AppIdentityCA has stopped working

I started seeing this error message in a pop-up window a few days ago, after I start Windows. This is happening on both my Windows 7 & Windows 8 computers. Does anyone know what it means (besides the obvious, that is)? Is it something I should be concerned about? What is AppIdentityCA anyway?

"AppIdentityCA has stopped working"

Thanks.

Same recent popup on my 32-bit Win7 PC. OUgrad

EDIT: I just found the file in C:\Program Files\Norton Security\Engine\22.22.1.58 Digital Signature is Norton LifeLock dated 2/1/22. I just got the new 360 Engine Update which may be the problem. Must be a Norton BUG. OUgrad

Not sure, but may have seen this BUG before the Engine Update a few days ago.

Definitely had the error an hour ago after Engine Update and restart.

Re: AppIdentityCA has stopped working

You may be correct. Apparently my Norton had just updated automatically just before the error appeared. Let's see if Norton pushes a patch, or if they are no longer supporting Win 7.

Re: AppIdentityCA has stopped working

According to their web site, they still support Windows 7:

"Microsoft Windows 7 (all versions) with Service Pack 1 (SP 1) or later with SHA2 support"

If they don't, I think I'll just cancel my subscription. For anti-virus protection (that's all I'm using it for), Windows 8 and above provide sufficient protection, I believe. I only need it for my Windows 7 machine, since Microsoft doesn't support Windows 7 any more.

with SHA2 support

This may be important point here. See this Norton Announcement.    https://community.norton.com/en/blogs/product-service-announcements/sha-...

I followed the link and it comes up as a possible security risk. I can't tell if it's a Norton warning or not. Says insecure connection.

SHA 2 Code Signing Support for Windows 7

Author: Gayathri_R30 ADMIN Posted: 16-Apr-2021 | 8:53AM · Edited: 21-Apr-2021 | 1:06PM · 0 Comments

Microsoft rolled out a security patch (KB4474419 - SHA-2 code signing support update(link is external)) for Windows 7 to support signed binaries with SHA 2 certificates. Because software publishing certificates was deprecated on 15th April 2021, Norton will switch code signing to SHA 2 certificates. Product updates above 22.21.3 will not be applied on noncompliant computers. However, security updates will still be applied.

What action is required for Norton users running Windows 7?

Norton recommends that users install KB4474419 - SHA-2 code signing support update(link is external) on their PC to continue receiving Norton product updates. Any product updates above 22.21.3 will not be sent if the security patch in not installed. However, security updates will still be applied.

What does this mean for Norton users running Windows 8 or above?

No action is required for users with Windows 8 or above as SHA 2 code signing support is already available.

Note: If you’re running Windows 7, install KB4474419 - SHA-2 code signing support update(link is external) on your PC to continue receiving product updates and fixes. Security updates will still be applied.

Re: AppIdentityCA has stopped working

This is all very interesting, but I don't see what it has to do with my problem, which happens intermittently. Some days I get the error, some days I don't. And when I do get the error, I'm not trying to download anything, so what does SHA-2 have to do it?

And once again, what is AppIdentityCA anyway? Is it a secret?

Oh, and by the way, I checked. That patch is already installed on my Windows 7 computer.

Re: AppIdentityCA has stopped working

Just try installing it. If it's already installed, Windows will tell you it's already installed.

If you're still having a problem, maybe you could start your own thread instead of posting on mine. You might get better response with a relevant topic heading, as it doesn't seem to have anything to do with my original post (or, AFAIK, anything to do with any Norton product).

Thanks.

Same thing here, it just happened today after applying a patch by Norton, I just waited for Windows to stop "trying" to solve the problem but at the end I just closed that window as Windows wasn't able to solve it. I am using Windows 8 by the way.

Re: AppIdentityCA has stopped working

The same popup appeared on the desktop when I first started my Windows 7 SP1 64-bit machine at about noon today.  I just closed the popup and rebooted, and -- at least thus far --  it hasn't returned.  I am also on 22.22.1.58 (Norton Security in my case), which was apparently auto-installed early yesterday.  I do have KB4474419 installed.

I should've done a screenshot, but didn't think of that until a moment after I clicked Restart.  But here's the entry from Windows Event Viewer:

Event 1000, Application Error.

I agree that it would be nice to know the function of AppIdentityCA.exe.

Re: AppIdentityCA has stopped working

Open your system event viewer and look for entries related to this service. The service loads at boot, its function is to enforce app-locker which checks the identity of programs loading with Windows. Improper or outdated system certificates as previously posted CAN be the issue. Event viewer will give you a more detailed listing of what the cause is.

No, my post is related to a Norton executable, 'AppIdentityCA.exe', not a Microsoft library, 'appidsvc.dll'. If I had a question about a Microsoft product, I would have posted it on a Microsoft forum.

Re: AppIdentityCA has stopped working

@dfkettle I'm not attempting to be argumentative in the thread. The product, has an issue loading one of its services, just trying to get you to understand that AppIdentityCA.exe is related to the " windows service" AppIDSvc Windows uses to start with Windows using localhost . Its used to enforce "Applocker" which checks the validity of ALL programs that load with Windows start-up. Your "product' that has the issue is Windows. I apologize for attempting to help all the same. Good luck with your resolution.

Re: AppIdentityCA has stopped working

Would the fact that there was a Norton logo on the "AppIdentityCA has stopped working" popup suggest it was a Norton error?  Or could that also happen in a notification for a Norton component crash caused by a Windows error/setting?  BTW, I haven't seen the error recur since that one occurrence at bootup yesterday.

Re: AppIdentityCA has stopped working

[Removed] The error message was issued by a Norton product, that's all I need to know. If they want to blame it on Microsoft, that's their problem. It's their responsibility to fix it. If they don't, then I won't renew my subscription. [Removed]

I have not had the problem again. Although I don't know if there has been another product update since the last error. I could not find anything in the history showing when the past product update was. Hopefully it was a glitch in the one update.

I haven't seen the error lately either. But I don't think I'll be renewing my subscription.

Re: AppIdentityCA has stopped working

I reported this to Norton using chat which then led to a 2 hour remote support session.  I was not impressed with their struggle to remove and reinstall Norton.  At the end of the session AppIdentityCA stopped working again and the remote operator closed the pop-up without comment.  I won't be letting Norton control my computer again.

I have attached the WER file (changed to ANSI .txt) for the most recent case of AppIdentityCA stopping working.

I've checked Windows Update and it says KB4474419 was installed in 2019.

There could be reasons for the agent not commenting on the pop up. First, they are just making observations at that point of the diagnosis, so there is nothing to pass on to you at that time. Second, if they are gathering logs, there is no need for any comment, as the data will be examined by the engineers after it has been gathered.

Re: AppIdentityCA has stopped working

Well, just got this notice myself.  I'm on a Windows 8 computer, also with Norton.  What do I do?  How do I fix it?  Do I just close the notice?  Or do I click Close program and let Windows notify me if a solution is available?  Or is there some pro-active step I need to take?

This must be a very new problem.  This is the only entry I found when I did a google search.

I also clicked the norton autofix and the result was

Well, I googled and found the Autofix and ran it.  It said it successfully executed one fix but I would have to Restart to complete the fix.  No time now, so I'll guess I'll do it tonight when I turn off the computer.

Thanks for the info!!!

Re: AppIdentityCA has stopped working

I just ran the autofix. Said no problems found. Maybe Norton ran a patch in the background. Of course, they won't tell you that.

Re: AppIdentityCA has stopped working

One more report from me, ( this is an opinion from me only). I think that my norton 360 was not running anymore, that's probably why the task bar icon had the exclamation point. When I clicked the big norton desktop icon, it started the norton program, and the task bar icon became normal.

It was a lot concerning for me, to think that norton was off (while I was out of the house for three hours). That meant that the vpn was also off.

By the way, an orange bar on my start menu seems to be asking me to do a live update. I haven't clicked that yet ....

Re: AppIdentityCA has stopped working

On initial startup today I noticed that the Norton tray icon wasn't showing for me, either.  Task Manager confirmed that Norton was not running.  While I had the AppIdentityCA issue just once -- 5 days ago, after which is seemed to self-resolve -- I'm not so sure that was the cause of Norton failing to start today.  In fact, for me Norton fails to self-start periodically, on average once a month or so.  Sometimes just logging off and logging back on turns it on.  Other times it takes a full reboot.  And still other times, like today, even a reboot won't start it, and I have to double-click the desktop icon as you did.  (Sometimes it turns out that the icon just got hidden.  In those cases, of course, Task Manager of course shows that show Norton is running).

I always take a look to ensure that the Norton icon is in the tray, and with a green check mark, but I'm sure there are a lot of people who don't -- nor should they have to!

Re: AppIdentityCA has stopped working

I'm also seeing this problem as of today, and it is after getting the update to Norton 22.22.1.58.  Timetable of events as follows:

1.   Live Update installed the ENGINE,NGC,INSTALLDIR update at 12:02 yesterday (16th).

2.   After overnight shutdown I booted the PC at 10:48 today (17th) but did not log in immediately.

3.   Live Update installed 2 NGC Product Updates (8.55MB and 157.37MB respectively) at 11:11.

4.   I logged in to Windows at 11:36 and got the "AppIdentityCA has stopped working" pop-up.

(All times UK time.)

I'm running Windows 7 Pro SP1 (64-bit)and I do have the KB4474419 update installed.  (Installed in August 2019)
