever is going on, it makes opening up the Norton UI much longer, takes about 15 seconds initially and then slightly faster on subsequent launches. Going to do a reinstall and see if that helps.

The reinstall did nothing, after reinstalling it was good for a few hours and then the hard drive usage and CPU usage by Norton is spiking every 3 or 4 seconds. Probably will have to uninstall until they get it figured out, good thing I haven't installed my desktop's SSD yet.

Possibly (most likely) the reinstalled version of Norton was OK, and after a few hours live update pushed again whatever has been causing these recent issues. That's why I'm currently not trying a reinstall as a fix yet. Although I'm running a SSD and this drive writing is making me none too happy

It's most definitely related to the CPU issue mentioned in a number of threads. I believe it's writing to the history log. And you're right - it's putting unnecessary wear on our SSD/NVMe drives and needs to be fixed ASAP.
See if you can replicate my findings.

I saw that norton pushed a patch that supposedly fixed the cpu issue so I restarted it and it seemed fine for a few hours but now I'm seeing the same thing where my hd is slammed by norton constantly writing to ncpDynam.dat and ncpDynam.dat.log. So the high hd access issue still isn't fixed.

Yeah, I'm seeing the same. It's no longer respawning tons of processes that run for a few secs then die, but I am still seeing a write rate of around 36 MB/s to the ncpDynam.dat file. plus about 4 MB/s to the ncpDynam.dat.log file.
There are currently 4 users online.
