APP says password weak-APP set pwd page says password strong

With the Android Core app: the home page says my router password is weak. However, when I change the password and the "change password page" says the password is "strong", the "home" page still says weak. Even after I reboot the Core router. What gives? Are you folks working on this?

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

My take away from the thread peterweb posted is that special characters are a cause and its the app faulting to it? Curious!!

Re: APP says password weak-APP set pwd page says password strong

I sure wish they would fix this and other irritating issues. It has been a month. When will they get some of these things fixed? Of course I am beyond my 30 day return time, so I am stuck waiting and depending on them to fix these things.

Re: APP says password weak-APP set pwd page says password strong

The question remains. Is it possible at this time to set a password that will change the security score to 500? anyone?

Re: APP says password weak-APP set pwd page says password strong

TheBearToo Because there are too many variables each user can use to setup their Core I CANNOT definitely say it is or isn't possible to get a score of 500. I found this article which explains how to increase your password score. Maybe getting it to within the 350-450 range to satisfy setup then checking other suggestions outlined in this article will help.

Re: APP says password weak-APP set pwd page says password strong

That is what I did. In menu/security the only thing that was indicated as a security issue is the password. What I am asking is "has anyone successfully gotten a password picked that Norton Core says is OK"?

Re: APP says password weak-APP set pwd page says password strong

I have a password that is accepted by the Core.  I don't have a perfect score because of my wife's work laptop that I can't install Norton Security on.

Re: APP says password weak-APP set pwd page says password strong

Great news MannyT. As one of the article posted earlier suggests other devices and their setups can contribute to the degredation of passwords for the Core. The special character issue seems to be part of it as well. Thanks for validating.

Cheers

Re: APP says password weak-APP set pwd page says password strong

How do you know it is your wife's laptop?

Re: APP says password weak-APP set pwd page says password strong

Because it wants me to install Norton Security on it and I had a perfect score before she brought it home and put it on our network.  I also don't get any error about weak passwords.

Re: APP says password weak-APP set pwd page says password strong

So, If you go to the Home/Security page in the Norton Core App, do you see a Red number (it is a 1 on mine) at the bottom of the screen (settings)? If you have a red number and you scroll down, does it say you need to install Norton Security on your wife's laptop? And, does it give you the option to click that says "I already have norton security installed on this device"?

What is the number of your score?

Re: APP says password weak-APP set pwd page says password strong

Yes, it gives me the option to install Norton Security and to say I have Norton installed.  I can't install Norton Security because it is my wife's computer from work and I don't have permission to install the software and I didn't have the need to say "I Have Norton Security installed" so that my se score would be perfect.  I could I guess if I wanted.

Re: APP says password weak-APP set pwd page says password strong

Just a heads up!! The Core App version 1.17.1 is on the Google Play Store if you all want to update and see whether that corrects things in any way.

Re: APP says password weak-APP set pwd page says password strong

@TheBearToo  I have a good answer for your password score which may be of use for you if you have UPnP enabled.

Why does enabling UPnP negatively affect my security score?

  • Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) protocol lets devices on the network automatically set up port forwarding rules for the connections that they need. It allows UPnP-compatible devices to communicate directly with other UPnP devices on the network. With UPnP enabled, routers respond to UPnP requests from the Internet, allowing attackers on the Internet to remotely configure your router.

To avoid UPnP-based problems and secure your router, UPnP is disabled on Norton Core by default. If you enable UPnP on Norton Core, it negatively affects your security score because you are open to greater risk.

If you use any programs or the services that need ports forwarded - such as a game server, or communications program - you can forward specific ports manually without relying on UPnP.

Using specific port forwarding doesn't help vs. UPnP with respect to the security score since setting up a specific port forwarding rules will also negatively impact the score.

I had  set up a port forward rule to my printer to get it to have a static IP address since that's currently the only way to get a static address.  Doing so dropped my security score by almost 30 points.

Re: APP says password weak-APP set pwd page says password strong

Given there are so many variables in that score it appears a perfect score isn't possible. As I had suggested earlier getting your score in the best range possible to get things setup is your best option.

SoulAsylum:
  • Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) protocol lets devices on the network automatically set up port forwarding rules for the connections that they need. It allows UPnP-compatible devices to communicate [receive unsolicited incoming connections from the internet]. With UPnP enabled, routers respond to UPnP requests from the Internet, allowing attackers on the Internet to remotely configure your router.

Just to be clear here, properly functioning UPnP does NOT allow anyone on the WAN side to configure the router. UPnP allows devices on the LAN side of the router to set up temporary port forwards (allowing incoming connections).

What I crossed out in the quote was an example of a malfunction router allowing UPnP configuration to occur from the WAN side, which is abnormal (a bug in some router brands/models). Even with UPnP enabled on the Norton "core" router WAN side UPnP configuration (such as from an attacker) should not be possible.

Re: APP says password weak-APP set pwd page says password strong

Hi,

The latest version of Norton Core app v.1.26 now supports passphrase. We have downgraded the old thinking of strong password (A_Z, a-z, 0-9, %@#^). Please let us know your feedback. Thank you.
