Activation of Norton Security Suite by Comcast - Windows 10

The Subscription Status shows "Activation Required" and I click on Activate Now.  It appears to connect to the server and then nothing happens.  Tried several times to activate.  Product appears to be working and there is no drop down within the help box to enter the Norton PIN.  Any help in getting the software activated would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Hello dans555

Have you checked with Comcast about this issue? If no satisfaction from them, then please stay tuned for yank. He is our Norton Security Suite expert. He should most likely be on Thanks.

Hi dans555,

Here is the Knowledge Based Article in regards to your question:

https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20091202110404EN_EndUserProfile_en_us

It sounds like you are attempting to activate properly.  It also sounds like you have used the Norton Retail products in the past and there is no drop down option in NSS to enter Product Key as there is in the retail versions. NSS uses a PIN as you are aware.

Just to verify, did you upgrade to Win 10 prior to upgrading NSS?  Please double check and be sure NSS is version 22.5.2.15 (Support/Help > About from the main page).

Re: Activation of Norton Security Suite by Comcast - Windows 10

Thanks for replying.  Floplot...I did not contact Comcast yet.  Not sure if it is a Comcast issue.  Yank...I am running 22.5.2.15, but I'll back up a bit on what happened.  I had the software on my machine prior to upgrading to Win 10 and it "disappeared".  I downloaded again and everything looked good until attempting a LiveUpdate.  That error code essentially said to remove software and start over.  I used the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall and then installed again.  LiveUpdate worked just fine and I was able to complete a full scan, just can't activate.  It was interesting that I had this problem as I upgraded my Dell Laptop to Win 10 and after about 5 minutes using WIN 10 looking around, a message popped up that there was an update for Norton and everything is working fine.

Re: Activation of Norton Security Suite by Comcast - Windows 10

Thanks for the feedback - there are numerous posts on the Comcast Forum re Activation problems.  I do not have and answer yet, but have suggested to contact Norton Support for Comcast:

https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/norton-security-suite/5.0/contact-chat?abproduct=Norton+Security+Suite&abversion=5.0&entsrc=redirect_pubweb&ispid=1122&pvid=f-nss

If your problems are not totally sorted, I'd suggest you contact them also.

Re: Activation of Norton Security Suite by Comcast - Windows 10

I had this same problem two days ago when I reinstalled the most recent version of Norton Security Suite from a Comcast download on my newly updated Windows 10 operating system after removing the previous version using the Norton Removal Tool. I called Comcast support. After asking many nonsensical, irrelevant questions, the Comcast original representative transferred me to another Comcast technical specialist who eventually connected me to a Norton support specialist at Norton Support. He worked for about one-half hour using remote access to my computer. After making many changes to my administrative computer files, he resolved the issue and my Norton Security Suite was activated. I recommend that you skip the "middle man" (i.e. Comcast) and call Norton Support directly to help you resolve the issue.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10.  My Norton Security Suite (obtained through Comcast) disappeared.  I used Defender for a few days but wanted to go back to Norton.  I downloaded the newest NSS from Comcast.  There were still problems with it . . . not activating properly was one.  I went through Chat support with Norton.  They were able to fix the problem, which entailed making several registry changes.  Now it works fine.  I asked the support tech to tell me exactly what registry keys he changed, but he was reluctant to tell me.

I also have the same problem with activating Norton in W10.  I did call Symantec tech support and they were on line with me for over 1 hour.  They even used remote desktop, but could not fixed the problem.  Ended up with the Norton tech saying it was a problem with their server being updated and said it problem would be corrected in a couple of hours.  Well that's been three days still no fix.  I think the tech was at a lost and just wanted to get me off the line.

Hello Bwalls

Are you also using Comcast Norton Security Suite? I would suggest that you contact Norton Chat again. You will probably get a different agent. If you are using NSS, then please use yank's link for chat up above. If you are not using NSS, then please use this.

.Please contact the free chat program by using this link.

Thanks

I have the same problem but I am reluctant to allow anyone (including Norton reps) remote access to my laptop. Is there anyway to resolve this issue without allowing remote access?

Re: Activation of Norton Security Suite by Comcast - Windows 10

The Norton representative followed a series of complex steps via remote access to resolve the problem. I was glad not to need to understand or to perform them independently. However, if you remain reluctant to consider remote access, when you are speaking to a representative you might inquire about available documentation concerning the steps he/she would be performing if permitted.

Re: Activation of Norton Security Suite by Comcast - Windows 10

I was fine with allowing online remote access.  You can see what they are doing on your screen as they are working on your computer.  I only wish they had given me a log of the changes they made, so it could be posted for other people having a similar problem.

Re: Activation of Norton Security Suite by Comcast - Windows 10

I waited in the Norton's Chat Queue for 2 hours on this. Chatted with Josie and she is supposed to send me an email with detailed instructions on how to fix this Comcast NSS Activation problem. I had to end the chat session in order to have the email sent but I am still waiting for it 5 minutes later. Hopefully the email will come and I can post the detailed instructions here for others. She never offered to Remote Into My Desktop and perform the fix herself. I upgraded to 10 from Windows 8.1. After changing the Group Policy Settings to disable Windows Defender and Using the Norton Removal Tool and Reinstalling NSS, everything appears to be working except the Activation Part.

Still waiting for my email. Got a feeling I may have been lied to. I am currently waiting in the chat queue again to find out where my emailed instructions are. This is a freaking joke. If they have instructions they can email, why not post them on their website somewhere. Clueless.

OK. Got it fixed. This time the tech actually remoted in and corrected the problems. From what I could tell it did not take much. From what I can remember, he went into NSS settings and Unchecked the "Norton Tamper Protection". Next he deleted a couple of files under the Norton Install Folder. The files were like 0000001 and 0000002. He then verified that I had a PIN file created called: Norton Security_PIN.txt under C:\Users\username\Documents\Symantec\. He then clicked the Activate Now Button and it worked.

Re: Activation of Norton Security Suite by Comcast - Windows 10

I decided to uninstall and reinstall one more time and that seems to have fixed the problem. At least the banner saying I need to activate is not showing up.

One thing I did differently to uninstall Norton Security Suite this time was that I did not use the Norton removal tool. I clicked on the Norton Download Manager in my downloads folder and that created my Norton Installation folder on my desktop again. Inside that folder there is an application called "Norton Security Suite Setup". I clicked on that thinking I would just try to reinstall over the top of the software I already had installed but instead it only gave me the option to uninstall. It had two choices - partial removal leaving personal settings and part of the old install on your computer or complete removal. I chose complete removal because I had no personal settings I cared about keeping and I wanted every norton file deleted. Took about 5 minutes to uninstall and then needed to do a restart. After restarting and booting back up I clicked on "Norton Security Suite Setup" again (located in the Norton Installation folder on the desktop) and this time it came up with the install screen. Took about 8-10 minutes to install and when Norton opened it shows it is activated.

Anyway, for what it is worth, this worked for me.

Glad you got it working. Maybe they updated the install file. Who knows. It's been fun.

Re: Activation of Norton Security Suite by Comcast - Windows 10

After repeated attempts to uninstall/reinstall using the Norton Removal Tool, I followed USTPC's advice and voila! it worked. Product is successfully activated. I will have to see if Defender reactivates itself again as this was the symptom that alerted me to the Norton Activation issue. Otherwise there may be another, different bug.

Re: Activation of Norton Security Suite by Comcast - Windows 10

I also followed USTPC's advice and it worked. After two weeks of contacting Norton Chat and their only solution is to uninstall and reinstall. I am still running Windows 8.1 until Intel updates a driver for Windows 10 but it appears the same issue for Windows 10/8.1. Thanks for the assistance.

Re: Activation of Norton Security Suite by Comcast - Windows 10

I've tried this twice and I still cannot activate. This morning it updated automatically but fails to manually update and afterwards I have an error message that Norton is not working, This fix has not worked for me on two laptops.

Re: Activation of Norton Security Suite by Comcast - Windows 10

I had the same problem activating the Comcast version of the Security Suite.  I uninstalled 3 times and ran the Norton removal tool.  Finally got tired of playing around with it and contacted Norton online chat support.  The agent was pleasant and took control of my system and proceeded to make Internet Explorer the default web browser.  Ran the activation again, plugged in the pin and voila, problem solved!  I could not believe the solution was that simple and had never come across it in over a month of searching for the activation solution...... grrrrrr....... Anyway, if anyone reads this, make IE your default browser, activate and then switch back to whatever you were using.....

Happy surfing.

Thanks TGP for your feedback.

Below is a recent link (although attached on an older thread) from the Comcast Security Board regarding the same use of IE for activation:

Re: Activation of Norton Security Suite by Comcast - Windows 10

I had the same problem when I change for a new machine; I contacted Norton tech support and what he did was changed the browser default to be "EXPLORER"; that change solved my problem.

I changed my computer one more time in one week for a new machine, and when I got across the same problem what I did was I uninstalled Google Chrome and I made the "EXPLORER" my default browser; I restarted the computer, and that resolved the issue and my Norton Security Suite was activated.

Note: I know how to change the browser default but the way I do it is easy; or next time when you get a new computer before you install Google Chrome, install Norton Security Suite, activate it and then install Google Chrome.

Setting Internet Explorer to be the default browser solved the activation problem for me. Thank you very much.

Re: Activation of Norton Security Suite by Comcast - Windows 10

Yes setting IE as default browser fixed the problem. Looks like no browser was set as default so symantec page was not opening. Go to default programs, set IE as default browser. Try activating and it works
