75MB updates everyday??

Is something wrong with my Norton Online or is there some reason that everyday there has been a 75+MB update???  I've been using the "intelligent updater" because I have a dial up service.  Having to spend 5 to 6 hours every night updating is getting to be a real drag.   I don't have that kind of time.

I've also had a problem canceling the Live Update  once it starts.  I literally have to reboot my computer to get it to stop.   It keep asking me is I'm sure I want to cancel it.  After asking 5 or 6 times I log off and reboot my computer.

Hi skooter62

If you allow liveupdate to update your Norton AV product then the resulting nightly liveupdate runs, when you do them, will be much shorter than continuing to use intelligent updater.

Re: 75MB updates everyday??

Thanks for the quick response.

I used to use the Live Update to run my updates but then they started getting to be 75MB+.  I have a dial-up connection.  One I can't tie up my phone for 6 or 7 hours, and 2 when using Live Update, I usually loose my connection and end up starting all over again.   It was recommended that I use the Intelligent Updater because I can download using a download manager.  By doing that I can disconnect and not lose anything.  I can pick up right where I left off.

Today I log on, click on my Norton AV, and because I haven't been on-line for over 10 hours, I've got another 77MB file to download.

What am I downloading???  Virus definitions are usually only about 1 MB.    It doesn't matter if I use the Live Updater, apparently the update is the same number of MB.  I can't keep doing this everyday, unless there is a reason the updates are so big.    Is it updating to 2011??

HI skooter62

You should be able to set your dial-up connection to not time out so that large downloads can complete and once you get the first big one done you should then be back to regular liveupdates of a reasonable size.

Re: 75MB updates everyday??

Hi

Again thanks for the quick response.

I have Netzero and I don't see anywhere in the settings that would allow me to do that.   When I inquired about these "server time outs" they told me they didn't have any control over it, it's done automatically and randomly.    Are they giving me a line?  I'll try the help page again and see if what you suggest is possible.

If I understand you correctly, my Live Updater is where the update has to come from to stop it from telling me I have a 75 MB file waiting?   I had the feeling I was downloading the whole thing before, but I wasn't sure.  When I checked the control panel it says the whole program is only 75MB.  I guess that what I found so frustrating.

Re: 75MB updates everyday??

There are no updates related to Norton Online Family that are that size.  The intelligent updater is used to update virus definitions for Symantec Security products, and not the Norton Safety Minder.

However, The Old Parental Control component that was associated with Norton Internet Security's Add-on Pack had a 75 mb URL list that had to be downloaded after the old parent controls were enabled.

Can you please confirm the following:

1 - The name and  version of Norton security  products that are installed on your machine?

2 - Have you downloaded and installed Norton Safety Minder?

3 - Have you downloaded and installed the Norton Internet Security Add on pack?

Re: 75MB updates everyday??

I'm running Norton AntiVirus Online, version 17.7.0.12.     I was having a problem with downloading using LiveUpdate, they (my ISP) told me to use the "intelligent updater" and gave me the link to use.  That update is always 75+MB.  I assumed that when it said Norton Online Family that was for my Norton.

I'm enclosing some screen shots.

The first is what happens when I use "Live Update".  After downloading for hours when it gets to the end it says, "Not all updates were successful".  I end up with the daily definitions, but none of the other.

The second is what I got when I just tried updating again today The 75Mb file that didn't take the other night..

The third is the Norton console.

Yes, the Norton I use is a Symantec Security product.  Their tech told me that Norton is Norton.   If it's not then why call it Norton, why not call it Symantec AntiVirus???

I dumped McAfee because it was a PITA and I'm about ready to dump Norton.  I realize it is being provided by my ISP but I still have to pay for it.

Re: 75MB updates everyday??

I see the confusion, it's because your product is called "Norton Antivirus Online"

Can I ask you where you got it?

It looks just like Norton Antivirus 2010 except for the title, the retail version we are used to does not say "Online".

Is this something provided by your ISP maybe?

Re: 75MB updates everyday??

It looks like you are using an SOS product by Symantec. Symantec provides customized versions of Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security and Norton 360 to Internet Service Providers wherin the ISPs either provide it as free service or charge the users on monthly subscription basis.  These products are similar to the retail products available in market and at online store but may differ in some features.

Please don't get confused for Norton AntiVirus Online and Norton Online Family. Both are totally different. Norton AntiVirus Online is a security product which protect you from security threats such as virus, trojans, worms etc. Whereas, Norton Online Family is a Parental Control software using which you can monitor and control the online activities of your kids.

The intelligent updater is used to update the virus definitions in Norton security products (NAV, NIS & N360) only if LiveUpdate is not working. You dont have to run it everyday. If you have problems with LiveUpdate, you can post your problem in NAV/NIS board. I am sure you will get help for Norotn Community members.

I hope this clears the confusion.

Moved to NIS/NAV Board for better exposure.
