Another Norton Ghost Problem -- CRC Check -- Invalid -- Please Help!

I tried a number of times to ghost my C:\ drive using Ghost 12 -- with validation -- and I kept getting the same error message:

" Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: Complete System Backup. Info 60BB0154: Snapshot failed because of VSS failure. Error EBAB03F1: Catastrophic failure. Error ED800012: The internal structure of the image file (CRC Check) is invalid, damaged or unsupported.

Details: 0xEBAB0005"

I realize that I can complete the ghosting operation simply by unchecking "validate" -- but then I wouldn't be able to trust the resulting image(s).  I have performed chkdsk on both the source drive (C) and target drive (D) and they both checked out AOK.

Symantec -- please help!  Thanks in advance.

Just want to add that my target drive is an external drive connected by USB.
