8 Gigs of "SDSDefs"?

Hi, I see a tree like the following:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Security\NortonData\22.7.0.76\Definitions\SDSDefs with 111 folders, each of which is about 90 to 100 megs.   Altogether these are taking up 8.3 gigs of space.   I suspect that is not correct.

Windows 10, Norton Security 22.9.12.

Can someone help me clean these out?  Do I have to (sigh) uninstall and reinstall?  Any other suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Michael

My SDSDefs folder is 126mb, consisting of 72 files 18 folders.  Most of these folders have minimal content.

Re: 8 Gigs of "SDSDefs"?

Normally there will be 2 SDS Definition folders. The latest will have lots of files and the previous folder may have just 1 file. As new def arrive the oldest should be erased and the current is cleaned out except for maybe 1 file.

We had this problem before where the updates were not cleaning out the old def folders.

I think the solution was to boot in safe mode and then delete all but the last 2 Def folders.

Then the update program should keep up.

As a side note, it is normal for the IPS Def to have 2 folders that have many files and the oldest is replaced with new update. All the other def should only have 1 def folder.

Here is the link to the same problem from last Aug.

You can try turning off Tamper Protection in Norton and it may let you delete a lot of those old def files but newer ones may not and that takes going into Safe Mode.

This is the same as a post that was solved but not marked as solved seven months ago. Full discussion is there. Un-install and re-install are avoidable. https://community.norton.com/en/forums/sdsdefs-problem-norton-security J

Re: 8 Gigs of "SDSDefs"?

After the Creators Update this week I checked all my systems Norton Definition folders and had to boot into safe mode to clean them up.

IPS Def now has the last two which is normal and all the rest including SDS Def has one.

You can check the usage.dat and definfo.dat for current information. Open with Notepad.

After a few updates they are updating properly and deleting the older def folder.
