Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

When I disable auto protect in Norton Antivirus it does not stay off, it comes right back on. I am trying to download a file that I know is safe but NAV won't let me.

Try restarting your machine, then disable Auto-Protect.

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

Hello

Please try submitting the file to Norton and have it checked to see if it is a false positive.

To report a false positive, please use this link

Thanks.

I did try restarting, it didn't help.

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

Are you sure it is the Auto Protect feature and not Download Intelligence that is causing the issue with your download?

Can you post the screenshot of the message you see while the download is blocked? Instructions to post screenshots can be found here

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

It does sound like a Download Intelligence thing, but Download Intelligence should be disabled as well when Auto-Protect is turned off.  What is the duration you are selecting for Auto-Protect to be off?

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

I have tried 15 minutes and 1 hour.

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

No, I am not sure it's Auto-Protect. What is the download intelligence? and how would I turn it off.  This problem is something new. I have never had this happen before.

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

Hi, Tom. Here is some info on Download Intelligence feature.

The Norton product provides the Download Intelligence option to let you configure the Download Insight feature. Download Insight provides information about the reputation of any executable file that you download from supported applications. The reputation details indicate whether the downloaded file is safe to install. You can use these details to decide the action that you want to take on the file.

In Norton Security, it's found in Settings/Firewall/Intrusion and Browser Protection.

Click on the ? icon to the right, for more detail. It can be disabled for as long as you need to download a file you know is safe.

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

OK, checked it out. I can turn off Download Intelligence if I do it before I turn off

Auto Protect. So then I turn off Auto Protect.  If I then apply and go out then back in again, Download Intelligence is still off but Auto Protect is back on.  No matter what I do I can't get Auto Protect to stay off for any length of time.

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

Hi, Tom. Ok, try going to the drop down for Turning Auto Protect off, and select either Until System Restart, or Permanently.

Then try the download, but don't forget to re-enable Auto Protect.

Or you could try Settings/Antivirus/Scans and Risks and Exclusions, and try adding the file to exclude it.

Are you using a Windows Administrator account?

Yes, I am the administrator

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

Maybe I just need to clean this Norton off and re-install

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

What happens if you select "Permanently?"  What happens if you turn it off by right clicking the notification area icon and using the menu there?

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

Have you tried downloading the file with Download Intelligence turned off?

What message are you seeing when NAV blocks the download? Can you post a screenshot of the message?

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

I tried everything. I gave up and used NRnR to uninstall and reinstall.  The thing is working correctly now.  Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions.

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

What version of NAV are you using?

And we have not asked about your OS.

If you use Windows 8/8.1 or 10, there can be an issue with the Fast Start feature.. See more information here.

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

I started having this problem when I recently updated to the "latest Version".  New version check says I am running the latest version.  Don't see the number anywhere though.  My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.  I believe this problem may be due to the update, but why is it just effecting me?

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

Have you tried using the system tray icon, as I suggested earlier?

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

I haven't been able to find the "Permanently" option. It seems like I have seen it before but now I can't find it. Can you point the way?

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

Now I remember. I never look below 1 hour so I just wasn't seeing it. I did try turning it off permanently, it didn't do any different. Still comes right back on. or never turns off.

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

And you are clicking both "Apply" and "OK." I assume, when both options are present?  How are you discovering that Auto-Protect has become re-enabled - is the red X on the system tray icon turning into a green checkmark, or are you seeing it somewhere else?

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

Hi, Tom. It may be that Norton is resisting attempts to disable it, so why not exclude the file in question from being scanned ?

Settings/Antivirus/Scans and Risks/Exclusions/Low Risks, and see if that fixes your issue.

As a last resort, as during the update your install may have become corrupted, you may wish to try the Norton Removal Tool, which is more thorough and will give you a clean copy when you reinstall, which you can do from your Norton Account.

That will give you a preactivated copy, so just run Live Update after the download until no more are found, and then reboot.

Yeah, this is sooo unusual (I have never heard anything like it ever reported here before) I just want to cover all the obvious simple things to make sure we aren't overlooking something.  Its one of those things that you say to yourself, "if only I could sit in front of that PC for a few minutes and see what it is doing for myself..."

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

The only time I couldn't disable Auto-Protect was when I had a detection [false positive] and Norton wanted my machine to restart.

Worth unchecking Tamper Protection for the duration of the download ?

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

Definitely clicking OK or Apply.  Actually I don't think it ever goes off. The red X never appears and I don't get the message saying I am unprotected.  It doesn't matter if I am trying to download anything or not.  If I just decide to disable it, I get the choices of 15 minutes, one hour, etc. After I choose one and click close then open it back up it is re enabled. The green check mark on the icon in the system tray never turns to a red x.

Yeah, this is sooo unusual (I have never heard anything like it ever reported here before).

This sounds similar to the problem discussed in JustRight's thread NIS v22.5.2.15 cannot disable autoprotect.  However, that particular Auto-Protect problem was patched in v22.5.5.15 - see the list of bug fixes in the Norton 22.5.5 Product Update announcement.  I just checked at www.norton.com/latestnav and noted that the English language (EN-US) offline installer is currently NAV-ESD-Def-22.5.5.15-EN.exe , so I would assume that the Norton Remove and Reinstall (NRnR) tool that Tom Perkins ran already installed this latest version of NAV.

Tom Perkins:

I started having this problem when I recently updated to the "latest Version".  New version check says I am running the latest version.  Don't see the number anywhere though.

Hi Tom Perkins:

You can find your current version number in your main Norton window at Help | About (or Support | About for users with an older v21.x product).  Note that Help | New Version Check will only tell you if a major upgrade (e.g., from v21.x to v22.x) is available.  Minor product updates (e.g., v22.5.4.24 to v22.5.5.15) are delivered via LiveUpdates.

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

I checked and my current version is v22.5.5.15. I don't have that grayed out issue.

I also just ran the auto fix under the support. It said it could not find anything wrong with my installation.

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

Check Norton History and select to show "Unresolved Security Risks."  See if there are any entries there.  I'm wondering if Krusty13 might be on to something - maybe Norton thinks there is still something on your machine that needs to be dealt with.

Do you now or have you ever had another security program on your computer? If so, you will have to remove it with the removal tool for that program.

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

I checked the history and there are no unresolved security risks.  I did have Malwarebytes but I deleted it then did a registry clean and the problem still persists.

Re: Antivirus auto protect won't stay off

The mystery continues to grow.  So, if I do an uninstall and reinstall everything with NAV is fine then.  But if my computer goes to sleep the only way I can wake it up is to manually shut it down and restart it.  Then the Norton AV is back to not being able to disable auto protect.  Somehow this problem I am having with NAV is related to the deep sleep problem which causes me to shut down and reboot then the NAV problem is back. ??
