App Lock displays Activate Accessibility on phone unlock

I have a Moto X4 and the Norton App Lock version 1.3.0.329. Although the Accessibility config is already on, it keeps showing the Activate Accessibility screen right after I unlock my cellphone. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, restarting the phone, clearing the cache, but it didn't work. It was working fine until 2 days ago. The phone is not rooted, and I didn't change or install anything that I remember. Any ideas?

Re: App Lock displays Activate Accessibility on phone unlock

Did you try turning off the Accessibility setting for App Lock, restart the device, then reset the Accessibility setting?

You cleared the app cache. Did you also try clearing the app data?

Re: App Lock displays Activate Accessibility on phone unlock

Hello,

I've just tried to turn the accessibility off, restart, and turn it on again and it didn't work. Also, the button to clear the app data is disabled.

One more thing I just noticed, the Configuration "app" appeared set to be locked in the App Lock although I didn't set it like that. I have unmarked it and it stayed unmarked for a while and then it appeared to be locked again.

Re: App Lock displays Activate Accessibility on phone unlock

What Configuration app are you referring to?

What Android version is on your device?

The app data button disabled is because you have the Device Administrator setting turned on for App Lock. Tap the three bars at top left of App Lock app and then tap Deactivate Device Administrator to turn this off. Then clear the app Data, uninstall the App Lock app and restart the device. In that order.

Then reinstall the app from Google Play. Set things up to protect what you want and test.

> What Configuration app are you referring to?

Sorry. It is the system "Settings" app (my Android is in Portuguese - I've translated incorrectly).

> What Android version is on your device?

It is version 8.

> The app data button disabled is because you have the Device Administrator setting turned on for App Lock.

Aah, ok. So I followed your instructions. I noticed that the Settings app was again set to be locked, besides the Norton App Lock itself. I tested it before and after activating the device administrator setting. However, it still shows the Activate Accessibility screen when I unlock the cellphone.

Also, I set the application to skip battery optimization as I've read on another thread in this forum, but it didn't change the result.

Re: App Lock displays Activate Accessibility on phone unlock

Thanks for the clarification on the Settings app being locked. I'll check with my contacts to see if this may be the new default setting. I think it should be the default, because if the wrong person gets your device, they can access the Android settings and would be able to uninstall the App Lock app. This bypasses the security you had set up.

I'll also check to see if there is something that might be device specific, or Android 8 specific causing your Accessibility message.

A few more questions to try to diagnose this issue.

  • Does the App Lock app work correctly after you have unlocked the phone? ie Does it protect the apps you have setup in App Lock?
  • Has  your phone recently received an OS update around the time this issue started?
  • How long after you reinstalled the App Lock app do you see the issue with the Accessibility Service? And when you get the message, is the service running when you check?
  • Do you have any security app that might have been updated around the time this issue started?

Yes. It works ok.

when you get the message, is the service running when you check?

Yes. The accessibility is on for the Norton App Lock.

Has  your phone recently received an OS update around the time this issue started?

Not exactly an OS update. There is an app called Moto Display. It comes with the device and provides a kind of "always on" display, showing a clock and notifications with the device locked. It was updated 3 days ago. So I disabled it and the problem is gone.

So, I believe that there's some kind of incompatibility between the last version of Moto Display and the Norton App Lock. I use the brazilian portuguese version called Moto Tela. Which is a bummer. Is there a way to file a bug for that?

Thanks.

Re: App Lock displays Activate Accessibility on phone unlock

Good find for the Moto Display seeming to cause the issue. I'll pass this along to my contacts. There was mention of other Moto users having issues recently. Maybe they are also caused by this display feature.

You might also try to post this issue in the support section for your device's manufacturer. If the feature is causing other issues, it may mean the feature needs to be fixed.

Re: App Lock displays Activate Accessibility on phone unlock

I was experiencing nearly the exact same issues on my MotoX4. Norton App Lock would open randomly when unlocking my phone, or even when I hit the home button when in a different app. I've disabled the Moto Display feature on my phone, and I haven't seen the issue since. Thanks a lot!

For what it's worth, the issue started happening a lot recently. I assumed it was an update to the AppLock, but maybe it was a MotoDisplay update that caused it.

An update to the App Lock app is available, that says it addresses this Accessibility Service issue. Please update and test.

Re: App Lock displays Activate Accessibility on phone unlock

I'll grab the update and see what happens. While disabling the Moto Display stopped this most of the time, I'm still occasionally blocked when I hit the "home" button on my phone to get out of an app.

Re: App Lock displays Activate Accessibility on phone unlock

I still get the app-lock screen when unlocking my phone and when pressing the "home" button to leave an app. Additionally, my "Settings" app has suddenly become blocked by Norton, even though I never configured it to do so.

The Android Settings app being locked is the new default for App Lock. The reasoning is that if a user can access the system Settings, they could uninstall App Lock and bypass all the protection you have set up. You can always remove that lock if you disagree with Norton's feeling about this setting.

Have you tried disabling the Moto Display feature on your device as suggested by rtomita above?

I have notified my Norton contacts about this thread. But it seems to be some device specific issues being seen by Moto devices owners. Check the Moto manufacturer's support sites to see other apps having difficulty since the recent updates to the Moto devices.

Re: App Lock displays Activate Accessibility on phone unlock

I've updated the app but it didn't solve the problem for me. Also, after I disabled the Moto Display, the Settings app is no longer locked nor is being marked to lock "automatically" as it did before. So I think that also is related to the issue.

Sorry if I mislead you. The accessibility fix was apparently for some other devices that were having trouble. The issues with the Moto devices is new and being looked at now. I'll let the forums know when I hear any news on this.

The Settings app not being set automatically should not be a problem, as long as you can manually lock it.

Have the same problem with Motorola G6 Plus (Android 8.0.0) and Norton App Lock 1.3.0.332. Hope a fix is on its way.

Re: App Lock displays Activate Accessibility on phone unlock

Removing Moto Display and replacing it with the original version and keeping it disabled fixed this problem for me on Android Moto Z Force....... The problem began with the latest System Update to Oreo 8......... I don't know what the downside is to disabling Moto Display...... Thank you, very much for finding this workaround!!!!!!! I hope this will be fixed soon!!!!! Seems like a Moto Display upgrade bug with version 8, to me......

Re: App Lock displays Activate Accessibility on phone unlock

Is there any news on a fix. I've had this issue ever since updating my Moto Z Play to Oreo 8.0. It's quite annoying as Norton Applock is now very frustrating unless I disable Moto Display which then means I don't have any screen notifications or time when the screen is off. Thanks.

I also have the same issue with Norton App lock on my Nokia 8 running Android 8.1.0. Hope someone can help?

I have not heard any updates on the Moto specific issue. As noted above, you should be contacting Moto support, as it is their updates that started causing this issue with Norton, and apparently other apps.

I have not heard specifically about Nokia issues. Have you updated your App Lock to the latest version, 1.3.0.332? There were some fixes for other devices that were having issues with the Accessibility Service.

I started using another app lock software today, keeping the Moto Display and had no issues at all. This ship has sailed.

Re: App Lock displays Activate Accessibility on phone unlock

I currently have a work around for Norton App Lock, I uninstalled Moto Display and it rolls back to version 06.038.1 and the problem goes away just don't let Play Store auto update it again. Lenovo have posted in a thread saying they will look into it. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Moto-X4/Last-Moto-Display-update-broke-Nort...

Re: App Lock displays Activate Accessibility on phone unlock

Hi all.  I installed Moto Display again to generate a bug report for Lenovo and noticed that the problem has gone.  I've checked and Moto Display is now on version 06.061.5, the affected version seemed to be 06.061.2 so the new update appears to have fixed the issue.

If it starts again I'll file a bug report.

Thanks.

I've updated Moto Display to the latest version (06.061.5 - it took a few days to be rolled out to Brazil) and tested it. The issue is gone. Thank you all for the help.
