After installing 4.1

How do I get Norton to run? Shouldn't there be an icon in the menu bar? Isn't there a menu where I can turn on the various Norton programs? Is there a window that does the same?

It's been so long since I've run Norton for Mac, after it was sequestered by the Snow leopard upgrade, that I may be confusing Windows Norton 2009.

I retired as an engineer in 2001 and have no interest in the finer details of this product.

What can I run seamlessly and how do I do it?

Re: After installing 4.1

There should be an icon in the menubar, unless somebody has disabled it. If you are sure the installation went OK (did it go through the setup assistant when you restarted?) then there should be a folder in /Applications called Symantec Solutions. If that folder is there, you can try launching some of the applications and making sure they work.

With the information given I can't say what the issue might be (if any), but if you are sure the installation went OK then please open Activity Monitor, and see if any of the processes are running:

SymDameon

SymUIAgent

  NortonAutoProtect

Re: After installing 4.1

I should have said after updating Norton for Mac according to the instructions yu provided. I did not re-install Norton for Mac which was originally installed back in January and then turned off after the OS update to Snow Leopard. The icon disappeared after the Update to Snow Leopard. Since then, I updated the OS to 10.6.2. Also since then, Norton has run at least one, and probably more updates. I finally did the large Norton update from the Symantec site as you recommended a few days ago.

There is still no menubar icon.  The only process is SYMUIAgent in the ones you mention. I don't know if one called SymSecondaryLaunch which is also running is a Symantec product. SymDameon and NortonAutoProtect are not running.

Doing installations of other software does invoke what appears to be a Norton test of every file being installed, which I normally cancel.

Re: After installing 4.1

I started up Norton Antivirus.app and now a process called Norton Antivirus is running, your shield is in the dock and clicking it brings up the Antivirus window. The close and zoom buttons in this window are grayed out. This window states that Automatic Protection and Vulnerability Protection are On. My recollection is that clicking the now missing menubar icon used to show Antivirus On without  any shield icon or accompanying window in the dock, but I could be wrong.

Re: After installing 4.1

It's close to two months since my last email and the icon in the menu bar is still missing, Login Items still show SymUIAgent and the processes still include SymUIAgent.app and Norton Antivirus.

I resubscribed and would like to have this whole application working as it did, hoever, I did start the Antivirus, if it wasn't already running.

I'll restart the Mac and see if this stuff runs automatically.

The only screen of death I've ever had in this iMac (which I bought a year ago) was apparently from the Norton Firewall after the Snow Leopard upgrade. I've been afraid to turn it on since and would like to have some explicit instructions on how to restore the various functions of all of this software.

Anyway, let me see whether SymUIAgent and Norton Antivirus start up automatically after a restart.

Re: After installing 4.1

SymSecondary Launch and SymUIAgent are the two (presumably Symantec) processes that run after a computer restart.  I have no idea how to get any of the actual functioning parts of your software automatically running after a power down and restart.

If I manually start the Antivirus Application, it then appears in the process list.

I just paid for a subscription renewal, but not the program suite. Would I be better off uninstalling the application and re-installing? If so, how do I do all that?

Re: After installing 4.1

Since it's been a while since this thread was started, I'm afraid I've forgotten the details of what was tried and wasn't tried. Please follow the instructions here:

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080427024142EN&ln=en_US

This will remove all the Norton applications from your computer. Scroll down to the section "Download and run RemoveSymantecMacFiles". Then re-install the Norton software from your installation disk. Be sure to run LiveUpdate during the installation process when you are prompted.

This will ensure that you have all the latest Norton software installed on your Snow Leopard machine. This should also re-install the mechanisms we use to get launched after a reboot.

Let me know if that works.

Re: After installing 4.1

Prior to removing the product, I'd like to know where the extended download service for Norton Internet Security 4.0 is located. I've found it for every PC program but not for the Mac.

The extended download service I bought ends January 23. I did buy a subscription extension for another year but I'm clueless on where to download.

Thank you for your previous answers.

Re: After installing 4.1

Thinking more about it, even after I remove and then re-download the product, I'll have to also extend its subscription, which I recently bought. Do I first put in the  original product key and then, somehow, the  Renewal code?
