Norton CPU spikes every 2 seconds causes Desktop icons to flash.

Windows 10 Home fully updated.  Been running Norton for many years.  Sudden change overnight.

Desktop icons flash every 2 seconds

Task manager showed Norton's CPU usage jumped from 0% to 4 or 5% every 2 seconds which matched the icons flashing.

Open Norton to have a page of apps I have that Norton said it needed updates for (I had this function turned off) I excluded the apps and proceeded to complete the live update.  Got error message that igfxEM module needed to be closed to complete the update (never seen a screen like this before).  Stopped the module and got another error message to stop Host Processes for Windows Services, which I did.  After reboot Norton reports all up to date, BUT the problem still exists.

Tried the Diagnostic tool in Help which said it found a problem and fixed it....twice.

The problem continues and the flashing icons are driving me crazy.

I would appreciate any help.

Not fixed for me!  I've run live update and haven't received any patch ... what's going on?

Patch worked for me. Thank you Norton, I would assume that you will be speaking to those employees that blamed other software.

The recent hot fix worked for me. NortonSecurity.exe is no longer being continuously re-spawned. Thank you so much Norton techs!

So does this 'hot-fix' come down automatically via LiveUpdate?  What does the entry for it say when you click on DETAILS after the update?  I just came online now after stepping away from the PC for most of today (while monitoring the posts via my tablet).  I did a manual LiveUpdate a few moments ago but my issue is still present.   So I suspect I have to wait for the next round of updates, yes?

Employee Matt Boucher posted this information about the fix.   https://community.norton.com/en/comment/8526979#comment-8526979

It is not anything that gets updated on our computers, but some issue on Norton's back end systems.

I had to perform a reinstall (see my posts on the other thread) as the fix didn't work for me.  So far the reinstall MAY have worked, but it's only been a little over an hour.

You may want to try using the Norton RnR tool like I did

While I am no longer seeing processes respawn and terminate quickly, I am still seeing about 36 MB/s being written to the ncpDynam.dat file plus 4 MB/s to the ncpDynam.dat.log file continuously.

You may want to try running the Remove/Reinstall tool.  I had to run that for the fix to take, but so far going on 24 hrs and no issues.  I was helping a few friends and relatives as well.  Two of them also had to run the RnR tool to fix the issue, while others never had to do a reinstall.

Re: Norton CPU spikes every 2 seconds causes Desktop icons to flash.

I couldn't stand it any longer as nothing changed at all for me since the 'fix' was announced yesterday (4/16). Whatever was supposed to come down the pipe or connect in the background was not happening for me - so this afternoon I did a complete uninstall (remove all user data) from Control Panel followed by running Norton Remove and Reinstall tool followed by a total fresh reinstall of 360.  I'm now sitting at version 22.22.2.10 and no CPU spiking/process respawn & terminate quickly any longer...so pleased right now.  I know this isn't at the most recent 360 version (the one released earlier this month), but I'll leave it as is for the present.  Whenever it decides to upgrade to latest, maybe by then it will have the so-called fix/patch in place.  Also too, my Norton installation has been in place since 2013, so I figure a clean sweep wouldn't hurt as it has gone thru all these product upgrades over this time and accumulated tons of stuff.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed going forward. I'll just let this be as is and keep close tabs on it. Will post updates as warranted.  Have a good holiday.

Re: Norton CPU spikes every 2 seconds causes Desktop icons to flash.

Just curious of those here that performed a total uninstall of NORTON 360, reinstalled to version 22.22.2.10 and returned soon thereafter to most recent version 22.22.3.9 - did anyone at all ever see a re-occurrence of the CPU spike/3rd task spawning/log file writing since then in any way-shape-form? I have disabled AUTOMATIC UPDATES for the time being so I can continue working uninterrupted until I can get to a drive image backup of this configuration with v22.22.2.10 and then will resume download of updates. Since there hasn't been any recent activity on this thread, then I'm taking it that 'no news is good news'…problem has been resolved at everyone’s satisfaction?

Re: Norton CPU spikes every 2 seconds causes Desktop icons to flash.

It's been working fine here since the Norton fix on 15 April.  But my only symptoms were Ethernet activity spikes every two seconds.   Two Win 8.1-64 machines.

Good here on my end since last Friday and the Software Updater also never returned
